Cuomo - schools are closed. Period.
So he didn’t technically “announce” this. A reporter asked Cuomo what additional measure would be taken when schools are reopened, for instance smaller class sizes. His response was schools are closed. Period. There is no plan to reopen schools. If and when schools reopen there will have to be a plan on sanitizing etc which will be a massive undertaking and we are not there yet.
I know this is all new and confusing and not much is known about the virus still but I wish he could just say closed until September so we could all breathe a little and maybe plan a little. I am paying daycare $25 a week to hold our spot right now. He also said schools will lose 20% of funding if the feds don’t help.

Wait. What does he mean no plan to reopen schools? Like ever? What? IF and when? Meaning they may NEVER open? That is a ridiculous statement

It was in response to a report that a few of the upstate school districts were planning on reopening soon.

I think he means for now because they haven't announced a plan to reopen.

I don’t think he meant they never will. He went on to say that if any schools are saying they are going to reopen they will not be. (Right now) But it certainly seem like he implied they are not reopening this school year.

He doesn't like when anyone crosses him. It annoyed him when DeBlasio said schools were closed for the year. Now it's annoying him when districts are saying they want to reopen.

Pretty sure he meant before 5/15 but I also doubt they will reopen this year.

I wish that he would just close them for the year at this point too, as horrible as that is. The living in limbo is what's killing me thou. I am a planner and I would like to just know that they are going to be closed, have a good cry, and then get on with it. I still can not believe this is all happening.

I agree. I also think that the some of the schools on the Island haven't come up with more concrete distance learning plans because they aren't sure if this is only temporary. If he just says that schools are done for the year, then maybe some districts would be able to plan ahead.

This whole time I feel like they keep dangling a fuking carrot in front of us and pushing that carrot out by 2 week increments. It's maddening.

I feel like this is being done deliberately so that more people don't start protesting or just disobeying the stay at home orders. I think everyone is pretty close to their breaking point. I'm on the verge of looking for states that might reopen school soon and moving there.

I just said to my husband it might be a good time to get out of NY. I can’t imagine taxes going any higher and our school district is in dire straights financially. Cuomo said that schools, hospitals, and local governments will lose 20% funding if no help from the feds. I think many people will leave...

It very much reminds me of when I was put on bed rest at 25 weeks. First they told me 2 weeks. Then each week, they said 1 more week. When I was finally released at 36 weeks, they said the couldn't tell me that at 25 weeks because I never would have complied. It's like the same thing now but probably a lot longer.

Yep. I already see people slowly disobeying. I don't mean the protests in the streets or large gatherings but I see people relaxing their personal social distancing rules and maybe having someone come over, etc. Saying things like- well I've been 100% home for 14 days and so and so has done the same- neither of us is sick- so we can get together. Stuff like that. I know what you mean about moving... i mean it's not logistically possible for us but I have been fantasizing about the exact thing. lol

Cuomo - schools are closed. Period.
I understand the need for planning ahead, but for me personally, I am okay with two weeks at a time. I feel like I can handle it a little better this way. Like let's just take it as it comes. But when DiBlasio announced he was closing schools for the year I was so upset. Because I knew we were next. And my heart was broken for my son who has an INCREDIBLE teacher, and for myself because I love my job and my students. I know it's coming. I'm not delusional. But optimism is the only thing keeping me going.
As for the 20% funding from the feds for education, start calling your representatives. Peter King, Lee Zeldin, my union suggested Phil Boyle because of where I live, everyone you can think of. Make phone calls, write letters and emails. Put the pressure on. That's my plan.

I just said the same thing to my boss. If they just cane out and said that they are closed for the year or the economy isnt goingnto start reopening until June or July then people will start to protest.

Re: Cuomo - schools are closed. Period.
He makes decisions based on the last numbers and data, that's why I feel when De Blasio did his announcement, Cuomo said no one knew what was going to happen on May or June. I got with what he said today is that schools, as of now, are closed, so there is no need to try to predict what will happen.

I am seeing this as well, I live in a tourist-adjacent community and I dont think they ever took social distancing really seriously. But now people aren't feeling quite so judged because they're seeing everyone else do it so they feel justified i guess.

Re: Cuomo - schools are closed. Period.
Most schools in states way less hit than us, cancelled for the rest of the year. we are the worst state... of course the kids arent going back to school this year. i had hopes for a week in june to wrap things up at least but i dont really think it will happen. I think we will be lucky if they go back in September. but by then the second wave will be coming im sure....

Exactly. In response to a question he said there is no plan to open schools. I took it to mean there is no PLAN in place, yet, to open schools. There will be, but no plan has been announced

We are looking to leave as soon as my DH can retire in about 4-5 years. My taxes went up a bunch and it’s just becoming more unaffordable unless you have very high paying jobs.

This is exactly what is happening. I’d rather them just say school is cancelled for the rest of the year if that’s the plan
