The Chinese study is googlable. I forget what site it was on, but you can find it. "corona 30 strains chinese study".
I don't think people understand that the models and the peaks and the projections are all built on the assumption that distancing and quarantine continue. The minute we stop, all bets are off, and the "war zones" we have seen will pale in comparison. There is no safe way to do school now. It doesn't matter how many old people individual kids avoid or how we do pickup---all those kids in a building with doors and furniture and bathrooms--even college kids can't stop wild spreading of things much less contagious than this.
And, yes. 18 months if necessary. Look at longitudinal studies of the 1918 pandemic. Survivors had weaker hearts--lot sof problems that shorten lifespans. It may not need to be that long, though. An effective treatment might help--even more research so we understand immunity better. It may be much sooner. But for right now, this is happening, and we can't stop tending to it because we don't like it. That would be irresponsible.
Even now, essential services are being performed. Chemo is being given. Mental help and education online. We are actually very lucky. I just hope we don't blow it. Lots of these debates won't age well.
Respectfully, none of what you just said answered any of my questions.
I did google that phrase, and the article that comes up says they discovered 30 MUTATIONS of the virus. This is not disputed. Coronaviruses, flu viruses, they all mutate. It's also not disputed that the mutations are not dramatic, in other words its not mutating quickly or drastically.
Secondly, children are far more likely to die from the flu every year and they also risk long term damage from contracting a bad case of the flu. Just by the numbers this is a FAR less dangerous illness for children.
And chemo is NOT being given to everyone who needs it or who would have received it if this pandemic wasn't going on. Trust me, I have a relative who knows this FIRST HAND so please, stop. Just like some of you are asking us to seal ourselves into panic rooms for the summer so we can save a life, what about my relative??? I guess it's ok she might die, right? As long as it's not from corona.

I never said that we don't have to improve/expand essential services. I won't tell you to "just stop" like you did me, because I find it infantalizing and demeaning when people say that to other adults.
So much for "not being snarky."
Personalizing this is devolving it into "comments section " level dscussion, and I want no part of that.
Everyone will do what they want. Not everyone is doomed to get this, and the people who get it the latest will have the benefit of all of the knowledge, treatments, insights, research, plasma and anything else that comes from these early cases.
Off to play with my kids!

Exactly, this is the reason for social distancing. People seem to think the purpose is to eradicate the virus which is not going to happen. Sorry, as scary as that may sound but that is the truth. Ofcourse there is going to be a second wave, children are not in school and everything is shut down. It doesn’t take science or psychic ability to know there will be some sort of second wave or surge.

I will not send my kids back to school even if they reopened tomorrow. Without virus and antibody testing, this is how the infection rate will go right back up. Go protest if you choose. The virus doesn’t care if you believe in it or not.
If you look, the fatality rate is close to 6% in NY. Almost 5.5% nationwide. That is nothing to take lightly. We all know people who have been hospitalized or killed by this virus.
No thank you. My kids are staying home.
Some moms have careers that require them to work 18 hours a day to develop the antibody tests, vaccines and treatments you seem to be so well versed in.
We can't all sit home and color all day.
That was rude. I have a career FYI and I am working many hours a day providing a vital service whilst also taking care of my three children.
I'm done even reading these boards. Not worth my time.
I’m also working from home and probably wouldn’t send my kids.
If school opens and other people want to, that’s fine. But schools should provide the option to complete the year remotely if you decide (with parents or paid tutors teaching—not expecting teachers to still do remote lessons).
