Wait. What does he mean no plan to reopen schools? Like ever? What? IF and when? Meaning they may NEVER open? That is a ridiculous statement
I don’t think he meant they never will. He went on to say that if any schools are saying they are going to reopen they will not be. (Right now) But it certainly seem like he implied they are not reopening this school year.
He doesn't like when anyone crosses him. It annoyed him when DeBlasio said schools were closed for the year. Now it's annoying him when districts are saying they want to reopen.
That's exactly it. he is just reminding everyone that his executive order is still until he announces otherwise. He is not predicting when because we don't know enough yet.

Cuomo - schools are closed. Period.
Am I the only one willing to send my child to school? There has already been discussion of strict protocols being put in place- masks/gloves/ curbside drop off/temp monitoring. I am perfectly comfortable with this. She is also a low risk child who lives with 2 low risk parents who are working from home and don't go out besides my biweekly grocery trips. No grandparent visits, no park, nothing. She'd go from home to school and then back again.
I seem to be the only one who feels this way. I don't think NY is ready to re-open non-essential businesses. But I'm really beginning to weigh the risk benefit ratio for schools and I feel that schools, with the proper precautions and parental cooperation (which I know there is no way to monitor), are a low enough risk that the benefit to our children is a reasonable trade-off.
I don't mean to sound like some lunatic protesting with a shotgun and a MAGA hat. I don't need my nails done or to eat in a restaurant. I'll wait 2 hours to get into the supermarket. I just want my DD to go to school.I'm just watching her regress before my eyes and it's like watching a slow train wreck that may or may not end.

Most schools in states way less hit than us, cancelled for the rest of the year. we are the worst state... of course the kids arent going back to school this year. i had hopes for a week in june to wrap things up at least but i dont really think it will happen. I think we will be lucky if they go back in September. but by then the second wave will be coming im sure....
Although I don’t think we will be going back until September - I think the other states closed schools earlier since their school year ends a lot earlier.

I would send my kids too - they need social interaction. As the time goes on I feel worse and worse for them. Today was the day I assumed they would go back. My older son is heading to middle school next year and is so unprepared - he has barely any work now.

A Million% would send my son to school tomorrow. And I’m considered high risk because of my asthma. But I feel the economy and schools being closed “indefinitely” is a higher risk that we are currently taking a huge gamble on. I use the term indefinitely because the government has no reliable target date and is scrambling to figure out wtf to do next.

I want to know if they are even working on a viable plan to open schools. Let's forget the when for now...but what about the how? Is anyone working on this? Or is pushing out the date in 2 week increments all they are doing?

Even if Cuomo announced schools would re-open in June i plan on keeping my kids home.
They are getting into the groove of distance learning so why would I take my chances. I know for a fact that several of my kid"s friends have not been social distancing. If you think they are traumatized being home imagine packing them off to school wearing a mask where they won't get recess or if they do it will be strange and everyone will be on edge.

Tbh I think they JUST started thinking of these “plans” and do not have a viable one set. I think they were so focused on “flattening the curve” they never took into consideration the risks. Like what happens if it takes 2+ months to flatten the curve, or 18 months for a reliable treatment or Vaccine. They should have been mitigating these risk from the start. Maybe it’s the project manager in me but when Cuomo started talking about how this “Stay at home” order is helping him connect with his adult kids the other day in his briefing, I could tell he was scrambling. Idk if they have Program Managers in government but they need them or more reliable ones.
And I’m in NJ, Gov. Murphy just follows Cuomo, so they are one in the same right now.

I will not send my kids back to school even if they reopened tomorrow. Without virus and antibody testing, this is how the infection rate will go right back up. Go protest if you choose. The virus doesn’t care if you believe in it or not.
If you look, the fatality rate is close to 6% in NY. Almost 5.5% nationwide. That is nothing to take lightly. We all know people who have been hospitalized or killed by this virus.
No thank you. My kids are staying home.

Where are they getting the supplies (ie. Masks, gloves, etc) to supply every child everyday?

If 10 weeks of distance learning means your child will be unprepared for middle school - they were never prepared to begin with.

I agree. I’m not sending my kids to school this spring even if they reopen. I know that children rarely become very ill from this virus, but, with how contagious it is and them constantly touching every surface, touching their faces, biting their nails, and not being great about washing hands at school ... they’d definitely become infected. A 5 year old girl in Detroit just died from the virus... my kids have severe allergies including my 1 year old who was hospitalized for breathing troubles from the flu a few months ago ... not to mention the risk to me and dh... so I am not taking a chance of them bringing this virus home while there are still so many people infected & this thing being so contagious & deadly. They’re doing fine with distance learning and I have 4 kids very close in age so they have built in playmates. I’m not in a rush to send them back.

Nope, I'm with you. If the numbers continue to trend down and the schools have proper plans in place, I would have no problem sending my kids back to school. I would not do it tomorrow just because the virus is still so active here and I think we need some more time, but towards the end of May or June? Sure.
There are just so many pieces to this. If they open non-essential business and people are forced to go back to work, who is watching their kids if they don't re-open schools? Until September when they can "hopefully" re-open? What will working parents do? This is such a logistical issue for parents.

Cuomo has said many times that they won’t reopen businesses without reopening schools.

Cuomo - schools are closed. Period.
The white house reopening plan has schools opening in phase two. I haven't actually found what the requirements are supposed to be in order to get to phase two though. Obviously Cuomo may go with his own plan but that's something to at least consider since hopefully the scientists had a hand in forming it.

The fatality rate is no where near that. They have no idea how many people have had it. They keep saying it's super important to stay home because up to 80% of people can have the virus and have mild to no symptoms at all. The death rate is inflated. They are not testing everyone with no symptoms or even mild symptoms. I can't tell you how many people I know say they had a period of a week or so when they couldn't taste or smell anything and now they know that is one of the symptoms of the virus. Yeah a lot of people have died, but once we get the antibody tests done and we see how many people have actually had it, that death rate is going to be A LOT lower.

I would send my kids to school if they opened. I have a child w/ special needs who is regressing big time.

I read this yesterday. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/04/17/health/santa-clara-coronavirus-infections-study/index.html

Yes I think the antibody tests will show a lot more people had it without knowing.

The white house reopening plan has schools opening in phase two. I haven't actually found what the requirements are supposed to be in order to get to phase two though. Obviously Cuomo may go with his own plan but that's something to at least consider since hopefully the scientists had a hand in forming it.
I think the prerequisites to start Phase 2 is at least 2 successful weeks in phase 1 and still meet the requirements of phase 1 (infection rate not increasing, enough hospital capacity, etc). There is the and/or section at the very beginning of the document.

OK. Let's just say it this way - 42,897 people are dead because of this virus. Is that fair to say, or is that made up or over inflated too?
I'm done even reading you nay-sayer's opinions. From day one.
