I curse like an animal.... I do know when it's not appropriate - work meetings, in front of my FIL in front of other people's kids but I do curse a lot

to me it's a word, there are way worse things I could do than curse

If cursing is ghetto, I must be the head of the ghetto's civic association! And running for mayor of the ghetto as well!

I curse, but not when it would be inappropriate or offensive to my surrounding.

Cursing is not a sign of low intelligence, ghetto-ness or anything else. It's a form of self-expression and typically used to add emphasis.

Re: Cursing

I don't really curse. Once in a while in the car I may say sheet or azz as a reaction but that is about it. My parents didn't really curse either, I may have heard my dad say sheet once in awhile.

Re: Cursing

both DH and I curse a lot - we try not to infront of DS (7) but it happens. When it does, we tell him sorry and that we know we shouldn't in front of him.
We also point out that these words are adult words and not to be spoken by kids and that he'll be in trouble if he says them. We try not to let him listen to music with curse words, but being that we listen to a lot of metal in the household and car, that doesn't always work!

We tell him none of that language is appropriate for kids and if he wants to sing anything (which he doesn't anyway) that he can't sing the curse words.

It's working for now..

I grew up in a house where my mom never cursed and my dad only did if he was very heated about something.
I however do find that I curse once in a while in every day language. Not in front of the kids, but talking to DH or at work. If something is bullshet, i call bullshet... if something is totally out of line ill say what the **** is the matter with that person. Recently i noticed i do this when talking to my mom and she doesnt comment on it, but i bet it grinds her gears lol. Its seldom and im not going to stop.
The thing i do need to work on is other words in front of my kids --- like "he was driving like an idiot" or "what a moron"... or "that was really stupid"... not directed AT my kids, but said in front of them. My 5 year old always says "mom that isnt very nice" lol

I do, a lot. It’s peppered into my daily conversation.

I try not to in front of kids, and I don’t have kids so sometimes I fck up and slip. They’ll live!

I rarely curse and get annoyed when others (mainly my sister) curse in front of them. As far as I know my kids really don't know much about cursing at all. With that said, they listen to plenty of explicit music. Not rap but Pink, Lady Gaga, etc. and they do sing along but I've never heard a clear one come out of their mouths so I haven't cut them off yet.

There are actually studies that say its a sign of higher IQ....quite the contrary to "ghetto-ness" actually.

As just one article on the subject: https://nypost.com/2017/08/28/smarter-people-are-more-likely-to-use-curse-words/

My kids are 13, 11, and 8 and I NEVER cursed in front of them...until this May when somehow they managed to get a volleyball stuck underneath our motorized garage door. The whole door crumpled and caved in upon itself when met with the resistance.

I was cursing outside like I’ve never cursed before...the curses were FLYING! Wouldn’t you know, at that moment, the boys in my oldest DD’s class were walking by the front of the house. My friend called to report that her son told her, “Mrs. C was screaming out the F word when we walked by their house!” Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I curse plenty and in front of my kids. They are 7 and 4, they know they are not supposed to curse but sometimes they do, which to me, isn't the end of the world. My kids would not curse at school or anything like that but if they drop something they might say SHIT lol

It's funny because my sister hardly ever curses and my youngest niece went through a period where she was saying sh!t and f#ck as a toddler. Meanwhile, my son never went through that phase. One time at 4 he said someone called him the S word and when I asked him what it was, he said "Stupid".

We used to laugh all the time how ironic it was that my niece was cursing.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Cursing

I don’t curse too much. The only time I really curse is when I drive. I need to really watch that, though, or else I’ll get fined for that here.

I also curse in the kitchen if something goes wrong. It’s usually just the F word.

I guess I do curse a bit. I’m also a total hypocrite because my students (adults in university) will say a curse word and I have to correct them and tell them not to use that language. I teach them to be teachers and I can’t have them using that language in front of their future classes. Also they usually will go to an English speaking country as part of their studies and I don’t want them to be disrespectful.

I curse a lot. I’m mindful in front of other people, but at home I let it fly, only if I’m really mad or passionate about something... not just in normal conversation. Thankfully my kids haven’t picked it up & never use those words.. they seem to have an understanding that it’s not language they should use in front of others. They seem to get the context.

Yes. If the driver you are yelling at sees you mouth a$$hole or an F you, or the finger, they can take down your plate number and you will receive a fine in the mail. You can’t say these things to people even in public. It also depends on the other person.

I got sued by my ex because I said something in public (on FB) about him. He lost, but if I do it again, I can get in a lot of trouble.

Same. I am trying to reel it in though because sometimes I slip when it's not appropriate.

Me too...my kids know they can’t curse. It’s an “adult” thing to them like drinking alcohol, driving, etc.

Cursing

I rarely curse. If I do, it's in front of my DH or my sister. I also don't consider sh!t to be a "real" curse word, even though I rarely say that too. The F word bothers me more really. I don't care if people curse, but when the F bomb comes out in daily conversation for no other reason than to just put a word in there, it bothers me.

I generally do not curse. My dad never did growing, my mom would from time to time. If I curse now as an adult in front of my dad he will call me out on it and bring attention to the fact I cursed.

I dont think it appropriate to curse in front of kids, I hated it when my mom did. Conversational cursing is not allowed in most situations and children have no concept of that they just see adult or parents as cursing.

On the flip, research shows saying the F word at times can be freeing and a stress relief
