Agree. It’s a tough one.
I wouldn’t want to be in law enforcement right now. I was watching the dash cam of an officer getting shot during a routine road stop. I couldn’t imagine the adrenaline going when you know someone has a past record and is resisting.
Unfortunately this mistake is going to ruin this officers life. And this young man’s mistake of resisting arrest cost him his life. It’s a lose lose situation.
My hope is that all officers will be wearing body cams and cars will have dash cams so that maybe, just maybe, more people will comply because if an officer is truly doing something wrong it won’t be a ‘he said, she said’ thing but it will all be on camera.
More respect for the law needs to be taught to kids also. My husband just told my kid that if you get pulled over and they ask you to quack like a duck, you quack like a duck. You do as you are told.
Yes because police officers NEVER take advantage right? That's some BS statement.
I never said that but my point is you listen to the law and you won’t get into worse situations. You can sue the police after the fact. You can’t do so after you are dead.
How about holding police officers accountable for their wrong doing. Maybe if we started seeing that more often then there wouldn't be such an issue with the lack of respect for them. It goes both ways. Cops shouldn't be respected just because of their job title.

This is the type of attitude that gets people in trouble. Of course cops aren’t always in the right and there have been cases of them abusing power. But every year in the US there are millions of interactions between police offers and civilians and the vast majority occur without incident. Teaching our youth to respect authority isn’t a bad thing.

Absolutely but if you pick and choose and your children don’t have respect for the police and the law, they will get themselves in a situation like this.

I don’t think police should be judge, jury, and executioner. I also think they need 4 year degrees and ongoing psych exams.
A four year degree requirement is going to make for a lot less police. Which depending on who you talk to might be the goal. I believe you need a 4 year degree to be promoted to certain ranks.

But...this was the media's fault, right? You do see how racism is VERY REAL and alive and well without the media. How can you not see that? I also the "luckily he is alive" comment is a pretty disgusting thing to say. The fact that this happened and yet people still act like LO can do no wrong, that it is always the black persons fault for not listening, says a lot about you.

Lucky to be alive should never be something expressed after a traffic stop. I have never expressed that sediment after being stopped for a traffic violation but as a white woman- getting shot by a PO was never a concern or fear of mine. That is what white privilege looks like

Studies show that officers who have four year degrees tend to de-escalate and don’t have to use their weapon as much.
Only 30% of officers have a 4 year degree. I think that’s scary.
If lawyers have to go to school for years and years to learn the law, cops shouldn’t be “qualified” in a matter of weeks to carry weapons and uphold/enforce the law.

This is referencing the Officer Joe Gutierrez incident with the Army Lt. in VA of whom did nothing to warrant Guitierrez reaction other then being black. No matter what I say - you are not getting it. The privilege is being in my car and not worrying that I might get shot by that officer. Privilege is that officier walking to my car and ASSUMING their safety because I am white. The concept of white privilege and systematic racism appears to be over your head.

Has what never happened to a white person? Getting mistreated by a police officer because of their color? I think everyone can safely say the answer to that is no. I am sure white people have been mistreated by police officers, but the reason for that mistreatment was not because they were white.

If it has happened, they were extremely isolated incidents. The fact that you can't see POC are treated very differently than white people tells me everything I need to know about you. Stop making this about white people being victims.

Initial police training in the academy is 6 months. If police need to be educated like lawyers, they should be paid like lawyers. Not sure if many departments are willing to do that.

She should not have been charged with manslaughter, plain and simple. If a doctor makes an error and accidentally kills a patient, there are consequences, but jail time is not one of them. This is the same thing.
Personally I hope that there is a huge decline in people who want to go into law enforcement. Then people might start to understand and respect the impossible position that the police force has been put in.

I know many people who have retired recently from law enforcement. They just couldn’t do it anymore. There are also those who stay and struggle with depression and anxiety.
