What I meant was if you were a guidance counselor in a LI public school and DH was a teacher in a LI public school then you should be able to manage the cost of daycare for two kids. Sometimes you have to learn to sacrifice. I'm stay at home because of the cost of daycare for two kids... there is no perfect answer. Good luck

I don't generally call people out but that was out of line. How can judge someone's financial situation without knowing them? Do your know their income to debt ratio? Do you know if they have a mortgage? Major medical bills? Student loans? These are things that cannot be sacrificed.

ITA you dont know her personal situation to make this kind of statement. How do you know that she already isnt sacrificing?

Thank you.

To Ann, Please don't tell me what I should be able to manage. I have student loans, a car, and a mortgage. I know all about sacrifice. I've been a SAHM since my older daughter was born. I'm going back to work partly because I have to and partly because I want to. But finding reliable childcare that won't cost the lion's share of my take home pay is challenging. I know there's no perfect answer, but I thought that other mothers might have some ideas, or at least offer some support. You offered neither one. Please don't create drama where none existed.

Day care cost$ for two kids -

We use an au pair, it was the most economical option and it has been amazing for us. I don't have to worry about getting the kids packed up, wondering about how they are napping, pooping, acting, etc. They get to do all sorts of fun things with her and they spend their down time at home. Do yo both work in public schools out here on LI?

No, I work in southeast Queens and my husband works on the south shore in Suffolk. I'd do all the pickups and drop offs.

Would you consider preschool for DD? Maybe a 2-3 program and then daycare 2 days a week?

What Miss Fabulous said.

Also NYC guidance counselors often make more than some LI districts so your argument from that end is wrong.

I know the poster personally and there is nothing she would not sacrafice for her children how DARE YOU come on here with your HTH statements and try to act like you know how she should live her life.

You are rude and condescending.

ETA - And to add...........I agree with what everyone else said, you have NO idea what the financial situation is so to just tell her to "cut back" is absurd. I too am a SAHM and we have found a way to manage given OUR situation however, I would never tell someone what they should and should not be able to afford and manage without knowing any details of THEIR financial life. That was such a silly, ridiculous statement you made.

I also struggle with the thought of 2 in daycare. My DD is in an in-home, licensed and insured Family Daycare. I love it and more importantly she loves it. The cost for one is a lot less expensive than large centers. We would also never be able to afford a Nanny but now that DD is in this small daycare and learning so much and interacting with kids that range from 12 weeks to 4, I don't think I would want a Nanny even if we could afford it.

My place is in Levittown (south of Hempstead Tpke and very close to SS). If you would like more information, please feel free to FM.

You've got some cajones to come on here and say this. When you make a decision about your kids name you can make a decision about how someone else should spend their money.

On the Old Westbury campus there is a daycare that I've been told is really reasonable. I'm not sure if it's only open to staff and faculty or everyone but it doesn't hurt to try.

OP I would look for family daycares run out of a home. Most run about $50 or less a day, and give sibling discounts.

Wow!

No matter how much income they have, The thought of your expenses going up $500 a week would make anyone's head spin.

I ALWAYS love the "you just need to sacrifice a few things to stay home."
Chat Icon

to the OP.. The cost is insane but you get used to it after a while. It's just another bill to pay. Once my daycare doubled, my month requires stricter budgeting to make sure everyone still gets paid & we still eat & have gas in the cars. I'm a spreadsheet junkie these days :)

I'm not looking to start anything but just to say so not to look oblivious: DH and I had student loans, we had major medical expenses that hit whatever savings we had, mortgage ... yup... we have that ... we do not have a smart phone .. up until 6 months ago only one TV ... we shared one 8 year old car, when DH was younger he told me he could not afford to date because he wanted to get a head start paying off student loans ..,. his dad had cancer when he was 2 so he learned early how to budget on one income; we did not buy our first house until we were in our late 30's and had to hold off having kids because my job at the time did not make enough and he was out of work. I'm not looking for sympathy and some have it worse which is why I try to donate even as little as $20 that I can spare to St. Jude's and the Bowery Mission. Again, I hope she is able to work things out ... it is never easy and sometimes we get ourselves into things that we are not prepared for. May you all keep warm on this frigid dayChat Icon

DD1 will be almost 3 and DD2 will be close to a year old when I go back to work in September. I'm checking out day care centers in my area, and tuition is going eat 2/3 to 3/4 of my take-home pay. Family can't help and working from home isn't an option (I'm a guidance counselor and DH is a teacher).

Working moms of 2+, how are you doing this??

Eta: How do I find a reputable in- home site? I have the NY Dept of health website so I can see if they've been cited. I'll take suggestions. I'm looking in East Meadow, Bellmore, or Merrick.

Not sure if you heard of it, but you can try Care.com. As someone else mentioned, in home providers are less expensive when I was looking. Many have closed down due to lack of enrollment because people are out of work but they exist.

Seriously -- the OP is coming on here looking for some ideas and you are kicking her while she's down. There's no need for your HTT attitude that "well if *I* could do it, then why can't YOU do it..guess I just SAAAACRIFICE more than you" Chat Icon

To the OP -- I would also recommend talking to other teachers in your school. I've found that most of my teacher friends have found daycare from asking around.

Very true. I just figured I'd be able to keep a little bit more of my salary, but I guess not. I want both my daughters to have top of the line care, so I'll pay up... and I'll have to show them this thread when they're teenagers and complain that I never did anything for them!

Re: Day care cost$ for two kids -

I use Children's Nest daycare. They have two locations. One on Merrick Avenue in Merrick and the other in Wantagh. I have nothing but great things to say about them. My daughter has been there since she was 3 months old and she is now 3 1/2 years old. They really stress early childhood education. I would rather use a large daycare than an in-home. I feel that someone is always watching what others are doing rather than in an in-home situation where its just one caregiver and kids. As for the price, you can always ask for a discount. That is what I did with my daughter and we got one.
