What I meant was if you were a guidance counselor in a LI public school and DH was a teacher in a LI public school then you should be able to manage the cost of daycare for two kids. Sometimes you have to learn to sacrifice. I'm stay at home because of the cost of daycare for two kids... there is no perfect answer. Good luck

I don't generally call people out but that was out of line. How can judge someone's financial situation without knowing them? Do your know their income to debt ratio? Do you know if they have a mortgage? Major medical bills? Student loans? These are things that cannot be sacrificed.

I'm not looking to start anything but just to say so not to look oblivious: DH and I had student loans, we had major medical expenses that hit whatever savings we had, mortgage ... yup... we have that ... we do not have a smart phone .. up until 6 months ago only one TV ... we shared one 8 year old car, when DH was younger he told me he could not afford to date because he wanted to get a head start paying off student loans ..,. his dad had cancer when he was 2 so he learned early how to budget on one income; we did not buy our first house until we were in our late 30's and had to hold off having kids because my job at the time did not make enough and he was out of work. I'm not looking for sympathy and some have it worse which is why I try to donate even as little as $20 that I can spare to St. Jude's and the Bowery Mission. Again, I hope she is able to work things out ... it is never easy and sometimes we get ourselves into things that we are not prepared for. May you all keep warm on this frigid dayChat Icon

OP came on here looking for advice and instead of giving her advice, you chose to be condescending and judgmental.

OP - if you have the room to spare, I would look into an au pair. One of my best friends has 3 kids with one on the way and it was the most economical way for them to afford child care.

Do yo both work in public schools out here on LI?

No, I work in southeast Queens and my husband works on the south shore in Suffolk. I'd do all the pickups and drop offs.

every once in a while i need to break this out..this is the time

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I've ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response was there anything that could even be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul!" - Host

Re: Day care cost$ for two kids -

I'm in this situation now. DS (3) is in daycare full time and I am expecting twins in May. For me to put all 3 kids in daycare full time would be $2500/month...roughly equal to another mortgage payment. We simply can't do that. So my DS is either staying there another year til kindergarten or we are going to try to enter him into the public pre-k "lotto" which would cost a lot less...I don't really want him to leave daycare because we like it but $ talks. And as for the babies, I am going to WFH 2 days a week and on the other 3 days I am hiring a nanny to come to my house. Once the babies are bigger we will consider daycare again. This stresses me out daily. Chat Icon

Just remember, that if you can swing it, even if it is going to make things tight, it is only temporary. You will have your children forever. I think it's a great tradeoff.
