Most people put their children in very early on. They adjust because they are not old enough to know the difference. My daughter went to daycare at 9 months and it was horrible for a while. Eventually she loved it but in the beginning she literally had to be removed from me every morning.
Hang in there. It will get better.
It may take a little longer because he sees you during the day but it will get better.
I agree....most kids are in at the infant stage. My daughter began at 2 years and she would cry and just lose it when I left. I got through it by not letting it get to me. (Plus I had a tiny window of time to drop her off and get to my job at the time) I just walked away and knew she'd calm down soon enough. It took a good month or two before she stopped doing it...before long she didn't want me to take her in, she wanted to go alone!!!
The every-other-day thing might be making it harder for him. It could also be that getting to see you there makes it harder on him as well. As long as he is eventually getting over it and goes back to playing he is fine...if he spends the entire day crying, that's different.
eta-kids will cry if you leave them with grandparents or a private babysitter as well....so it isn't "daycare."

just wanted to give you hugs
and what Michele said seems to make sense to me. also when he was at the old school did he see you as much? or was he in his room and you picked him up when it was time to go home?
He didnt go to school prior to this-
My last job I only work 4 days & 15 hrs/week- so he was with grandma all the time
ohhhh! awww I thought he went along with you last time too.
I bet he'll adjust real soon and hope it gets better for you and Ryan!
