Daycare?

So I'm looking into part time day care and the most recommended center in my area's website says the following: "Our Infant, three months through eighteen months old, program is designed specifically to meet the needs of working parents. Drop off starts as early as 7:00 A.M and pick up goes as late as 5:30 P.M."

Where do these parents work? Around the corner from the daycare? Am I missing something? Wouldn't these hours exclude the majority of working parents, since aside from teachers most people work until 5? I want to know what person who works until 5, even if ON LI is picking their kid up by 5:30? Are there magical roads for parents to take that aren't full of traffic during rush hour?

Please someone tell me this is weird and I'm not insane.

My daycare's "regular" hours are 8:30-5:30 ! I wind up have to pay extra for early drop off and late pick up. The only daycare that had more or less good hours but we didn't enroll was tutor time.

Our daycare is open 6:30-6:30. You pay extra hours before 8:00 and after 6:00. I don't see how they could possibly expect everyone to be able to pick up at 5:30, that's crazy.

Our daycare's latest pick up is 6:00. I was shocked even by that, because my normal business hours do not allow me to pick up my DS on time, as I work a good 15 miles away from home and also travel to client sites frequently. I often wonder how parents who commute to the city do this. Other ones in our area were also 5:30 pick ups so I couldn't even consider them. The closest one that offers a 6:30-7 pickup is over 20 minutes from our house with no traffic. Honestly in this day and age I just don't understand how this is normal. Like you said, even if someone works until 5:00 normally, traffic happens, you might get a late start heading home - but to be there by 5:30 is ridiculous. Even if my center offered a late pickup for extra $ I would totally go for it. I am going to have to leave work a few minutes early in order to get there in time for pick up.

Re: Daycare?

We toured a daycare that closed at 6. I knew I couldn't get there by 6 anyway but hoped we could hire someone to pick up at 5:30/ 6 pm. So we visited around 4:30 and there were hardly any kids! Most kids were picked up by 3:30-4 and the rest were condensed Into one classroom.

I wondered how these kids were being picked up so early, then felt bad knowing my kids would be the last for pick up!!!

Daycare?

Mine is open I believe from 730-530 but I drop off around 9 (I work 930-530) and DH picks up between 430 & 530 (he works either 7-4 or 8-5).

Re: Daycare?

That's why I moved my dd to a daycare around the corner from my job. It's open 8-6. I work 9-5, but who can get out by 5 every day, it's crazy! It's so much less stressful for me now that dd is right near me so I know even if I have to work a little later, I can get her I'm time.

Ours too. Dd is in a daycare near where I work (not live) and though there are significant drawbacks to this, at least I don't have to pay for extended hours.

The earliest a daycare opens by me is 7:30 and most close by 6. DH and I both work in the city so...that didn't work us. We got a nanny for this reason.

Our day care is 7am-6:30pm. DH drops the kids off and I work flex time so I can pick them up. Otherwise, I wouldn't get there by 6:30pm.

They daycare DD goes to is open 7am-6pm. Either DH or my dad will pick her up by 4, but I would probably get there just in time if I get out at 5, with traffic. I have seen some daycares that are open 630-630, I believe one tutor time I called had that option. There was also another daycare I called that was open until 7, but that was the latest time I heard of.

Ask if they have extended hours. The daycare that our LO goes to says 8-4 but it's actually open 630-630, sometimes you have to pay extra (we got a discount so we don't). I keep telling someone I know who is a teacher "Open a daycare from 5AM-8PM", she'll make SO much money!!!! I told her to just have the teachers work regular teaching hours (in the classroom, I know teachers work WAY more than that) and a daycare professional work the others.

That's crazy. Our daycare's normal hours are 7am-6pm but, they have early drop off from 6:30-7am and late pick up from 6pm-7pm (both for an extra charge).

The majority of the people who utilize the daycare do have at least one parent working in the area but, there are many who work in NYC. We didn't find any other daycares in the area that did that so it was kind of our only choice and we love it.

Re: Daycare?

It seems like most daycares have these sort of hours. Maybe it's a financial issue where it concerns their employees. I wonder if it's just difficult for them to stay open too long since then they would have to hire more people for separate shifts. The daycares/preschools I've worked at in the past where they DO stay open more than 10 hours were still closed by 6:30 and those rarely seemed to offer infant care.

I think if neither parent (or a family member) can pick up before 6:00 then a best bet is probably finding a home daycare or nanny instead. I run a home daycare and it's probably a lot easier on parents since I just work with their schedule rather than having 'set' hours. Although I will say that I try not to take on anyone who works too late because I'm a mom too and have a lot to get done myself once 5:30/6:00 hits (with making dinner, giving my kids baths, etc). So, yeah, I'm sure it is difficult for late working parents Chat Icon

DD regular daycare hours are from 8am-6pm. There is an extra charge for early drop off (6:30am-8am) and then from 6pm-7pm. Thankfully I get out of work at 5:15 and I am a mile from the place.

Our daycare is open 7-6. Your child can be there for 10 hours total. I drop off at 7 (I'm literally the first person there) and pick up at 4:45.

Our daycare has hours from 7am-6:30pm. You can pay extra for care starting at 6:30am. I love them and it is a huge plus that they have such great hours because traffic can be tricky getting home.

Ok, I'm not that crazy.....thank you! I commute to the city 2 days a week (WAH other 3) so I only need care for 2 days, which might be tough in a center to begin with, never mind the fact that the earliest DH or I (he's also in the city) could get there would be around 6:30. I have no problem paying extra for extended hours, as long as they're offered!

We're also considering hiring a babysitter, but again it would need to be someone who was ok with only 2 days a week. I hadn't really thought of an in home daycare. It's hard because I'm the first of my friends to be pregnant and I know absolutely no one on LI so getting recs, advice, etc is tough.

I pay for 7-4:30 (I pick up earlier) any later than that you get charged unless you drop off at 8 or later

Where are you located?
My Tutor Time offered a 2 day a week option and the hours were 630 am to 630 pm with no extra fee for "early" drop off or "late" pick up

Daycare?

This is going to be interesting! I need to start looking into Day Care but we have no idea where we will be living when I go back to work--Manhattan or somewhere in Queens. We both work in Manhattan and both work until about 7 or 8pm so someone is going to have to change their schedule drastically. I would have thought most day cares had after hours options!

Unless you can work flex time, your best bet will be a nanny. Or day care + a babysitter. I have never heard of any day care staying open until 8:30!
