well, there is NOTHING wrong with grilled cheese sandwhiches??
How is that unhealthy
Well, the butter and cheese are full of fat ,but with that said, I grew up on junky foods (Fish Sticks, tator tots, pot pies, etc.) and I have no health problems thus far in life, nor do my siblings.
Health problems run in my family Almost everyone has heart disease and cancer. I couldnt give Cailen stuff like this in good conscience. Its bad enough he will gravitate towards it on his own when he is your everyday average kid making his own food choices. I'm hoping maybe he will naturally make better choices if we can present them in a good way, but we'll see.

I dont use butter, I use cheddar cheese. Cheese is not a bad thing if you dont have it all the time. I dont see my boys eating salads at 11 months, although I wish.

Oh wow - wouldnt that be great if little boys liked salads???
Home made food is very different than school/daycare food - your grilled cheese is probably very different than their grilled cheese....
Everything in moderation, yes - I totally agree. Don't forget, DH and I are vegan, so there wont be too many of those options in our house to begin with, but eventually we are resigned to the fact that Cailen may very well turn into the standard american eater as long as he is living in long island (when I lived in vermont, there were a lot of kids who really ate very healthfully!)

to respond to the OP, I would say that 9 months seems very young to be expecting them to eat off of the menu you describe. Bella was happily eating cheerios and the Stage 3 mush meals with her two teeth...she took a bit to start eating "bigger" foods...and even so, we did so at her pace.
I STILL bring all of Bella's meals and drinks into daycare...she won't start getting a menu until 3 I believe.

Thanks everyone. I actually tried to feed him grilled cheese this afternoon and he ate it, but the pieces were so tiny that it took an hour to get through half the sandwich. I am sticking with jars for a bit longer!

That is ridiculous.
Ridiculous is the first word that came to mind for me too. 9 months? No way....my kids were just starting to have tastes of table food at that age. Somewhere between 9 months and a year they were eating more table food but more simple stuff. All those things sound like toddler food, make sure you are adamant about them not giving him any, not even tastes if you don't want him having it.

dd is totally NOT eating steak BUT if I have a piece of chicken i will shred less then a dime size peice for her just for the "table food experience". Aside from that, I personally dont want anyone but me giving her table food. I feel like God forbid she chokes etc... I will be right there. I know there is like a 4:1 ratio in the daycare settings. I just dont trust my dd to be chewing on a steak while watching 3 other children. I think you have to go with your gut not pressure of the school.

When I worked at the daycare, most kids started eating the school provided lunch, or at least parts of it, anywhere from 8-9 months. Most we're fully on it at about 11 months-year.

I'd like to hear from moms whose kids are eating table foods around 9 months - there must be some since that is apparently the norm in my daycare. I just want to be assured that if they do give him something, he will be able to handle it and they will watch him to make sure he doesn't choke.
Steven is a week over 9 months. He eats all table food. So, whatever we are having he has.
While I can't assure you that dacare will be abe to watch him and make sure he doesn't choke, I can say that from my experience, Steven got used to table food very quickly. I was seriously slacking in the table food department and as soon as I started giving him things like pasta and stars, he wanted NO part of baby food. He refused the stage 3 after he was 8 months. I sometimes give him the Gerber Graduates meals or the pasta pick ups. the table food he does have is pretty small, i mean I'm not giving him a big chunk of chicken and letting him chow down. I would NOT give him french fries or salsbury steak, but chicken turkey grilled cheese...all of that I would give him.
The decision is ultimately up to you. And, if you're not comfortable, then send him with the jarred food. They can't give him the other stuff if you say no.

May I ask what was served, and, was it cut up for the kids (or did the kids just hold an entire slice of pizza for example)?

Thanks for your input! Do you feed him one piece at a time, or just put a bunch of pieces on his high chair for him to feed himself? My son is good at feeding himself, but he tends to keep shoveling it in before he finishes swallowing what is already in his mouth.

I'll put a few (like 3 or 4) pieces on his tray. If he is really slow, I'll feed him some that I have on the side. Sometimes he does shovel it in, sometimes he paces himself. I guess it depends on how hungry he is. Since he shovels it in, maybe put 3 really small pieces on the tray, this way if he goes overboard then it still won't be too much at once.
I also noticed that now that I make the pieces larger, he finishes one piece before he puts the next in. I think because he knows he can't fit any more in his mouth until he finishes that piece.

Re: Daycare making me feel like my child is not as advanced as he should be :(
while i think there is NOTHING wrong with a 9 month old eating table food, (my dd did- she was jarred food for about 2 months just so i could get the feel of what she liked, and then it was the same stuff in adult pureed form- sweet potatoes, squash, peas, and every fruit imaginable....little but little, with cheerios and gerber puffs, she got taht pincer grasp down, and by 9 months was eating my homeade meatballs, pasta, chicken with melted cheese, just everything...), i would have a problem with my child eating what the daycare gives them, almost like fast food...i have nothing against a grilled cheese (but the way i make it, lightly buttered on whole grain bread, things like this)....i would send him with your food, and even when he starts really getting into picking everything up and eating on his own, id still send him with your food....PBJs, YOUR homeade broccoli already cut up in a tuperware- all they would have to do is heat and serve...your turkey birgers or boca burgers....get it? no thanks to the FF and fried chicken fingers....although no, i dont think its bad for kids to eat it, but if your talking day care, 5 days a week, 2 meals a day....and they offer the minimum that you said, well, thats a couple grilled cheese and a couple slices a pizza and a lot of FF a week.....k, thats it....

Re: Daycare making me feel like my child is not as advanced as he should be :(
Our daycare makes us provide their food until they are 1 year. I still give her only baby food and cheerios. She can't handle anything else without very close monitering and she is 8 months. I can't see that changing a great deal in one month I think that is a little advanced to me.
