DD is being treated for whooping cough(pertussis)
Jordan(she is 8) was sick about 2 weeks ago pretty bad, fever, cold symptoms, coughing for about a week. Then she was fine for about a week. Well the past 2 days she is fine except she is coughing so bad that she can not catch her breath. She literally will cough non stop for 2-3 hours at at time. She has reactive airway disorder so I was attributing this to that. Well after a 4 hour coughing fit from 3am to 7am, and the nebulizer and cough meds doing nothing, I called the Dr. She was seen right away and he thinks she has Whooping Cough(pertussis) . He said her symptoms were classic but the test takes a week to get back. He is treating her as if she has it with antibiotics and Cough meds with Codiene to suppress her respitory system. My poor kid, lets hope he is wrong. ETA: she was vaccinated for this but the Dr said it doesnt really matter and he has been seeing quite a few cases around lately

OMG, wow. When was her last vaccine?
Also are they going to treat the baby and is the baby fully vaccinated?
How scary!

Re: DD is being treated for whooping cough(pertussis)
I think she was vaccinated when she was pretty small and he told me that kids are starting to get revaccinated in 6th grade because it is making a comeback. She is in 2nd grade. When the test results come back, if it is positive my entire family will have to be treated It takes 7 days for the results We were all sick right after Jordan a few weeks ago, so it is not looking good.(Possibly stage 1)

Re: DD is being treated for whooping cough(pertussis)
DH got this right after we got married. He went to allergists, cat scan, ENT before he finally went somewhere and had a coughing fit and they diagosed it on the spot.
If you get the right Rx ASAP its much better.
Apparently, the Chinese call it the 100 day cough b/c it lingers for a long time.
You just need to tell her when she starts coughing to remain calm. If she panics, she will never catch her breath.
Hope she feels better.

Wow. That's a long time.
Does the ped feel the baby's vaccine should prevent it? Or does it just help the child to get a mild case only?

He basically said it may help or if may do nothing. If we start the meds on the baby before she starts the coughing part of whooping cough, it should make it milder or shorter. Lets hope he is wrong, but he did not think he was.

Re: DD is being treated for whooping cough(pertussis)
wow.... that's not terribly reassuring that she was immunized and still caught it....
and this was one of the immunizations that's the most important for LI kids/babies becuase it's going around
I hope she gets better soon

It sounds to me that the vaccine is not highly effective.

Some are attributing it to "cocooning"... basically since some are choosing not vaccinate it's making it less effective for those who do. My 4yr old niece was vaccinated and got it. It's a scary thing to watch I hope it turns out your daughter doesn't have it. Did they put the rest of you on antibiotics yet? They did that with my BILs family as a precaution

as I posted they also claim alot has to do with adults that do not keep up with it--pertussis is spread easy-if my doc can get it from his pediatrican then there u go. I for example went 3x for mmr to be immune it simply would nto take..there are several women on here I know that had the same issue. The key was it was caught early--- prayers to u again and def is scary but u caught it early--good for you! I get so scared because Max catches everything even if its wiped down-not always bad things but hes a twin, tiny and picky eater-3 out of 4 never had this issue..I am just not used to it...
