decorating advice (w/pic) UPDATED!!
OK, imagine this room empty (this isn't our furniture)...its appearing a little bit longer than it is (the pic is alittle skewed). The picture taker is standing facing the den, behind them is the kitchen (its all open, seperated by a small kitchen/bar built in)
I think I want: a sectional couch, L shaped (what color?) and either an entertainment center (w/a flat screen) or a tv stand
Probably all in the same spots as the furniture in the pics. Any other ideas? I also should get a big area rug too right??
UPDATE: so this is what I did thanks to all of your suggestions. We will be mounting a flat screen across from the couch and getting a club chair for the right of the mounted TV...and possibly some sort of window treatment. I also want a tray for the ottoman for our drinks and stuff. The decorating on the mantle is not done yet so ignore that! Any other suggestions?

Do you want the focal point to be on that fireplace or the TV?

Re: decorating advice (w/pic)
LOVE the room. but why isn't the FP area being utilized?
if you want a sectional i would place closer to the fireplace. one side against the window (midway on long wall) and other facing the FP (sofa table behind) with the EC on the wall across from the windows. i like the leather couch but IMO the EC is too big and too overwhelming for the room.
in re: to couch color, you have many options. i actually like the leather couch and color that is currently in the room. i would definitly get an area rug but something more warm and vibrant. the color and design of the current rug is too neutral and boring.

Re: decorating advice (w/pic)
well, this will be our den/TV room, so I think I'd like the focal point to be the TV.
I should have also said that to the left of the ent center (if your standing in front of it) in this pic is an entrance to our formal living room, so that wall space isn't there.
& I also have a 9mo old...which means, do we skimp out and buy cheap stuff for now? the floor here is pergo.
TIA!

ah, can't see the entrance to LR in pic. ok. hmm.... then i would divide the room into 2 designated focal areas.
- 2 club chairs and small area rug in front of FP with an end table inbtwn, panels on windows, art on wall across from windows
- couch, area rug and EC where current furniture exists with art on wall behind couch
with this configuration you have the needed seating available (reconfigured) to accommodate additional guests for tv viewing but room (when tv viewing is not being utilized) has its definitive areas.

you are my hero I actually think this idea would work...and I do like the idea of spliting the room into two seperate areas.

Re: decorating advice (w/pic)
another thought.
i assume that there is another entryway to the LR. having to walk through the den to gain entry to the LR, is IMO odd and awkward.
have you considered closing the den entryway?

its a center hall colonial, so yes, the entry to the FLR is also near the front door. HUM...closing that wall ...we could, but I'm *thinking* w/the baby we're going to leave the FLR unfurnished for now...so he can play in there (would that be crazy?)...so access to that room would be best thru both the den & front...its definitely possible though. Thanks so much for the idea, I hadn't thought of that!

Exactly! That FP area is gorgeous, two club chairs there would be perfect.

Re: decorating advice (w/pic)
You can do a sectional - I would do an L shape one where the smaller part is against the part that separates the kitchen from the den. I happen to like darker colors or neutrals that won't show stains on couches, like a brown or rust color (that is what we have but it's not a sectional) and our walls are a greenish color and it looks fine. I would do an area rug but not a must. I personally like an entertainment center but in this room (again the pic is skewed like you said) but it looks like the entertainment center overpowers the room.
Also if you want, you can put a chaise or some sort of armchair/ottoman or chaise back by the fireplace (if there's room) with a table and lamp for reading. Or if you have kids you can use that for toy storage.
If you don't have an eat in kitchen I even wonder if you would put in a small dining room set and then put the couch (can still do a sectional) down further, but again the length of the room is hard to judge so maybe you wouldn't have that much room.
It just looks like there's alot of dead space in that pic past the entertainment center and sofa, that you can utilize.
Would love to see what you end up doing with it, let us know! Mary

Re: decorating advice (w/pic)
I think the EC is too big for the room as well. I would consider a flat screen hung on the wall with a cabinet beneath, with the sectional in front, open toward the fireplace. Put a couch table behind the sectional end that would face you as you walk in the room.
Perhaps create a conversational area by the fireplace, two chairs and an table or two love seats and an table.
Or, this is a little more extreme but can be done...remove the large mantel around the fireplace and put a smaller one in and hang a flat screen on the wall above the fireplace. The sectional will now be in front of the fireplace and the conversational area would be toward the front of the room. This would allow anyone sitting in the conversational area to converse with those in the kitchen area as well as watch TV.

Re: decorating advice (w/pic)
Beautiful room!!!!!!!
I would like to chairs facing the FP. Then I would prob put a large flat screen on the wall with a thin console table beneath. I don't think I would do a sect due to the traffic coming through to the other rooms

Love the sectional, have to have one, please let me know where you purchased it.
LCD on the wall will look great. Minimalist. What is behind the wall, You may be able to hide your equipment in a cabinet or ????????
