can I ask his reasons why? it's making me nervous too! pregnant women can get the shots if there is a shot, right? Pregnant women can get the flu shot, I know, but maybe this vaccine will be different?

I think he just doesn't want me possibly getting the flu and (possibly) preggo. We aren't nervous, just concerned. I don't know if preggo women can get the shot, plus I never got a flu vaccine this year.

Honestly, if I am not pg this month (won't know until next week) and the situation gets any worse I will hold off TTC.
From what I've read on the CDC website (they issued guidelines re: pregnant woman yesterday) the Swine Flu is VERY serious for pregnant woman - for starters, the medications that you can take and that they are giving everyone right now are Category C drugs and, thus you cannot be assured they will not harm the fetus (especially in the 1st trimester) BUT, they are still recommending that pregnant women that contract swine flu be given these meds b/c the alternative is worse - Death. And, apparently they had some examples from the last swine flu out break

I say no. You could get TB from walking through the grocery store, Hepatitis from eating contaminated food. I think this is getting out of hand. Be cautious, but don't stop trying.

I thought about this too, and decided to keep going forward. There are always going to be things that you can catch. So far the swine flu cases in the US have been mild (knock on wood), and it is definitely getting lots of attention by the health dept. to contain and treat it. This year's flu vaccine does not protect against swine flu, but there is medicine to treat it if you contract it.
Swine Flu info from the CDC website
PREGNANT WOMEN
Oseltamivir and zanamivir are "Pregnancy Category C" medications, indicating that no clinical studies have been conducted to assess the safety of these medications for pregnant women. Because of the unknown effects of influenza antiviral drugs on pregnant women and their fetuses, oseltamivir or zanamivir should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the embryo or fetus; the manufacturers' package inserts should be consulted. However, no adverse effects have been reported among women who received oseltamivir or zanamivir during pregnancy or among infants born to women who have received oseltamivir or zanamivir. Pregnancy should not be considered a contraindication to oseltamivir or zanamivir use. Because of its systemic activity, oseltamivir is preferred for treatment of pregnant women. The drug of choice for prophylaxis is less clear. Zanamivir may be preferable because of its limited systemic absorption; however, respiratory complications that may be associated with zanamivir because of its inhaled route of administration need to be considered, especially in women at risk for respiratory problems.

ITA. The swine flu doesn't scare me in the least. I can't control things that are out of my hands so I refuse to stress or worry about what may be.

DH asked me the same too, but I didn't mind. He is an ER doc and has seen some pretty sick people in and out of the hospital due to this flu epidemic.
Just to be on the safe side, I'm going to wait to start TTC again.
good luck

there is always going to be SOMETHING that is out there -- don't live in fear.
i think the media has made this whole outbreak worse and caused so much panic. you could catch just regular influenza, that kills thousands of people EACH YEAR in this country, more likely than swine flu. its just that this is something scaring the crap out of everyone and i think its geting nuts!
i say keep on trying!

One pregnant woman in 1988 died from swine flu (it was not an "outbreak") after going to a "pig fair" in her area. I got this from the CDC website.

Re: DH asked me if we should hold off TTC until this swine flu is controlled...
i was just thinking to myself... thank god i already had my baby and we are home from hospital (who was in the NICU for 3 weeks) i wouldnt be too scared to be pregnant during the swine flu, but i would be worried that my baby was in the hospital for 3 weeks.... (while infected flu patients are around) i would wait til next month if i were u.... esp if u live in an affected county..... whats another month in the scheme of things?

Yes one woman did die in 1988. However, that is not what I was referring to. I was just referring though to the interim guidance they published for practitioners re: pregnant women which stated why they felt that taking the drugs (even when the risk is not known) is safer than the alternative. Even though some of it was a long time ago they did discuss more than just that one woman dying and also there were issues with the pregnancy/baby as well.
The article is here:

Obviously, everyone has their own opinions on this issue and needs to make their own decision based on the available information. I was just giving my reasoning.

Re: DH asked me if we should hold off TTC until this swine flu is controlled...
I heard that they think this swine flu might slow down d/t summer and start up again in the fall. I don't think I will postpone TTC because who knows what will happen .. I'm not getting any younger so I can't wait till who knows when this whole thing will be over..Then on to the next thing..Worrying about the swine flu and having a newborn
