Did anyone deliver in a hospital that didn't do an IV?

I wasn't given a choice and afterward I looked like someone had filled me up with gallons of fluid! Was wondering if it was just that hospital or all of them?

There are a number of reasons for an IV among them are testing positive for group b strep and a c-section, and prolonged labor. I think that they are becoming SOP.

It's my understanding that it is a must. God forbid you have a problem with the L&D you want to be able to get whatever IV meds you need ASAP.

I didn't have any of these but I did have an IV and I just looked so puffy after delivery. The make up post got me thinking b/c that's what I remember hating most about the post pics wasn't the lack of makeup but the swollen puffiness.

I think no matter what they give you an IV to keep you hydrated and in case they need a quick access line, they can give you meds through it, take your blood and do whatever else is necessary.
I know it sucks, but i haven't heard on a hospital that doesnt.

At Stonybrook they place the line for an I.V., I think it is call a hep-lock? It is just putting the needle in with the tube, no fluids are attached. It is NOT mandatory to receive fluids.

St. Charles asked me if I wanted an IV. I denied it the first night I was admitted. I went home in the morning and was back that night. I requested that they do a hep lock in case I needed fluids/ meds quickly.

I delivered at NSUH and this is what they did for me - they said it was just in case they needed to get me anything in a hurry. Otherwise - i was not hooked up to an IV b/f or during HOWEVER, after giving birth I was given pitocin via IV - from what I read and my childbirth class this is pretty standard and necessary - it helps to contract the uterus and to limit bleeding i think - however, i don't think this would cause you to be puffy? At least it didn't make me puffy...HTH!

I never did before, during or after. My DD came too fast I wasen't even admitted when I had her.
It actually was really bad because due to the stress on her from my fast labor my water broke with merconium and luckily I got my act together and got her out fast and safely. Since It happened so quickly they weren't able to mointor her or myself so it could have easily turned into an Emergency Csection and it could have been very bad news.

I would honestly atleast try to get a heplock if possible.

Also you don't need the potocin after birth, most people get it and don't even know but since they never started a line we just did it the old fashioned way.

Same with me, I had an open line and then they did a potocin drip AFTER birth to contract my uterus back.

Its been a while but I thought Winthrop said you needed a bag of fluid before you get an epidural. That was a good enough reason for me.

Stony Brook with the midwives - no hep lock, no I.V.

I avoided the IV with Maddie. One way to do it is to show up really late to the hospitalChat Icon

(Huntington)

With Joseph I had an IV for the antibiotics since I went early. It seemed like I could have avoided it/denied it but they throw around "the health of the baby" and I gave them my arm.

If you request an epi. you need to have IV done too.

If you want an epi they generally will give you IV fluids b.c you have to be hydrated (if you get dehydrated it can cause drops in blood pressure) - if you don't want an epi - they will probably put a line in case they need to give you something in an emergency - but I would think you could refuse the fluids if you don't want an epi.
