Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen
is that the 12 week thing? if so, we refused it both times. I have heard too many stories of false positive results causing nothing but worry until the level II and I didn't want to put myself through that, especially since I would never terminate. It's a personal decision though and one my doctor said was completely up to me.

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen
We didn't do any stardardized testing. No AFP, no neuchal transleucency exam, no CVS, No quad screen, no amnio.
The only thing we had done was teh level 2 ultrasound because we are having a homebirth adn I wanted to make sure the heart was working properly and there was no evidence of gross abnormalitites that would lead me to be more comfortable delivering in teh hospital.
As for the other tests, they are just screening tests with a high rate of false positives. For us, if somethign came back suspicious we would not A) have an amnio or CVS and take the risk of jeapordizing the pregnancy, no matter how low the risk and B) we wouldn't termintate the pregnancy.
I did not want to go my whole pregnancy in fear of "what if". If there was somethign wrong when she is bron we would take care of it then. Our anatomy scan came back perfect so the chances of anything major being wrong and lowered, but there is still always a chance. I would rather not bring more stress to my body, since stress affects teh baby.
Its a personal decision, there is no right or wrong answer. You do what is in your heart!

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen
I refused all testing other than the Level II. I am too much of a worrier and tend to believe the worst case scenario. I had enough to stress about early on in my pregnancy, those screenings and ratios would have made it worse.
My doctor was 100% fine with my decision.

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen
I have my ultrascreen tomorrow. We are having the sono and blood tests done, but that is as far as we are going to go with it. I am definitely not going to have an amnio, that I know for sure. I have heard way too many horror stories about it.

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen
i was on the fence, leaning towards not doing it and then it did it and I got what i pray to be a false positive( 1 in 56for ds). i had a detailed level 2 witha specialist who told me the sonogram improved my chances to 1:460.
so i will never do those "screens" again just a level 2

This is exactly my reason for not doing it. I have had two friends have numbers like that for downs...and at the level 2 there were no markers there at all. They both delivered very healthy babies...but it caused them to worry and worry until the level 2. I coudln't put myself through that!

Yes, we denied all those kids of tests. DH and I both felt that it didn't matter the result, b/c we would never terminate the pregnancy anyway.

BTW I am 35, so I was very pressured to have these tests. I would not have done an early-term amnio, so there was no point IMO to do the other tests.

I didn't have peace of mind until I had the quad screen test results back. I'm a bit of a worrier though.

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen
The only testing we did was the Level 2. In all honesty, It's not like I would terminate if something was wrong and like a PP said, there are high rates of False Positives and I just don't that stress. The baby will be perfect no matter what because it's mine. So I just didn't see the need. But it is a VERY personal decision.

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen
I only got the Level 2, but they did find something wrong! There was a calcium deposit on the baby's heart, and I find out in a week if it went away.

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen
With both pregnancies I did all the tests. First pregnancy everything came back normal. So, I was taken by surprise, this pregnancy when my AFP came back 1 in 95 chance of downs My Level 2 is next week and Im not going to lie, Im sooo much more nervous than excited. I just want good news! I just want a very healthy baby. I don't even want to know the sex. Just want the tech (and my dr after) to comfirm that everything is fine!!! Since i got those results I have been saying "I should have skipped all those tests" and honeslty, wasn't 100% sure we even had a choice!. I am NOT doing the amnio or the CVS. Just can;t bring myself to go through those tests.

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen
I just had my ultrascreen last monday and I was told I'll do the blood again at 16 weeks. If I would of known I could refuse this test I would of cause all I'm doing is worring about the test results. I was told the sono part came back great but I feel the blood tells more. The stress of waiting is killin me!!

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen
although i would NEVER terminate a pregnancy, I did the tests. it was just bloodwork, so I figured why not? They did a finger prick test and a few weeks later did the vial of blood. Thankfully, all is well and my numbers are great.
However, if they weren't, I would leave it at that and hope for the best. There are so many false positives. And who knows even with my 1 in 845 chance of Down's, I could be that 1.

I refused the AFP. I was not sure if I was having an amnio but I didn't have a lot of faith in AFP results. Then I had an amnio anyway.

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen
I didn't with DS. All of my tests came out perfect.
Going forward. I would not do any screening tests again. Only a Level II. I personally don't think there is a need for all of the genetic testing when in reality they are more often than not inaccurate.

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen
We had all the testing done and while it's nerve racking I'm glad we did it. I know sometimes you can get false positives BUT there are times when they can detect a serious problem as well. My BFF just had to terminate her pregnancy at 22 weeks because at her Level II they discovered the baby had only 1 kidney and that one kidney was cystic and damaged and not functioning. She had no amniotic fluid therefore the lungs would not be able to develop as well. Turns out she had something caused Potter's Syndrome and had she not had the Level II she would never have known there was a serious problem and she would have delivered a baby that would have died within minutes of his/her birth.
For myself I would always have all the testing done but now after seeing what my friend had to go through I am 100% confident in my decision to have any and all testing done. While there is error in the tests I still think they are test worth having but that's just my opinion.
Just as a note.............I know everyone says they would never terminate a pregnancy BUT you never know. In the case of my friend she saw many specialists and had many opinions before making the choice. Every doctor told her the baby had LESS than a 1% chance of survival so she had no other choice. It was terminate the pregnancy which is awful OR go full term only to hold your baby for moments and watch it die in your arms.

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen
If these are the tests at 12 weeks then Yes, we refused them all. First, I would not terminate the pregnancy under any circumstances. Second, since we are having twins I thought the hormone levels would probably be really high and scare us... make us think something was wrong... etc... so why do that to myself? Besides, the thought of Amnio and/or CVS scared as a follow up to questionable blood tests scared me because the risk of miscarriage is very slightly increased. So, we did not have any of those tests and my doctor was 100% fine with it. I figure we'll get all the info we need at our sonograms.
