Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen

I have a question for the ladies who said there are so many false positives with the 1st trimester screening. From my research, I see that the false positive percentage is only 5%, does anyone have any other info to share on this?

TIA Chat Icon

last pregnancy, I only did the AFP and level II but I was thinking of doing the 1st trimester screening this time

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen

I will be doing the first part of my ultrascreen in 2 weeks & honestly I didn't think of NOT doing it. DH & I know that we will not terminate but I still would like to know what is going on with the baby, even if we do get a false positive.

I'm thinking I will most likely do the blood tests but will not do the amnio (even though I am 40+) ... still not sure.

Going for the results of the NT tonight, so maybe I'll see how that goes and how I feel about it all ... unfortunately, DH can't make the appt so I'm a little Chat Icon

We did all of the tests they could give me. I wanted to be prepared if there was something wrong with her. Just in case I would need certain things at home for her when we got home etc. I would want to know everything I could before she arrived.

And if something was very very wrong, then more decisions would have to be made.

I was told the same percentage. I have heard the 1 in say 80 sort of results are accurate.

False positives is a bad way to say it. The ratios can be scary. If for your age, a "normal" result is 1:5000, and you hear that your results aer 1:300, that is worrysome. It still means that there is one chance in 300 that there is an issue, but there are 299 chances in that same 300 that there are not. Many times, when the ratio is smaller, there turns out to be no issues, and it is just result of a formula that is used to determine risk. (I hope I explained that right....it sounded good in my head). So the result is not 100% just by the way it is created.

Just as a note.............I know everyone says they would never terminate a pregnancy BUT you never know. In the case of my friend she saw many specialists and had many opinions before making the choice. Every doctor told her the baby had LESS than a 1% chance of survival so she had no other choice. It was terminate the pregnancy which is awful OR go full term only to hold your baby for moments and watch it die in your arms.

This isn't true. I DO know I'd never terminate..it is not an option for me. I think your friend had a really awful situation to go through and I would NEVER judge her for it..she did what was right for her....but for me, I would opt to go full term or for however long the baby lived for and let god take over when I delivered. I know that isn't the right decision for everyone and I respect that, but there really are people who would never ever terminate.

it's a very personal decision. i know that if i had discovered something at my 12 week or 20 week sono that made the doctors 100% positive that the baby would not live past birth, i would most likely terminate at that point because i would not want to go through an entire pregnancy knowing that i would not have a child to take home with me at the end. for me, there was no other option but to have all the available tests and screenings.

i also think it is helpful in a lot of cases to know of something is "wrong" beforehand, because even if you would never terminate, you can be better prepared.

I do agree about being prepared...I did consider doing the 12 week for those reasons alone, but decided against it.

ALSO...they said that most insurances won't cover it if you're under 35?? Is that true? they told me it would prob be $400 or so out of pocket to have it done....

While I don't have actual percentages in front of me, I could go and research it, think about it this way.

These "screening tests" are statistically based. A LOT if women, who are not high risk refuse these tests, you can see this on this thread. Therefor their numbers don't even play into the statistical pool.

So basically the numbers are being determined by women that choose to have the test, high risk with some that are no risk. It is not an accurate pool representation of the populations.

Also they are just that, "Screening tests" they are just based on numbers, which aren't even a good representation of the population.

If you are familiar with statistics you would see that if you don't use a proper sampling of the population the numbers are thrown off!

Hope this makes sense!

Re: Did anyone refuse the Quad Screen

Thanks for all of the responses.

We choose to have the Level I, just the sono, not the bloodwork and everything was fine.

Now my dr gave me the slip for the Quad Screen (I am 16 weeks) and didnt know if I should have it done.

My instinct is no, but I will take a few more days to decide.

Thanks a lot,

when you say Quad screen, do you mean the AFP blood test

If so, if you had the 1st trimester screening, I do not think the AFP test is necessary. Chat Icon

I don't think this one thread is representative of the general pop refusing this test and only high risk and some others choosing to have it. I know from working in the field it is a standard test that most moms do get. I know my OB (regular not high risk) said that over 95% of his patients in their group get the test. They are a columbia presbyterian group. I do think more people who use midwives tend not to get some of the extra standard testing so that might effect some perspective.

The risk of a false positive is actually pretty low - like 3-5% and it is even lower depending on the week it is done.

Whether you get the test or not is really a very personal decision and one each person can only make for themselves - many get the test - NOT with the thought of aborting but there are many conditions where the baby might need immediate care at birth and that can be a huge shock to some parents who didn't have some of the testing to find when they deliver rather than being prepared to have the best care available for their babies. Depending on the condition the baby might need significant care - for a parent who refuses the tests then delivers at a hospital with a lower level NICU they might be very upset or shocked when their child then has to be emergency transfered to another hospital who can care for the child and they are left behind at the hospital they delivered at- rather than having the choice if the condition is known to go somewhere where the baby can get immediate proper care in the same hospital.

i never heard that, although i suppose it depends on your insurance plan. i only had to pay my co-pay for each of the sonos and screening tests.

this is a good point. i actually never knew i could refuse any of the tests until some women on here mentioned that they planned on doing so. i am wondering if other mothers like me were not aware of that fact.
