Nice that you say no harm done after we've had tons of mother here complain how upset they were to be away from their children - guess thier feelings don't matter to you.
It's one thing to be upset to be away from your child - but I wonder how upset a mom would be if their newborn contracted H1N1?
It's a blanket policy so that hospitals can protect themselves and all their patients. Better safe than sorry. If you don't like it, do what other posters did and find a hospital with a policy that suits your needs.

Re: Did you know- due to the swine, no children visitors allowed in maternity (hospital)?
I had my twins on 11/5 at Winthrop and DS was allowed to visit -- but the week after when my friend had her DD they changed it and no visitors under 18.
Also, the NICU which usually allows parents and grandparents only allowed parents when DS and DD were there.

I'm so glad I'm due in July!! I can't imagine not seeing DD for 2 or 3 days and then bringing home a new person all of a sudden.

I'm not pg, but if I was I'd be SO GLAD this rule was in place, even though it would be incredibly hard to not see my kids for 3 or 4 days.
The worst is when you share a room and your roommate has an endless stream of visitors including lots of runny nosed coughing children (and most children are runny nosed and/or coughing to some degree right now during the winter).

Re: Did you know- due to the swine, no children visitors allowed in maternity (hospital)?
Holy crap! I said friends, not family! I had random people show up at the hospital that were friends of my husband w/my first son. It was a bit akward for me to be like, Hey...I don't know you but sure..hold my son who was born less than 24h ago?!
Anyway..we are all entitled to our own opinion. B/C I have my own you are going to be rude? This board is here for support...I don't knock anyone..even when I think they are nuts for doing what they are doing.
Get over myself??! Seriously?? Maybe if my child didn't get sick the first 2 weeks of life, and had to spend 3 days in the hospital getting a spinal tap b/c he had a cold..and I wasn't having a baby in the height of flu season..then maybe I wouldn't be so neurotic about it. That was a great way to spend my first 2 weeks as a new mom. Watching my little one have a spinal tap and going home alone.
You should understand that not everyone is going to agree with you and be more political about it.

Re: Did you know- due to the swine, no children visitors allowed in maternity (hospital)?
I don't think I would have had such a strong opinion before I delivered.....
After delivering (@ St. Charles) My roommate tells me that she her kids and husband had visited earlier, but her son was very sick, so they would not be coming later.
Thinking to myself, great, you just had you sick kid all over the room for 2 hours today, an hour before I came in..... The next day I overheard her telling the nurse she wanted to stay longer because her son was diagnosed with H1N1.
I'm sorry but my newborn doesn't need to be exposed to germs like that cause people are not thinking, or just being selfish!

Re: Did you know- due to the swine, no children visitors allowed in maternity (hospital)?
I would be really upset if I couldn't see my daughter when I delivered my second. Luckily, the hospital I'm delivering at does not have this policy (I called yesterday and checked.) My newborn will be with me the whole time, so Im not sure how visitors visiting other patients would affect me/my baby. If my roommate had sick visitors, I would raise it and ask the nurses that no sick visitors be allowed in my room, but even then, it's not like they would be near my baby, touching my baby, etc. Worst case scenario, Id spring for the private room, which I really dont want to do because its $$$, but if it was for health reasons, Id do it.

All these ruls are silly, an adult can just as easily walk in with the flu or N1H1 virus
right but adults understand basic rules- hand washing, covering mouth when coughing/sneezing, etc.- kids, not so much.
honestly it was super duper tough- we just had DS at Good Sam and DD had to stay with DH while I toughed it out pretty much solo b/c everyone was pretty busy- i had a few visitors- but for the most part, it was just me and Joel- and you know, although I totally missed DD it was really, really nice to just have this nice bonding time with DS and just heal and get well too!
Do you know how many women don't wash their hands after using the bathroom? I believe it is about 35%
besides, adults can be carriers or ill and just not know it yet
forgive me if I'm wrong here- but I think H1N1 is spread by getting coughed directly on or sneezed directly on- as far as I know- MOST people- especially when around an infant or in a hospital environment cover their mouths and wash their hands (even if they don't wash their hands after urinating which isn't- to my knowledge- how H1N1 is spread)....
all of us with young children- school-age Toddler's especially- know that they aren't exactly capable of covering their mouths all the time. Also, we know that nursery schools especially are hot-beds of germs- heck, Maddie has had a cough and runny nose for over a month now.
While it was incredibly difficult to be away from DD for 4 days (I just had a c/s 2 weeks ago) if the policy means even 1 kid doesn't get sick- it is worth it.

Re: Did you know- due to the swine, no children visitors allowed in maternity (hospital)?
I guess I am the odd man out, it wouldn't bother me one bit. When I had DD (#2) DS only came to visit once and that was because my mom brought him and my SIL was there to take him to her house. It wouldn't have been a big deal to me if he didn't come. It was hard on him and it as nice having the one on one time with my DD because I haven't had that since I left the hospital 2.5 years ago.

my DS will only be 19 months old, i'm very upset I won't be able to see him for 5 days. He had his swine flu shot, what was the purpose of getting him that shot then when I bring my baby home, baby will be exposed to my DS anyway. this rule doesn't make sense. and now when mommy comes home after 5 days of DS not seeing me, It will be the first time he is meeting the baby.

Please don't take it the wrong way, but they are concerned about the other babies in the hospital too, not just your new little one, so if your DS was sick, and came to the hospital, the other babies are at risk too.
I am not pregnant, and of course I would be sad, but I would personally use this time to bond with my new baby
ETA-It also keeps your older DC out of a germy hospital as well

It's a blanket policy so that hospitals can protect themselves and all their patients. Better safe than sorry. If you don't like it, do what other posters did and find a hospital with a policy that suits your needs.
That's the thing - it's not a blanket policy. It ONLY applies to kids and honestly, I don't see the logic. My DS gets sick once a year. Meanwhile all the adults I know are CONSTANTLY sick! And, I'm sorry but I don't buy that whole adults know what to do - I was in the OB OFFICE today - with all pregnant woman 9 mos plus and there were three woman in there hacking away that didn't cover their mouths ONCE - I was appalled but, DH who was with me says this is what happens at work, on the train etc. - so NO adults do not know better!
Anyway, I am deliving in a few weeks and am very sad that my 2 yr old can't come when I know keeping him away isn't protecting anyone and that all the others that will come see me are actually MORE of a threat.
That said, I wish they would limit everyone then if they REALLY want to accomplish somethig b/c if I can't get a private room my baby will be exposed to all the germs of the ADULT visitors in my room who I can guarantee will not all be washing their hands and covering their mouths!

This is a good point- my father was recently hospitalized, and my mother was adamant that I not bring my DD visit him.

Re: Did you know- due to the swine, no children visitors allowed in maternity (hospital)?
I did hear that ~ my girlfriend is having her 3rd baby in Jan and she was upset that her other two children would not be able to go to the hospital to see there new brother or sister. (she is going to St. Charles, Port Jeff) I think it is a good policy (it has been said that children are the ones spreading the h1n1) St Charles is not allowing anyone under 18 ~ It is good for the new babies although I know it would be hard for a mother to be away from her children. I loved being in St Charles when I had my son and having the babies in the nursery during visiting hours.

Re: Did you know- due to the swine, no children visitors allowed in maternity (hospital)?
Well I happen to like the policy BUT I think it should include ANYONE who has a cough, a runny nose or is sick not just children.
I delivered my second at Columbia Presbyterian she came 12 days before my scheduled section day so I wasn't prepared to say goodbye to DD or anything. DD had a runny nose and cough on and off (that was later diagnosed as allergies) but at the time we thought she might have a virus (she had it on and off for 3 months). So she was kept away from me. Was it horrible YES - I had never been more than 1 night at a time away from her but was I glad that she was away from the baby yes, b.c I didn't need my days old infant to get a fever and need a spinal tap. Their policy was you were not allowed upstairs if you had a runny nose, cough, fever or any sign of illness.
I think the policy is good - it might be upsetting to some - but the way to look at it is how would you feel if your infant got a fever/sick from your roommates visitors and then they needed a spinal tap. You would be upset that the hospital let that person in.
