I personally think its a great policy!! but then again- I love St Charles policy where the babies are in the nursery during visiting hours!Chat Icon

ITA and I think this is the policy where I am delivering in Florida. Call me insensitive, but I don't care about other people's feelings when it means the safety and well-being of my newborn DD. If I had an older child, I would understand. No mommy should have to worry about her baby having a spinal tap the first few weeks of life!

Yes, I just found this out. I cried for about 2 hours after I heard. I don't know how Im going to make it 2 days without my DD. While I completely understand, I would rather my DD in the room with us then other visitors. They should just not allow visitors at all.

An hospital is a place of germs. All Dr will tell you that.

They really do not encourage young children to come for visit and I understand.

This is not an hotel suite. It is sad not to see your child? YES! But we are protecting both NBs and young kids visiting too.

They are a lot of sick people in hospitals. I don't think it's bad to protect those in the hospital and those visiting.

to be honest, while it upsets me that ds, who is only 14 months old and not in play groups or daycare (so there is no exposure to get h1n1 to contract to a baby) i actually think it may be better for us atleast... only because since he is rarely away from me i think bringing him in for a short period of time may actually make the seperation worse....

however i am already having issues with older people in my family not accepting the fact that i do not want their germy hands and faces all over ds so i actually wish they had limited them all....

Re: Did you know- due to the swine, no children visitors allowed in maternity (hospital)?

Yeah, I think this is a good policy. Not for nothing, but we all look at it from the point of view that we're responsible for our kids when they're sick and responsible enough to keep our other DC home if they're sick, but I can tell you, many, many parents are NOT responsible enough to do the right thing. Just as any teacher how many kids end up at school that should never have left the house, subsequently getting other children sick?
So it's the irresponsible people that concern me, and I feel there are far too many of them in this world that I wouldn't want to risk it. So while I might miss Ava terribly during that time, it's just a few days and she'll be fine and so will I.

This is how it was here when I gave birth to DS. I understood the policy, but it was soooo hard to be away from DD that long (especially with raging hormones kicking in). I couldn't wait to get home and hug her.

I cried too Chat Icon I can't imagine not seeing DS for that long but then again he stays at his grandparents overnight so maybe I'll try to convince myself it's like that. I just hate that he will have to meet his brother when I bring him home...I wanted it to be a smoother transition. I am goign to ask my doctor if she will allow me to see him in the lobby without the baby...I need some hugs.

I was just at my ob's office the other day and they have a big sign up that stony brook has that rule now so no one will be surprised. I think it's posted everywhere because i'm guessing they got alot of complaints.

I hope they lift it by july because i dont think i can go 2-3 days without my girls!

I found out about this just the other day. I guess it makes sense. I hope the swine flu epidemic is past its prime when I go in to have DC#2 in June. I really can't imagine not seeing Ryleigh for 3 days! Chat Icon

Re: Did you know- due to the swine, no children visitors allowed in maternity (hospital)?

Abby was a NICU baby. NO children under 18 were allowed to see her at all. Children of school age are MANY times more likely to tranmit illnesses and diseases to adults and other children whose immune systems are not fully developed.

As for maternity floors, I wholeheartedly agree that at this time, children should wait at home until they come to the hospital. I was fortunate to have had a private room - regardless of whether or not Abby ever was in there with me (she wasn't). HOWEVER there are rooms with 2, 3 and 4 people in them with each patient allowed 4 visitors in addition to the parents at a time. So there is a possibility that during visiting hours ONE baby can be exposed to the germs and illnesses of up to 24 people at one time. During flu season? Seriously? Has anyone ever had a child with respiratory issues? Nebulizers? It is G-d awful and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

If when my second child comes (G-d willing I get PG as soon as humanly possible) it is during flu season, or if there are restrictions as to who (or how many people) can come to see him/her/me in the hospital, so be it. I will be damned if some person brings their kid with the flu to the hospital for a photo-op bedside and infects my infant due to their selfishness. Kids are resilient - they will deal with the disappointment better than you think. Sure it would break my heart to not see Abby for days, but it is what it is and I could never and would never put another person's infant at risk. It is the same reason why I keep Abby home for an entire week when she has a cough and green mucus. I just could not live with myself if I got anothe person's kid sick.

Im rather passionate about this. I make no apologies.

May everyone be healthy, warm and safe this holiday season.

Re: Did you know- due to the swine, no children visitors allowed in maternity (hospital)?

I wound up going into the hospital on bedrest & had to stay there a month. This was back in late May/early June. NSUH Manhasset was not allowing children under 18 into the hospital, so I could not see my 3 year old daughter. You can only imagine how hard it was-for both of us. It wasn't just a few days..it was a month. The Dr's were so kind & felt so bad for me that they arranged for my DD to come visit once a week in a special room in Pediatrics. It was a huge deal, they needed her vaccinactionrecords, had to take her temperature, etc.. so we could see each other for an hour.
As horrible as it was to only see my DD 4 times in a month, I knew it was for the safety of everyone, both in and out of the hospital. There was a baby in the NICU (isolated of course) who contracted swine flu, as well as a pregnant mom on my floor (also isolated from the other patients).
I know it's SO incredibly hard on you & your kids not to see each other for a few days, but it really is for the best, and our little one surely handle it much better than we do.Chat Icon

It upsets me, but I know it's to protect both the patients and the visitors.

I'd rather DD not be in the hospital anyway. As a PP said, it's a place of germs.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Well said... ds was also born and straight into the ICU for 10 days, pneumonia, partial lung collapse, spinal tap, xrays... swine flu broke out while he was in there in April and the nicu then restricted visiting to only parents- no grandparents- luckily they had seen ds on the first 2 days before that started... nicu is only 1 parent & 1 parent/grandparent. bil was 26 and couldnt see him.

i would have been very happy for that restriction. children spread it more. They touch/eat the same toys. ds daycare recently had a HUGE outbreak of flu/h1n1 cases. if kids are there and they cough on something the germs can be there for HOURS. so if you dont have you baby out while there are visitors - visiting time ends at 8 and they bring your baby back in... the germs are still there. seriously, after seeing my son struggle to breath. to have to visit him in the nicu and hand him back to the nurses after a short timed visit so he could get his rest... the hospital is trying to protect our babies, let them.Chat Icon

NSUH Manhasset is doing the same. Also the only visitors allowed in the NICU were parents and grandparents.

At Winthrop, when my DS was in the NICU last month, only parents were allowed in. Grandparents were not allowed in.

This was so upsetting to me when I found out. DS and I can't go a few hours w/out being with each other. I understand the need for the policy, but I hate it. I'm just glad DS will be home with my parents and I won't worry about him at least. Dunno how he'll react when he gets to see mama again and I'm holidng another baby. Chat Icon

a bit off topic but in Oct. when my girls were in the NICU, their NURSE WAS SICK. And I heard her for 2 days telling the other nurses how sick she was!! Yes she washed her hands constantly but she was still a coughing, sneezing mess ...Makes no sense to me these rules.

I guess I do understand but I had a hard enough time saying good bye to my son at the end of the day when I was there w/ my C/S. I dont know how I could have gone 5 days w/o seeing him....I would be a wreck. It also took weeks for him to get over me leaving him for that amount of time.

But I do understand and agree safety is first for the NB's.
