Dining room table & area rug size question

When we have company for dinner, we put the leaf in our dining room table and add in the extra chairs. When buying an area rug, should I get the size for how the table is normally everyday or bigger to accommodate when we have the leaf/extra chairs?

I have mine set for what we have on a daily basis. When I put the leaf in my table the table is onto the next room and chairs are not on the rug.

We rarely have that many people at the house so I wasn't going to design for the 1x a year it happens.
