Yay for us.
We have one. It warms up the room. I hate wood floors, too sterile for me.
It's a 9 x 12 so people can move their chairs without falling off the rug, and there are no issues with moving the chairs on the carpet.

we have a bamboo area rug under our table. i love it b/c it helps to "set" the space (our DR and LR are in one bigger room)...and bamboo = easy to clean!! no stains!! wine glass fell? no problem!
i am not sure if i would feel the same if i had an actual rug under the table -- too annoying to maintain

Same for us -- it helps define our rooms better by putting a rug under the DR table and near the sofas in our LR ---

I have an area rug under my formal dining room table -- it is a traditional pattern with darker, richer colors. I agree that it sort of "grounds" the room and I think it makes the dining room have a more formal, traditional look (which is obviously not for everyone!).

Yay! We have one.
I would get one big enough that even when the chairs are fully pulled out, they are still on the rug.

I agree - so we had no rug in our last house. It was a small room.
But this house looked naked without one (much larger room). Now we have one.

Nay, too much trouble cleaning, esp. if there are little children and pets in the house. Food gets all over the rug and it becomes a real hair/dust magnet.
