Discipline Question - Need Help
DS is 16 months and has decided to enter his Terrible Twos early. He has tantrums if he doesn't get what he wants (which I ignore, and then he stops) but he has also become a big hitter, which bothers me. If he doesn't get what he wants, he'll hit the closest thing - chair, toy, Mommy... Or if he has something in his hand he'll throw it. Sometimes I can tell he hits because he's frustrated I'm not understanding what he's trying to communicate. (He doesn't have many words but I can tell he understands.) I guess I'm just looking for ideas in how to handle this. When I say "no hitting" it doesn't seem to do anything. If I ignore him and walk away he'll cry, run to me, I'll pick him up saying, "Are you sorry? No hitting Mommy. Give hugs." and he hugs me. But then he'll look up, smile, and lightly start hitting my shoulder. I don't get it... Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? What does everyone else do?

Re: Discipline Question - Need Help
DS is 18 months and we've been dealing with these tantrums too Unfortunately "no" doesn't work for us and eggs him on even more. So what I've learned to do is ignore him or redirect his attention. Ignoring him is MUCH easier at home. I do get a little embarrassed when we're out in public. And yes I do get dirty looks because people think I can't control my child...obviously they don't have children or just forget what it's like. I just smile at them
He does still throw tantrums but they're shorter and not as often. I hope this helps...good luck!!!
Also, when he throw tantrums try not to stress out...happy thoughts!
