Re: Discussion....Breast feeding at your desk in the office
Absolutely no excuse for doing it AT her desk! She should at least retreat to the break room or something.

Re: Discussion....Breast feeding at your desk in the office
Would you all eat in a bathroom? I highly doubt it- therefore why should her DC????
I think an empty office or break room would be more appropriate HOWEVER if her only options are toliet or at her desk- well.... Then screw everyone who feels uncomfortable and then thats where she is going to do it! There is no need she should feel she should feed her child in a bathroom!
Some babies will NOT take to a bottle- the kid needs to eat!
Im just not sure why her child is allowed in the office during the day....??

At first I though it was extremely inapproiate for her to be doing that at her desk, but I do see your point. I'm confused also on why the child is at the office in the first place?

Re: Discussion....Breast feeding at your desk in the office
Inappropriate.
BUT...before telling her not to BF at her desk, your boss should have had other arrangements lined up for her to pump or nurse. NOT a bathroom.
juney: Re: Nipple confusion: Some babies will stop nursing if they are introduced to a bottle nipple before they have properly learned to latch to a breast nipple. Bottle nipples are way easier for babies so when put back on the breast, they don't want to work as hard to get milk so they stop nursing b/c they prefer the bottle. As you can imagine, this would be devastating for a mom who really wants to nurse.
Although it CAN happen later on... usually by 4 months of age (like this baby is) they've got the hang of it so it shouldn't be an issue.
There's your nipple lesson for the day Juney.

I have to say, I get very frustrated at times. There is SO MUCH pressure for a woman to breastfeed. In fact, a report from the government likened not breastfeeding to smoking while pregnant (not that I agree with this at all).
BUT no one wants women nursing in public and people aren't willing to make accomodations. So what is a woman to do? Severeal women I know gave up breastfeeeding because at work there was no place to pump but the bathroom. It gets so frustrating at times.
Well said!
I think the bigger issue is why is her husband and child coming to work with her? If the baby for some reason won't take the bottle at all and she has to nurse than she should have already made arrangements with the boss to feed him simply because I don't think she can be doing her job 100% if she is busy nursing her child. I'm all for breastfeeding but if it's consuming her time at work then what is she getting paid to do?

I guess I'm ignorant when it comes to BF but what do teachers do who are nursing moms that can't bring their babies to work?

They pump their milk and then someone else feeds the baby with a bottle.

I want to add I would be more upset that she wasn't doing her job. If she has to stop to BF every couple of hours for 20 to 30 minutes a pop, how much work is she really doing?

The problem would then be that the baby could refuse to BF anymore since it is much easier to get milk from a bottle than a boob. Or the baby could be like my little stinker and refuse to take a bottle.

Ok... So then they baby would have to eat from the bottle all the time and the mother would have to pump?
So as long as the mother is pumping and the baby is taking the bottle then it's ok right?

I can't believe she still works there. that is such BS.
Okay, maybe I'm missing some other thing that the same woman did at the office, but I don't think that breastfeeding at your desk would be reason enough to fire someone.
Reason to call them into the boss' office and work out other arrangements, definately.
In all honestly I have heard of people bringing babies up to jobs so that they can eat. My sister's babysitter did that with her daughter for a few months, because after being BF exclusively while my sister was on maternity leave for 4 months, she completely refused the bottle. The babysitter had to feed my niece with a syringe on days that she couldn't bring her to my sister's job.
Is this woman letting it all hang out while she nurses the baby, or is she covering up with a blanket. You can BF in public very discreetly.
Ultimately I think that the bosses need to help her find another situation. An empty office, somewhere more secluded to go, but I don't think that it is grounds for termination. If she's letting it all hang out and flaunting it, then that's another story. I think it all depends on how it's being done.

One problem with this is that it's easy to lose your milk supply if you are only pumping and the baby doesn't BF directly often enough.

I agree... I don't think it is grounds to fire someone either...
BUT in this case... she was told not to breast feed at her desk once and then she completely ignored that direction from the boss and did it again on i believe saturday (as stated in the post) and that is why I think she can be held accountable at this point b/c she is directly going against orders from her boss.
Rather than saying "ok, i can't feed at my desk- can we set up another room or make a compromise??" she just did what she wanted to anyway.

The baby could do both actually. Most working Moms who pump will BF when they are home with their child. Some do only pump for bottles though too.

Re: Discussion....Breast feeding at your desk in the office
She works part time. Mon, tues, Thur, Fri 6p - 10p and Sat 10am - 5pm
She was bringing the baby to the office during the week but it was becoming a distraction (not to mention we all signed employee agreements that said we are not allowed to bring children to the work place while we are working unless prior arrangements were made) Prior arrangements were never made. She just brought the baby in.
She was spoken too about the baby and DH coming into the office. I dont know what was fully discussed but my boss assured me it was handled and an agreement was made.
I guess she figures no one is around on Saturdays and it's ok to bring the baby in and do what she needs to do at her desk as a mother and no one is going to say anything.
I am just curious how my boss is going to handle this. Especially after the email I sent him.

Absolutely. and she was also told not to do something else and she is (she was told to stay out of any bookings and stick with CS only. Well she is continuing to do bookings when she was told more then once to not do bookings at all). My boss told me she's making his job very difficult.

I agree with the posters who said she should be allowed to BF discretely at work.
Here's some info on legislation covering nursing at work In FL businesses are encouraged to allow mothers to nurse in the workplace.

Re: Discussion....Breast feeding at your desk in the office
Thanks for posting this. It's a great article.
I dont think my office ever would think to a mother friendly room because she is the first and only person to have an infant. Everyone I work with is much older and their kids are all grown or much younger and dont have any kids.
