I'm sorry, but I completely disagree with the posters that think the company should provide a private room for her to breastfeed-I have a very close friend at work whose daughter is 6.5 months old, and she takes her lunch hour to drive to daycare to feed her baby-the office is no place for a baby, the desks aren't clean, there is no privacy and it's a huge distraction. When smokers go outside to smoke-they take thier distraction OUTSIDE. They aren't smoking at thier desks, causing a distraction within the office. She needs to make other arrangements to feed her child, she's a part time employee, she needs to rework the babies feeding schedule, to be more condusive to her working, she knew she was going to be returning to work at some point, it's not the companies responsibility to work out her BFing her child.
Are you seriously comparing breastfeeding in an office to SMOKING in an office?? Last time I checked, breastfeeding around other people did not cause cancer.
No, I'm not, other posters said that since smokers get to take thier breaks to smoke, women breastfeeding should get extra time to breast feed, and while I don't think anyone should get any extra time at all-the smokers are going outside, they aren't doing it in plain site. I used it ias an example of how lop-sided the argument was. I think the two are not even remotely comparable.

Ah... ok I understand what you are saying. I still don't think the two can be compared though.

I'm assuming you don't have any children, since you clearly don't understand how BFing works. You can't just "re-work" how you are lactating. There's not an on/off switch. A mother's body begins the let down process in anticipation of her child needing nourishment, based on how the baby's been feeding in the past. She's been on this schedule for 6.5 months. She can't just say "Oh, I am at work now, I'll hold it in."
Secondly, in most states BY LAW you have to provide nursing mothers the ability to pump milk when needed, and in some states businesses are encouraged to allow mothers to nurse their child at the job site.
you can absolute rework your child's eating schedule, it's not like she didn't know she'd be going back to work, other mom's that breastfeed have to get thier child onto a schedule because their husbands can't bring the baby to and from thier job, know what I mean?

I was comparing the time away from work, and the distraction to other workers, not the acts themselves-sorry if I led anyone otherwise...

actually it is not always that easy. BF is not a black & white thing. Some children have different needs & some women's bodies fall into different patterns. I think to make any generalizations about it is not fair. For example, one woman I worked with was indeed able to easily change her child's feeding schedule when her weekly meeting changed time to accomodate the west coast, however another woman I worked with was not able to pump effectively before would find that she "leaked" during the meeting. (just as an example.)

the baby was being fed with a bottle then, while they were working? that's not what this women is doing-I don't think pumping and actually having your husband sit next to your desk while you breast feed is the same kind of distraction to others.

Of course everything has a gray area, but surely some of the owness has to be on this mother to figure out a way to work effectively and within company policy of not having the baby at the office, and still be able to breast feed her child. It can't all be up to the company to resolve, the Mom has to work it out also.

Yes, but you stated that this woman should re-work her feeding schedule around work and my point is that it's not that easy, and secondly, in the state she works in, nursing on the jobsite is encouraged by law, so she did nothing wrong legally. She did the wrong thing by not adhearing to what was agreed upon by her employer, but in her defense it doesn't seem that they provided her another solution.

It can't all be up to the company to resolve, the Mom has to work it out also. The company is legally required to offer a non-bathroom facility for this woman to feed her child. If they are not doing that it is NOT her responsibility to do it for them. Sorry but I disagree. If the company had offered her an alternative & she chose to still feed at her desk, then yes I would agree with you.
I think the company has to make more of an effort rather than tell her "you can't do that."

What you're also missing is that when a smoker takes a smoke break, he/she isn't working. Big impact on the bottom line. HOWEVER, if a company makes the appropriate accomodations for a "pumping" mother, there is simply NO disruption from work, and the mother is in no way getting extra benefits from work. I pumped for 6 months at my desk, door closed, and was able to work during each pumping session.
If we as a country are going to decide that breastfeeding is the best way to go, the most nutritional and effective at reducing illness in young children, then we as a country had better be prepared to anticipate how we are going to accomodate it.

ITA. It can't just be on paper; it has to be in practice as well.

Ummm, Sorry, but the BABY and her HUSBAND don't belong in the office at all on a regular basis !! - If he brings the baby in to visit for 10 minutes here or there once in a while that's one thing, But if you're at work, you're there to work, not take care of your kid - How many times a day is she taking the time to feed this baby?? At her desk or not, the fact that kid and her husband are there is completely inappropriate.....and her boss should absolulely NOT accomodate her child's feeding schedule, it is her responsibility to pump so that the baby can be fed a bottle by whomever the caregiver is while she is at the office ........ What is she the only women in the office who's ever had a baby ?? I have never heard of such a thing !!

I'm not saying the child's feeding schedule should be changed, I'm saying the mother should take responsibility for the fact that she wants the child breast fed, but she is also at work - You can't have both, if you're at the office, you're at the office - You're not a SAHM ........So, you pump and let your husband (or whoever is caring for the baby while you're AT WORK) feed him/her - A baby does not belong at the office -

So lets say she pumped a bottle of milk and her daughter doest take it. Whats you next solution? Some babies will not take bottles if they have the breast. Heck some bottlefed babies dont even take other brand bottles. My DS will only take one particular brand. The company should definitly accomidate her.
