If we as a country are going to decide that breastfeeding is the best way to go, the most nutritional and effective at reducing illness in young children, then we as a country had better be prepared to anticipate how we are going to accomodate it.

For the record I BF at my desk everyday, if I didn't have this luxury it would be a very sad day for both me and my little girl

Ummm, Sorry, but the BABY and her HUSBAND don't belong in the office at all on a regular basis !! - If he brings the baby in to visit for 10 minutes here or there once in a while that's one thing, But if you're at work, you're there to work, not take care of your kid -
How many times a day is she taking the time to feed this baby?? At her desk or not, the fact that kid and her husband are there is completely inappropriate.....and her boss should absolulely NOT accomodate her child's feeding schedule, it is her responsibility to pump so that the baby can be fed a bottle by whomever the caregiver is while she is at the office ........
What is she the only women in the office who's ever had a baby ?? I have never heard of such a thing !!

So lets say she pumped a bottle of milk and her daughter doest take it. Whats you next solution? Some babies will not take bottles if they have the breast. Heck some bottlefed babies dont even take other brand bottles. My DS will only take one particular brand.
The company should definitly accomidate her.

This is my daughter. She will only nurse. She will not take a bottle at all.

Re: Discussion....Breast feeding at your desk in the office

I am not a mother so this is just my opinion.....
I would feel uncomfortable working within eyesight of someone who was brestfeeding at the office. I am totally for it and think it is great HOWEVER, this is my workplace and I cannot leave because I don't like what I see. If it were a park or a different setting where I had the option to get up and leave if I felt uncomfortable, that is totally on me, but at work? No, I don't think it is fair to the other workers. She def. should have a designated area in the offiice to do this....besides the bathroom of course. JMO

Re: Discussion....Breast feeding at your desk in the office

It seems like people seem to generally here have more of a problem with it in view of others than being done at work. I just feel that some people may feel uncomfortable. I don't think it that bad but consider that its in a workplace we have to think of others. Is it a place that gets customers/patients etc.?

The conference room unfortunately is all windows, but if someone saw her in there no one would bother her.

I think my boss could make special arrangements. We have one office that is empty and I am sure he would leave the door unlocked for her.

I think another issue we, as a nation, need to address: why are we SO uncomfortable with nursing mothers?

To quote Cole Porter "In old times a glimpse of stocking, was looked on as something shocking...Now, Anything goes..." So we can see a woman walking around with a tank top or bikini top and that doesn't make us uncomfortable, but a woman nursing her child (usually covered up) does ? First of all your company, by law, is supposed to accomodate her into a separate room that would allow her to breastfeed comfortably and not at her desk. I don't think she should be doing this at her desk in front of her co-workers but I mean if she has nowhere to go what is a girl to do?

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Then you baby is screaming and crying and your "uncomfortableness" goes right out the window. I think I was more uncomfortable with her crying than with nursing. I always covered up though.

I don't think it's appropriate.

We have a mother's room here at work - there's a rocking chair in there, a refrigerator, and a board where we can post pictures of our kids. Moms can use it to pump, BF, take a breather, etc.
I think every company should have this....

Like I said...this is just my opinion based on the fact that I am not a mother yet who has had the chance to experience this. I understand that the decision to BF at work is soley to accomodate your baby who must eat, rather than worry about who at your office is feeling uneasy about it. I get it. I guess it is easier for me to find it wrong since it is not me. For my own comfort and privacy though, I would probably pump if I decide to breastfeed at all.

I agree I think it's inappropriate at her desk especially with other people at the office.

What about out in the car? I think it's more inappropriate that she's having vistors during work hours. It's disturbing to the other employees and unfair to boot! Chat Icon

I totally agree. I think why this issue boils down to is why does breastfeeding in public, or at work, or at a restaurant, or anywhere, for that matter, make people *in this country* so particularly uncomfortable? It boggles my mind, and in this particular instance, yes, I can agree, perhaps breastfeeding at your cubicle at work may not be the most appropriate circumstance, but why does it shock so many people? And why would the employees become so indignified that they rumor amongst themselves about what an outrage it is, instead of making appropriate, private, SANITARY accomodations immediately?

I would understand if this Country were very unsupportive of Breastfeeding, like when our mother's were raising us. It would make more sense. But it truly boggles my mind that we've entered an era where everyone is bashing down a mother's door to harp on her about all the nutritional benefits of breastfeeding. And yet, when she's convinced, and makes the effort, there's really very little accomodations out there, and such shock and lack of support in the general public.

I really do think that if we're going to become a more respected Country, and utilize the skills of everyone in this country, particularly that of women who also want to have children, and want to succeed at both, then we have to change our perspective here, and start making better accomodations.

Re: Discussion....Breast feeding at your desk in the office

Everyone of course is entitled to your opinion on this.

But as a mother, I can tell you there are about 200 things I said I would NEVER do before I had DD, but you end up doing them.

I never thought I would nurse in public either.

In the beginning, everytime she needed to eat, I would go home or to a friend's house. Then one day no one was around and I didn't know what to do. I approached another mom in a store and asked "do you nurse?" (Something else I never thought I woudl do). She did and I asked her where I can feed the baby. She suggested Barnes and Nobles. I never thought I would BF in public- then I did. And you know what, it wasn't so bad.

THen I thought, I would never nurse in a restaurant. Until my baby was screaming and everyone was looking at me. I saw another mom across the room nursing, so I took out my blanket, put her on, and everyone stopped looking at me and went about their business.

Jordana is almost 1 year old now and even now i am discovering new "nevers" I do that I said I wouldn't.

My feelings of being uncomfortable or making others uncomfortable have been trumped by my child's needs. Now I am not saying whip it out wherever you want. Be considerate. Use a blanket and coverup. But my child's needs are more more important to me than my need for privacy or someone else feeling uncomfortable because I need to feed my child.

I wish my firm had this. We have a brand new building and we are a large firm. I used an executive phone booth to pump. It was big enoiugh and the door locked but I would have loved something like that.

I feel the same way. I became very comfortable bfing in places I would have never imagined.

One thing that still boggles my mind, why is it okay to have a teenage Britney Speaks in a provocative pose in underwear on the cover of Rolling Stone okay but bfing in public is lewd and indecent and should be done behind closed doors? Chat Icon

Re: Discussion....Breast feeding at your desk in the office

I don't think the desk is really appropriate.

However, I think that as a society, we need to provide more accomodations for working mothers. That means there should be a private, sanitary, comfortable nursing/pumping room for moms.

I think it's really sad how little our society does to help working moms balance work and family

I wonder how many of you have actually seen a woman BF publicly? Are you basing your answers on that? I mean for the most part is it is done so discreetly you don't even know it is happening.

I don't even know how to respond. A- not comfortable at ALL for the baby or the mother. B- not sanitary and C- THE COMPANY IS REQUIRED TO ACCOMODATE HER BY LAW!

How about what is fair to this mother who is ONLY trying to feed her child.

After working at Sears Portrait Studio for a year, I've seen it doen many ways..as you said, discreetly..moms who sit somewhere as private as is possible and have a blanket or coverup.

But I've also seen moms literally whip the boob out over a tank top and be fully exposed as Junior is sucking away. I've also seen kids walk up to mommy while she whips it out and they stand there nursing. So I think there are definitely boundaries that should be set up.

I don't think it's the worst thing to breast feed at your desk if you're doing it the appropriate way, but I also think it's sad that women HAVE to do this. They should be able to do it in a quiet, private place.

ETA: It does cause adistraction for some people, whether they're right or wrong, and I think also the fact of having a babay and possibly a dad in the office can be a diustraction for other workers, so I think it would be better all in all to have a special room for nursing
