Disney Travel insurance...other insurance/questions

Okay we are thinking of going August of 2013 to WDW. I understand that packages might be coming out on the 11th (rumored) - so we are trying to decide if we want to book now or wait. (does anyone remember when August dates are released for airfare?)

Talk to me about the disney travel insurance. I think I read that there were changes made since we got it last time.

This is the 1st time we are going during hurricane season. We purchase our own flights (not through disney).

So - should I wait to book the room/package and do tickets 1st - and buy insurance through insuremytrip (anyone have a specific plans that they recommends - would be nice to get cancel for any reason - or at a minimum something to cover us in case of a tropical storm or hurricane). Will disney travel insurance cover our air if we don't book air through them? A while back the guide books said not to add the insurance until right before final payment. But with other insurances to cover preexisting conditions you need to get it within about 10-14 days of 1st booking the trip.

Also does anyone know - if say I book the package, and then flights come out and we change our dates or have to change our dates if the insurance will follow us (i.e we book for 8/1 and have to move the trip to 9/1 or we book for 8/20 and have to move it to 8/22 because better prices for flights or package changes).

If I do disney insurance and have to change our dates does the insurance move with our package?

Christine, the July 11th date isn't a rumor anymore! Travel agents were notified by Disney that we'll have 2013 package information on the 11th. When on the 11th... well... I'm hoping for it to show up at 6am when the system comes back up for the day but we'll see.

Disney insurance DOES move with you if you need to move dates.

Other than that, since I'm not a licensed insurance agent, by state law (and Disney's own regulations) I can't give you details about the actual insurance plan. Disney, and the state insurance regulators, do that to protect the consumer from unqualified non-experts giving information about something they don't fully understand.

Also, Disney has state-specific insurance for many states (NY being one) to match the state's regulations so that's another reason you should speak with the insurance agency directly.

The number for TravelGuard (Disney's insurance provider) is 800.826.3899

Well that I understand. What do you recommend that your clients take? Do you suggest they take the disney insurance or go price their own from insuremytrip.

Re: Disney Travel insurance...other insurance/questions

Our agent actually called the Disney insurance people and asked if the air would be covered if we didn't book through Disney and were told yes. We only did this because we wanted to fly out of Islip and not JFK.

ETA: We actually had to cancel a trip in 2010 and used the insurance. The claim form was user friendly, and the refunds were prompt.

Thanks the travelguard form on wdw sites says it does cover airfare if purchased by ta or yourself. Sounds like they were pretty good. We always get insurance b/c we had a problem with a cruise and a foot of snow about 12 yrs ago. The disney one is cheaper and you only have to get it before final payment not within 10-14 days of booking. Just wondered if it was too good to be true - kwim?

Christine, most of our clients go with Disney insurance because it's easy, the price is fair, and our clients have had excellent experiences when they've had to put in a claim.

Like DancinBarefoot says, the form's not ridiculous and they refund promptly so it just makes sense.

Please don't hesitate to call TravelGuard with questions. They're really helpful and can give you an overview as well as answer questions about specific coverage.

What I like about disney's policy is that I don't have to get it until right before final payment in case anything changes. With insuremytrip you have to do it 10-14 days of 1st booking to wave preexisting conditions.

Thanks for help! The policy that they list on wdw website was NY specific and very comprehensive. But if I have further questions I will call them.

Christine,
I know that there are never any guarantees with weather but DH and I travelled to WDW in August all the time before we had DS and the worst that ever happened was a down pour for 30 minutes and then it cleared right up! Try not to stress too much about the weather (but I agree that trip insurance is a great idea!) and just pack your ponchos Chat Icon

I had insurance through Disney and had to cut my trip short due to a family emergency. I didn't book my flights through Disney, but the changes and new flights were covered by the insurance - and I got a refund for the balance of my trip. The disney forms were easy and the service was very prompt.

Thank you the only thing I worry about is bad weather causing cancellation, girls getting sick or I have a 93 yr old grandmother. It sounds like the disney insurance will be fine for us!
