DIY Sheetrock
has anyone attempted this by themselves? DH wants to sheetrock the whole basement. it has wood paneling everywhere...and not the flimsy kind...the actual wood. he's so not handy at all!

Re: DIY Sheetrock
Putting the sheetrock up is pretty easy, its all of the finish work that requires lots, that lots of experience. I use to hang sheetrock but, It would take me 2 weeks to properly tape one room, it really is a talent.
If you do get quotes get lots, the prices can be very different.
Good Luck!!!

Re: DIY Sheetrock
my DH did sheetrock. not difficult at all, but we hired tapers and spacklers.
also, we had cedar walls... we sheetrocked right over. helps keep our house insulated, actually. if you just have paneling, that should come off...

ditto!! my DH did all the sheetrock, he can tape and sand, but hates it! the taping is the part that really takes skill, my hubby hates seeing tape lines!! we had a guy who did an awesome job w/ taping, but he's pretty unreliable as far as scheduling, he's a neighborhood guy- but to give you a ballpark #- he charged us $500 for taping/sanding two very large rooms (and that was doing 3 coats of spackle).
oh and FYI for a basement, you might want to use the waterproof sheetrock- not sure if its necessary in your house, but DH used it in ours in any areas that could get water (i.e. the basement ceiling since the water pipes are above it as well as a bathroom on the 1st floor).
good luck!!

same here!
Taping is time consuming and difficult to do well and the sanding is really messy. DH does EVERYTHING himself except he will not tape because it is such PITA

Good call, the basement should be green board for the moisture, If your basement is anything like mine you empty the dehumidifier daily.

Re: DIY Sheetrock
When DH hung our sheet rock...he rented the SHEETROCK LIFT from Home Depot for the ceiling. He said it was a life saver!!!!
My dad loved it too!!!
Doesn't answer your questions...but I think this tool will save you so much time!!! and arm pain from holding the sheetrock on the ceiling. I had to hold it once, before we found this fabulous tool....and it was not fun for me.

Re: DIY Sheetrock
This is not a project for the inexperienced DIYer IMO. Hire a professional.

Re: DIY Sheetrock
Sheetrocking is easy. But, we hire taper and spacklers. This is the really hard part. But the actual sheetrocking is a piece of cake.
