Do any of your neighbor's have keys to your house?

OK, so DH and I are having a very polite disagreement and I was curious to see what everyone else does.

We are going away and I need someone to feed my cat while we are gone. In the past, I just take her to my parent's house and they watch her, but the last time she was there, she had some issues and I think my mom is afraid of her now!

So, I want to ask one of our neighbor's to see if they could do it for us. We have lived here for 2 years and these are neighbors that I like... they are around my parent's age, maybe a bit younger.

DH is giving me a hard time because he doesn't want anyone to have a key to our house. I would actually like a trusted neighbor to have a key in case one day I lock myself out for some reason and he is not around (my parents have a key but they are 35-40 minutes away). And keep in mind the first month that we lived in our house DH locked himself out and I had just flown to Kansas!

Anyway, just thought I would throw a poll out there... do you have a neighbor that has a key to your house?

No, no neighbor has a key to our house. We have only been here since Nov 07 and there is no one I trust yet.

By the same token, we don't have any of our neighbors keys either.

Nope, but my mom lives in the same town we do so she'd be able to take care of any pets if needed.

I answered yes, but my situation is different....

Our neighbors were our good friends way before we were neighbors. We wound up living up the block from each other. So, they have our key and we have theirs.

When my DD's were in HS I gave one to my neighbor because they always forgot their key or lost them.

no, but we give my neighbor our spare key when we go away... she feeds the cat for us.

I've been meaning to give her a set of keys b/c I am always locking myself out

Yes my next door neighboor (whom we have befriended) has our key and we have hers. We both have dogs and help each other out every once in a while.

my 'uncle' (close family friend) lives up the road from us. He has our key b/c he's kind of our handyman. Also in case we ever lock ourself out. Also we live next door to my parents and they have our key as well.

no... i have wacko loud neighbors, and neighbors that are quiet and i never see..

but in our last house... i had 1 great family next door, people in their late 40's who i probably would have trusted to feed my cat with a key

They don't have a key but I would be okay with it if our next door neighbors did.

We have their key, but they don't have ours. No reason, it just never needed to happen. I would give them a key, though, I totally trust them.

My pet sitter has a key to our house at all times.

No neighbors have our keys & we have lived in our house over 3.5 years. We have family that lives close by that all have keys & in an emergency, they can get into the house or lend us the key if we loose ours.

When I lived at my parents house, our neighbors did have keys to our house but that was a different situation. My parents have lived in their house for over 28 years. Whenever we went away (use to go away the entire summer) our neighbors would check on the house. My parents had keys to everyone on their blocks houses too.

No, I am still in the process of getting to know my neighbors.

None of my neighbors have one, but one friend does who lives about 2 miles away. DH had no problem w/it.

No. We have a combo lock on one of our doors, so we can't get locked out. It can also take a 2nd code, so if we DID need a neighbor to come into the house, I could always program a code for them. Then, I could change their code after they are done with it. You never know who they may "share" keys and combos with.....

I plan on giving our neighbor's a key. We get along with them really well and we trust them completely. When we lived in NY, our neighbor's their received our key after I locked myself out of the house one morning coming home from dropping DH at the train station.

no...my dad lives in the same town so he has a key. When we went away, we also gave a key to one of our neighbors that we are close with just in case. We took it back when we got home.

Our neighbor has the key to our house, our security code and all our emergency contact information. I am glad that I completely trust them because I think that it's important that someone nearby has all of this information.

No way was my answer. Not that I don't trust them, because I totally do. I wouldn't feel comfortable giving my key out. Mind you we've only been living there for 7 months AND my IL's live two blocks away and my parents are only 10 blocks away...I would ask them to come over, so my situation is a little different.

no way. However, my parents have a key and live nearby.

No, my DH's parents have a key and when my friend feeds our cat when we're away we lend her a key.

We just moved to the neighborhood in May though, so we don't have a strong relationship with the neighbors yet.

I live in pa..we moved there last year from brooklyn.

my neighbor is so freaking nice and we go to their parties and we're at their house etc. She's a Stay at home mom with 3 kids. we've thought about her having a key since I work in NYC and DH is in philly.

We had issues with our alarm going off randomly when we first moved in and we were both so far away during the day, that we thought it would be a good idea to give her a key and the code. She does have our #'s and calls us every now and then if something was going on which is nice of her. She brought in our mail when we were on vacation.

I havent asked her about how she would feel having a key...but if the situation arose, i wouldnt worry if she had a key.

things are different out here than in NY..so i understand your DH's reservations.

We have very good friends that live a couple of miles that have our keys and vica versa. We both have family that live out of state so we are our only option for emergencies.
