I don't have a video one and honestly don't feel like I need one. I live in a 2-story house too and the audio-only monitor works for me!
Same here. We've never had a video monitor. A friend of mine had an experience when she looked at the monitor to make sure her baby was ok, and the baby was gone It turns out that her neighbor across the street was on the same frequency, and she was able to see her neighbor's DS' room. Sorry...that creeps me out.

If I didn't have a video one, then I wouldn't know what I was missing. So, I would say you don't need one. I have a regular one and it works fine.
However, I do have a video monitor (summer handheld) and I couldn't imagine not having it:
- The biggest benefit I think , is that it allows you to see if the baby is actually sleeping, instead of just laying there awake, quietly. Sometimes I would swear DD was asleep, but she wasn't. This helped me better schedule the day since I knew, more accurately how long she napped. (sometimes she would wake up and lay there quietly for half an hour. I would have thought she was asleep)
- When I started to give her a blanket in the crib, I didn't have to peek in a hundred times, trying to avoid the creek in the hallway so it didn't disturb her
- Also, I would hear her start to stir and sometimes she would get up, but then I would be able to see that she layed back down , which might lead to her falling back asleep. I think if I didn't have the video, I would think she was awake, I heard her , I would just go in and get her
Those were the biggest benefits to me.
100% agree with this!! People who say they don't see the need for one have never experienced how wonderful they can be.

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
I live in a colonial. DH and I are on the 1st floor and the kids are on the 2nd floor. I thought about getting a video monitor a few times but when it came down to it, our house isn't huge and I figured that I know how I am, and I would need to go upstairs and physically see them.

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
I didn't start off with one but did buy one when we decided to do CIO. Now having one I can't see NOT having one. Mine actually died a few days ago and have been using my reg one...I hate it...lol. I'll be getting another one asap...especially since I plan on doing CIO with Xavier soon.

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
We didn't use it often b/c DS hated the crib, but it was great for the short period that he did sleep in the crib. I liked being able to check up on him without having to go into the room. I definitely think it's worth getting.

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
I must be a really laid back mom because I never needed to constantly check on DS. I go in there once, right before I go to bed to make sure he is covered with a blanket and that's it. I could tell by his cries if he needed me, was dirty, was fussing, etc. I got an audio monitor only and its sensitive enough for me to hear him breathe. I only put DS in his crib to sleep, so there IMO what do I need to SEE. I might feel differently when he is older and not confied to a crib but I figure I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. For now, I dont see the point of spending the money.

We don't have one and we've got 2 kids going on 3. There have been times that I've wished I did have one. But you can definitely live w/o one.

We dont' have one and probably never will. As long as you have an audio monitor you should be fine.

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
My video baby monitor is the single BEST baby item I had for each of my children. It has saved me from getting up or out of bed millions of times.

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
I dont have one. We have the regular Graco and I'm happy with it. She's in the room next to us..we check on her a few times before we go to bed. I just never saw the need for it. Plus, I heard too many stories of how it picks up other kids on the block & how people can see yours.

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
You don't REALLY need one, however, I found (both in my apartment and now my house) it gave me the freedom to 'check' on DS without having to go in.
If he was crying, was it because he was standing up or was he sleep-crying? If I hear a bang, did he roll off the bed or just hit the headboard and he's still snoring. It gave me the peace of mind to be able to see DC whenever and how ever often I wanted without standing over him.
I couldn't live without it, even now at 3.5 years old. It just give me a peace of mind that nothing or an audio monitor wouldn't give.

It's a must have for me. DS would cry out a lot in his sleep. If I didn't have a video monitor to see that his eyes were still closed, I would have woken him many times when I thought he was awake! I also like that I can visually check on him at any time without possibly disturbing him.
ITA! Couldn't live without mine now! I still use mine for DD who's 4! And I got a new one for DD #2!

I say yes 100%
There is a world of difference IMO between when your LO is making noises, crying, etc.. and not having to run upstairs or downstairs to see if they are ok and all you have to do is look on the monitor.
I don't know what I would do without mine.

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
I LOVE mine! I don't use it 24/7, but will turn it on to see what DS is up to, if he's still sleeping or napping, then turn it off. Sometimes, I hear him cry, think he's up, only to see he's still sleeping. It's saved me waking him mistakenly DOZENS of times. You can't tell with a regular monitor or listening in from the door!
We also use it in the summer to go next door to BBQ and can "watch" DS while we're out.

I dont use mine at night but I love using it when DD is in the pack and play and I am on a different floor cleaning. I dont have to keep listening for her over the vacuum or running water.

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
I always thought they were unnecessary and still do
I have an Angelcare with a monitor that reads her breathing when she was younger (cat has since chewed thru that wire).
I still use the monitor for sound though.
I don't need to see her I need to hear her.
I am a werido mom who wants to go IN and see her kid as much as possible. I don't think its much to ask that I get out of bed a million times. Its part of the job. I enjoy seeing her sleeping. I feel better touching her and soothing her after a coughing attack. I like to peek in through a slit of the door to watch her play. I know a video monitor can do that for you but lets just say I like to see it with my own eyes!

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
I had the same initial reaction with my first until I babysat a friend's baby who had one. They are pretty cool and if you have a registry put it on and see what you get. I think it's great bc you can see them without going in the room. I think I'm pretty lax but think they are pretty useful to have!

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
I never had a video monitor, only an audio one. And I hardly ever used it. However, I have a high ranch and I find it small and easy to hear.
I guess if I had a 2 level home with beds on a different level, I may have had one. Then again, probably not, I am very laid back with things like that.

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
I could not live without mine - and I have 2! One for each DS. And although we have a split level and it's useful for when they are sleeping in the beds and I am downstairs, we also leave it on at night when they are in the rooms next to ours. (I leave the sound on and the video off until I check it) I can check to see what's going on without opening their doors. My little guy will sometimes cry before he falls asleep. A few weeks ago he was crying and when I checked the monitor, his leg was stuck between the bars in the crib. I was almost going to let him cry until he fell asleep! No you don't NEED it, but it makes life a little easier.

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
I didn't have one when ds was an infant but got one when he was 18 months and transitioned to the toddler bed because he never slept and was a climber. I find I am much more neurotic with it.

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
Never had one, never will. I am not a fan of them personally. the audio ones have been great!!
I am the type of person where if i saw my kid moving around, curled up weird etc i would prob go in there and end up waking them up..I'm better off not knowing, lol.
I can see WHY people like them but i think they add to more neurotic behavior!

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
I like mine for the fact that if I hear her crying I can look and see if she is just crying in her sleep, or if she lost the paci, or what she is doing. I can usually judge by her movements etc if it's a cry I need to attend to or just her crying in her sleep.

Re: Do I REALLY need video monitor for baby?
For me yes. We live in a 2 story house and what I find the best about the monitor is that I we can see if she is really fussy or just winding down. It has stopped us from going in there unecessarily YKWIM? She sleeps great b/c there is less interference from us!
