Do kids learn script / cursive?
Is this part of the new guidelines? If so, when? I remember 3rd grade.

In most districts it's introduced in 2nd grade and continues to be taught through 3rd.

Re: Do kids learn script / cursive?
DD is in 2nd and hasn't learned it yet. Maybe in 3rd? Not sure if they teach it at all anymore.

This is how it is for my kids. I have a 2nd and 3rd grader and they do all assignments in cursive now that they “graduated” ((aka the teacher can read their script lol))

Both of my children learned it in third grade. We are in NJ and it is still taught here.

Do kids learn script / cursive?
Not in our district. My DD is in 5th and my son is graduated, and neither learned script for more than maybe a day. Nothing was ever written in script (essays, etc.)

My son has learned it and is learning. Started in 2nd and in 4th he's had to do a couple of assignments in cursive. He goes to catholic school in NJ.

Re: Do kids learn script / cursive?
I don’t think my district teaches it anymore. I heard some teachers have done it as an “art” lesson. In 2nd, DS has started to learn how to type!

Do kids learn script / cursive?
Idk if they teach it anymore. My DD happened to take an interest in it, so we got her a cursive dry erase placemat and she taught herself in 1st grade.

Re: Do kids learn script / cursive?
I teach 3rd in NYC and it is not part of our curriculum. However, I do teach it (manage to squeeze it in here and there during writing) because I feel it is important.

Re: Do kids learn script / cursive?
I don't know, other than to sign your name, do we really need cursive anymore? Print is so much more legible to read. I haven't used cursive ever in my adult life to be honest.

Re: Do kids learn script / cursive?
Our school district teaches in 3rd and that is the end of it :( It aggravates me to no end that kids will not be able to read and write script

Me either, I always print and in all caps too, just the legit caps letters are larger, LOL.

LOL. I see people freaking out over this on Facebook like it's an un-american or something. Like we are taking the pledge out of school, the word "God" and now this! It's like this whole- America is going to shit! campaign... bring back the pledge and cursive writing.
And I always wondered what we need to learn cursive for. Teach the kids to sign their name... and that's it. Cursive is a relic of the past. Why do you need two ways to write the alphabet??? As long as you know one, you should be good. Most everything is done over email, text, typing now anyway. I mean should we also teach Calligraphy in school?

These articles give reasons why cursive should be taught.
My mom died at 50, she wrote letters and a journal all in cursive. I upsets me that my kids will never meet my mom, it would upset me even more if they couldn't read the letters or journal entries she wrote because they can't read cursive.

So I have to say, my daughter has never been taught cursive and the other day she was reading something written all in cursive- and she did pretty well. Like I was surprised!
I asked her how she knew how to read 'script" and she said, mommy, it's just fancier!
And honestly when you look at something written in cursive- as a whole sentence- it's not too far off from normal lettering. It's not like short hand.... now THAT is greek to me!

I agree with this...people that don’t know cursive can absolutely read it. Only a handful of letters are truly different and you can usually figure it out based on the rest of the letters in the word.

My nephew is 9 and he can not read cursive and neither can his friends. One of his friends was looking at a recipe written out by my aunt and told me that he only knows how to read English. I told him it IS English and my nephew looked at the paper and said, cursive, another language, we can't read it.
