Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
I thought there was a previous post like this, but I can't find it now.
Anyway - I was having a debate on facebook with a relative. I think the Town of Brookhaven should have been more prepared. Now schools are closed because the buses can't get out and around (I'm assuming that's the main reason)
She says she feels the town did the best they could. Most of their time was spent trying to get around cars that were stuck. (I agree, but I still think they should have had more manpower out there.) On a side note, she is Town of Islip.
Thoughts??

Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
If you are upset I would go to a town board meeting and speak up. I don't know what the finances are in your particular town, but that can have a big effect on services like plowing. Where I live the town does not provide plowing or even garbage pick up. We have to contract to have it done. For us, we live in a development with an HOA so it is negotiated for us, but there are places in my town that have to contract for it themselves and if they don't then they don't get plowed/trash hauled away.
ETA: I would start by calling your town highway department. I would call and ask them when they plan to plow your specific street. Highway Dept

Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
Im in the town of Brookhaven and im way over mad...my road has not been touched at all, and everytime i call the town or any elected officals office i get no answers or put on hold to which no one returns to answer my questions...i plan on def going to a town board meeting to complain about it because to me with the amount of taxes we pay here this is unacceptable

I'm town of Islip and trapped in my apartment, the street I live off is inches of solid ice. I was being very patient, but I may have to take my 2nd day of work off tomorrow.

Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
I think we do have a right to be mad. We've had storms of this magnitude before, and never did we have to wait this long for streets to be plowed! As the storm was happening, no preparations for cleanup were being made - so salt/sand/plows taking care of the snow and ice as it was falling. Which is what led to this disaster. It seems like money was cut from the budget to pay for something else, and we have to pay the price.
Additionally, the entire area around StonyBrook Hospital was in terrible shape still on Sunday....that is a disgrace!!! Hospitals should be a priority....no exceptions!
I'm fuming. My block saw its first plow today...and it was less than effective. So we, the people living on the street, have had to take care of it on our own.

I have very mixed emotions. I see why people are mad, and I see why it's taking so long. There's no perfect answer, and I feel like there'd still be ******** even if the response had been better. No matter what it's lose-lose, but maybe this will encourage people to get involved in local government instead of being apathetic.

Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
Just saw on Facebook a photo of payloaders loaned from NYC just sitting on the KMart parking lot at exit 63. I would be very mad. How can the streets not be plowed yet?

Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
Saturday I wasn't mad. Sunday I wasn't mad but I was scratching my head as to why nothing had been done. Today, I'm getting pretty pissed. I HAVE to go to work tomorrow. DH HAS to go to work tomorrow. He has to be at work an hour before I do but at this rate, he's going to have to drive me in on his way and then pick me up on his way home because if they do get around to our block, we'll need both of us there at the same time to dig out the driveway or if we get stuck on one of the side streets, at least we'll have 2 people to dig ourselves out. DH doesn't get mad easily but he's getting pretty irate about this.
Our neighbor's huge ass pickup truck got stuck on the hill on our block just a couple of hours ago just trying to get into his driveway. DH had to go out there to help him out.

THIS. Sometimes people just want someone to blame and something to yell about.
IT is a sad sad commentary on us as a public that for "most" we cannot make it a few days ....$hit happens and we have to roll with the punches better for sure!
There were some scary instances though of people who needed to get out and couldn't. So yes, certaintly scary ....
But I do think that the response -by Brookhaven especially -was not as swift as it should have been. I see why people are mad. But they will be even madder when their taxes are raised to have them be more prepared.
I dont remember there ever being a storm of this magnitude like people are saying?
I remember two years ago there was like 21 inches right after Christmas...and we went two full days with no plowing......
Back before I had kids we had 26 inches ( again right after Christmas) and we lived on Montauk highway..the side road wasn't plowed for us to get out for 3 days. So this HAS happened before in terms of plowing....
I think people have selective memory and forget as it hasn't happened in a long time , and also never THIS much and this much unexpected.
Remember the weather reports were not showing this amount of snow, so they WERE prepared....for what was SUPPOSSED to come.
What happened after? Well someones gonna have to answer a lot of people's questions and I do understand the anger.
I just try to see it from all sides and not waste anger on things beyond my control.

You have the right to be mad about anything you want. Doesn't mean everyone will agree.
IMO I think the lack of plowing was insane. And I'd be mad.

Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
Sorry, Im mad.
We, as LIers, pay a ridiculous amount of taxes. There is no reason why it should be taking 4 days to clear off roads.
So how about this...you are one of those people who has not seen a plow. Your 3 year old is playing around and hurts himself, your neighbor has a heart attack, etc., how exactly are emergency crews supposed to get to your child or your neighbor, etc?
On top of that we had Sandy and now a bunch of school districts have to take off more days because its unsafe. It seems to me that funding was cut somewhere, yet we pay more in taxes. Makes no sense.
People from places who get hit w/ these storms on the regular (upstate, etc): does life stop for a week?

I agree! I remember big snowfalls and hearing trucks throughout the night. This time, it was silence all night, second day and into the third. My neighbor had to flag down a truck on Sunday and beg for them to do our block. This was late Sunday. Something definetely is not adding up here.

We had record breaking snowfall, where I am it was 32". That was my reason for asking..I just couldn't remember ever having almost 3 feet of snow. I only remember the one in 2010..where I am it was just under 2 ft. Also, the weather predicted my area to have 10"-16". We got DOUBLE! I just think no was one prepared for how early it started, how long it lasted, and how much snow we actually had.
But DAY 4 with no plow is completely insane! I stocked up on some necessities, but certainly not enough to last 5 days...I better see something tomorrow..as in a bulldozer.

Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
I am definately mad. The town had plenty of time to prepare and the did not. Many main roads are not passable and if you can drive on them you better have a truck or your getting stuck. 3 days after a storm that is inexcusable. What is getting me more angry now is the lack of help. The town failed but where is the state, where are the other counties. Send in all your plows and workers, they aren't using them and we need them. I heard Cuomo sent plows to Conn. Is he kidding me. Take care of your own first then farm out your equipment. As we saw from Sandy and now this storm, NY needs to sit down and figure out contingency and disaster recovery plans as it is obvious they have no idea what to too. Also, these kids need to go to school. How much are they going to lose? It's just ridiculous.

Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
Yes, people have a right to be unhappy, especially in Brookhaven, but like I said on the other thread, I don't think that the govt has a liability to pay for towing of cars for people who got stuck.

Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
I lived in Nassau for the storm in 2010. Our roads were plowed in less than 24 hours and we had the same amount of snow. This is my first snow living in Suffolk, specifically Town of Brookhaven. When talking to our neighbors yesterday, they said they have seen this much snow, back in 2010, and they were plowed in less than 24 hours. They've never seen it like this before.

Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
You should be mad but not sure what else how they will fix this. IMO people were on the roads. Cars were stranded, and prevented the roads from being cleared. People should have stayed off the roads, but that wasn't possible for a lot of people. I remember the same thing happened in the boroughs a few years ago

I have been through many storms, even 1978 as a kid and we were never snowed in like this. The plows were out as soon as they could. Every other storm you would be awake all night hearing them come up and down the block all night long. Last year we got lucky with no snow. Layoffs were done, I believe in 2011. Instead of layoffs maybe they should have cut pay and kept the employees. I am well aware of how much a town employee makes and thay have published the higher ups also that is just ridiculous for what they seem to do. Romaine is on vacation and is stating that he wouldnt have gone if he knew how bad the storm was going to be and he hasnt had a vacation in 2 years (hear those violins?). He left on Wednesday. They knew way before that this would be a big storm and he hasnt even tried to come home.
