Question from the out of stater now.. how is this guy your mayor?
Excellent question. Kinda glad im now a NH resident
Isn't this the same guy who got rid of the horses in Central Park? Of which my daughter has dreamed of riding but now I have to quietly ignore that they won't be there in a month when we visit? Ugh
The horses are still there.
He hasn't gotten rid of them yet. It's still a fight.
ETS: And I live in manhattan. So he is my mayor. But I don't think most of the comments aren't stating he is their mayor. I think it has more to do with a lot of the women on here are speaking as family members of a NYPD.

I agree with them turning their backs and although I agree that the funerals were NOT the time or place, they really don't HAVE a time or place to show their displeasure with the mayor. They can't strike, they rarely get together in masses and even rarer in front of the mayor. So while I don't think the funerals were the best places. where and when else could they have done it. It sent a message. Their heads were bowed, they were still in prayer, they are not disrespecting the officers or the families...this was not an easy decision for them. I'm sure MANY were torn about this very question.
Exactly this! This was the only opportunity to express themselves. They weren't disrespecting the families, they were silently showing their disrespect that the mayor has earned IMO.

That they don't belong on NYC streets. And I do agree with that. The traffic in that area is INSANE! I wish they would just expand the trails/paths in the park and keep them in there. It would be safer.
ETS: That's just 1 reason. He also states that's its inhumane. But he has yet to visit the stalls and see how the horses are treated.
A lot of people think he just wants them out so the city can take over the property where the stalls.
He wants to replace the horses with old fashioned electric cars.

Its terribly inhumane. These poor horses. Don't get me started. But that is not the point of this thread.

That is pretty much it. And some how this is disrespecting the police?
I would love to know how many people on this thread actually live in the city and deal with life here on a daily basis? I live here and the only difference I've seen since DeBlasio took office is the removal of stop and frisk policies. Otherwise, things seem exactly the same.
Well, I just moved out of the city in the last couple of months. I can ABSOLUTELY say that it has been worse under his leadership. I've never seen someone who has so little respect for his position. Aside from the whole police debacle. He constantly arrives late to EVERYTHING. Memorials, press conferences, meetings. When he speaks, he comes across as completely unpolished and ill prepared. I was NOT a Bloomberg fan. Especially with his handling of education. However, I would take him 1000 times over De Blasio. Bloomberg was a pompous prick but he was a LEADER and kept the city safe and clean.
I could go on with anecdotes from the UWS where I lived (and where my inlaws continue to live for 40+ years). Under his leadership there has been a crisis going on with rising crime rates and illegal homeless shelters in the area (all given the go ahead from his office). The removal of stop and frisk has absolutely made a drastic difference in that community. There have been several instances of violent crimes in riverside park over the last 9 monghs - something that NEVER happened during Bloomberg's tenure. Granted this is one small piece of NYC, but I've witnessed, first hand, the effects of his 'leadership.'
While I miss the city dearly...I am THANKFUL I am not living there during the De Blasio years.

She did? Well, I had no idea about that! You're right, big deal about that.
I was referring to her past career working in politics and then working for her husband, editing his speeches, etc. So to sum up, since she was always editing her husband, she should have edited her choice in wardrobe.
So, how about maybe we calm down a little bit?

Nell, I have a question.
First I deeply respect the police and what they do.
My understanding is the DeBlasio made a remark that was public that he spoke to his son that (I am ABSOLUTLY paraphrasing) that he had to be more careful because he was black. That he had more of a chance getting stopped by a cop because he was black.
I don't think there is a person in NYC (or the US for that matter) that would disagree with that statement.
So, is that he said it out load? Publically?
That is pretty much it. And some how this is disrespecting the police?
I would love to know how many people on this thread actually live in the city and deal with life here on a daily basis? I live here and the only difference I've seen since DeBlasio took office is the removal of stop and frisk policies. Otherwise, things seem exactly the same.
So far they do seem the same. Except my 6th grader now gets free lunch! If anyone does live in the 5 boroughs you have 3 more years to vote again! Working in the City is another issue than living here....

Re: Do you agree with or disagree with the police officers turning their backs on Diblasio again?
To everyone saying it was disrespectful to the slain officers and their families: Have you heard this from any other person in law enforcement? Not one (of the dozens) I have had direct contact with, from various police forces, say that it was perceived that way. These men and women in blue would not ever do anything to disrespect a fallen brother or sister. These officers stood outside, in formation, in the cold and rain--for quite a while-- to honor one of their own. Turning their backs on DiBlasio had NOTHING to do with the respect for the fallen and their families. No one went to that funeral with making a political statement their agenda. They did what they felt they had to do in their hearts, the only way they could let their feelings be known.
FWIW, has no one here ever walked away from or turned their back at a funeral because someone they knew shouldn't be there showed up? I know I sure have. When the other person makes it about them, as DiBlasio did (IMO), they are the ones being disrespectful to the person being buried.

Do you agree with or disagree with the police officers turning their backs on Diblasio again?
I fear that under this mayor NYC will return to the way it was in the 70s. NYC is a crazy place it requires someone with an almost dictator like mentality to keep any sense of order. You need someone who is extremely tough on crime and isn't worried about being politically correct ( stop and frisk ). Otherwise, it becomes a chaotic urban jungle . Talk to people who lived through the 1970s.

When cops are using their own discretion that happens. I wonder what else they may be ignoring to prove "their" point. Im not surprised and actually predicted this.

They are ignoring all the things the protestors (and Diblasio) asked them to ignore. You know, petty crimes, broken windows type crimes, etc. Isn't that was protestors were asking for? So now they are going to be critized and fingerpointed AGAIN? Shocking. They are using their discretion? Well when they applied the LAW they were attacked and rallied against.
You can't have it both ways. You can't have people revolting against them, protesting, spitting at them, attacking them, and expect them still to crack down on petty crimes. It can't work that way.

Seriously? They did their job and were rallied against to stop the broken windows policies. They did their job and when people breaking the law resisted ARREST, and were killed as a result of their own RESIST re the crimes they committed, all hell broke loose. So what do you propose they do now?

eric garner was not resisting arrest. he was CLEARLY in a defensive posture, and he did not deserve to be piled on and killed. i will never understand why it is wrong for the mayor to question the police and some of their policies. why is it that the police always want to be infallible, having to answer to no one?
i think their turning of their backs at both funerals was in very poor taste. those poor mens funerals were not the time or place for them to make a statement
