I have a very good friend that does ask people to take their shoes off.....Never bothered me, in fact it makes me feel at home.

I would never ask anyone to take off their shoes - and I HATE when people ask me to do it.

Hmmm...thanks everyone for your reply...it definitely seems like a mixed review. Not sure what I'll do yet...never had this many people over before

this question is a highly debated topic on another message board that i post on!
in my culture, it is rude to walk into someone's home w/your shoes on. i always take my shoes off before walking into someone's home, unless they insist that i keep them on. we dont have a house yet, so i havent encountered this problem yet, but i think i'll try the placing the shoes by the door trick and see if people get a hint then, but if not i think i would ask as politely as possible if they would mind taking their shoes off.

Re: Do you ask people to take off their shoes when you have a crowd over?
Rude. I would never ask guests to remove their shoes.
Don't host/entertain if you're concerned about your floors or carpeting, whether they should be "damaged" by dirt dragged in from shoes or accidental spills.
Wood floors get dents, scratches, etc...it happens and I think it's part of the charm/character of wood floors.

I agree, unless it would make them more comfortable then go for it

I used to when we first bought our house, b/c it was brand new and I didn't want to get the rugs dirty...but then when we moved in with our dogs, reality set in and I got over it.

Re: Do you ask people to take off their shoes when you have a crowd over?
I hate this. I would never ask someone to remove their shoes.
I was just at a friends holiday party and it surprised the hell out of me that she asked us to remove our shoes. She had coworkers at this party, and this guy turned a little red when asked-and then apologized for the holes in his socks!!
It can cause embarrasment possibly, and i just think that like browneyedgirl said...your house isn't a museum! No need to treat it as such. Just my opinion.

Re: Do you ask people to take off their shoes when you have a crowd over?
Eh...if people are going to go upstairs, where I have white carpet, yes. Downstairs with the tile and wood floor, no.
I have had people ask me at their house and it doesn't matter to me; I do it if it makes someone happy. My best friend comes to my house with slippers.

Re: Do you ask people to take off their shoes when you have a crowd over?
I don't know if I consider it rude, but I personally prefer to wear my shoes in someone else's home. I would feel weird sitting around a Pampered Chef party in just my socks - it would seem as if I was partially undressed!
I always take my shoes off in my own home, but it has nothing to do with dirt, and everything to do with comfort! Guests can do whatever they choose in my home.

Re: Do you ask people to take off their shoes when you have a crowd over?
This is defininately a regional thing because I grew up in MI and my entire family still lives there, and no one wears shoes in their house. I have friends I visit and they look at me like I'm weird when I take my shoes off in their house.

Same as in mine! I can't imagine coming to someone's home and not taking off my shoes. Especially in the winter! That just seems very rude to me!

Re: Do you ask people to take off their shoes when you have a crowd over?
If you're telling family to take shoes off, that's one thing. Pampered Chef party-goers (which would include co-workers, and other friends) I think it's rude to ask them to take off their shoes. You should reconsider having people over on your new wood floors if you don't want people "messing them up". Not everyone is okay with taking their shoes off in public, myself included (unless it's at a family member's house).
ETA: AND, where would you have people keep their shoes? To me, it would look like a kindergarden room at nap time - a pile of shoes near the door?

it is prefectly ok to ask people to take off their shoes - just have a basket of those dollar store slippers right by the door so people with cold feet can take a pair.

Re: Do you ask people to take off their shoes when you have a crowd over?
I don't, and I think a bunch of people walking around shoeless is kinda . My brother had a party last night and some people had taken their shoes off. Others didn't. When I went in the unfinished basement to play pool, they were down there with no shoes on . Yeah, um cold cement floor. I don't think so.
