I would never ask guests at my home to take off their shoes, I find it somewhat ridiculous. But I'm a big believer in having a functional home that you can "live in" and enjoy.

Exactly-it's an outfit! If I knew I'd have to take my shoes off I would compensate with a big hat!

I would never ask anyone to take their shoes off in my home.

DH and I had this discussion and we're buying a house at the moment.

We both agreed, with the new carpets we're putting down and the winter season here, yes, we ask people to take off their shoes. during the summer, we may be less inclined to say something, but with the wet weather, I don't want mud on my new carpets.

Honestly- If I ever go into someone's home with MUD on my shoes, I'm always sure to wipe off my feet before walking around their home.

it is prefectly ok to ask people to take off their shoes - just have a basket of those dollar store slippers right by the door so people with cold feet can take a pair.

if thats the case....just dont entertain....seems like its more of a hassel for you than worth it...

why Chat Icon all my family and friends do this - what's wrong with a bunch of toss away slippers? It's just rude to walk around in someone's house with your dirty shoes on. Personally I would never do that.

To be honest, I am sometimes more afraid what is on people's feet (like fungus of the skin or nail) than what is on the bottom of thier shoes. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Never! DH & I walk around the house with our shoes on all the time. I don't think it is nice to ask your guests to do that!

Re: Do you ask people to take off their shoes when you have a crowd over?

I never wear shoes in my home - I hate the idea of it and shoes in the bathroom completely gross me out. That said, the only time I've asked anyone to remove their shoes is if they were wet (rain, snow).

As a guest, I read my hosts - if I walk into the house and see a row of shoes, I will remove mine. If the hosts are wearing theirs, I'll keep mine on.

I would not be offended if someone asked me to remove my shoes.

I don't find it rude. We don't wear shoes in our house but I never ask my guests to take theirs off.

Re: Do you ask people to take off their shoes when you have a crowd over?

When I met DH he lived in an apartment and he had very light grey carpeting. Everyone knew to take their shoes off when they came (I am guessing he just told them). No one ever seemed to complain. Now that we are in our house and we have wood floors we dont ask anyone. My SIL does take shoes off right when she comes in. I kinda wish we did ask because our floor got really scratched up on Christmas and it is ashame since the floors are only 2.5 years old.
One thing I do not allow which everyone knows is smoking in the hosue, everyone goes outside regardless of the weather. If they dont like that then they dont have to come over.

i do now after hearing by cousins story - her house was redone a year ago and at her christmas party this year someone had heals with the nail poking through - or lost the cover and she has dents all over the wood floors on her first floor and has to have them sanded down to be repaired

No. Feet gross me out. I'd rather mop and vacuum after!
