Re: Do you brush your dogs teeth?

the vet told me we should be doing it every day. Otherwise its useless because the plaque starts to harden.

We try, but Murray fights it a lot. We just do the best we can.

Also, dry food helps to break up plaque and avoid things getting stuck in between teeth. I draw the line at flossing. Chat Icon

No flame, you have a dog, understandable. I won't judge you for treating it as such.

But I don't have just a dog, I have a member of my family that I feel is worth the care I give him.

I've tried, but my dog flips out. I still do it till he freaks, but I guess something is better then nothing, but I don't know how successful it is. He doesn't go to the groomer since I can give him a bath myself.

I used to feel this way when i was living with my parents and we had family dogs.. I remember how there teeth rotted out and there breath stunk.. I never thought of brushing dogs teeth I thought it was normal not to care for a dog in that way..

Well.... When i got my own dog and brought her to the vet for her first visit I was eduacated on how important it is to care for them and how if there teeth rot it causes illnesses that whould have been preventable and to say the least they have terrible breath.. I dont know about anyone else but my dog is in my bed in my face laying all over Dh and I.. Kissing us all over.. I dont want a dog with smelly rotten teeth near me ... The odor is unbearable.. And they also get infections in there gums and tooth aches.. Chat Icon

So no flame here but i also thought like that when I was growng up.. Now things have changed.. This is my baby and I do more for her than some humans.. Chat Icon

Honestly, i felt the same way. But the vet gave us a lecture and we half tried. Then our puppy have retained canine teeth, and we had to take a trip to the vet dentist. It was going to cost 600 dollars to get them pulled. There we got a lecture all about doggie dental care.

To be honest, what really hit me was the $ issue. I'd rather not spend thousands of dollars on getting the dogs teeth pulled, especially if I can do something for 5 minutes a day to save that money.

I like vacations, and I would rather have my $ for that. Maybe its a bad way to look at it, but that was the big tipping point for us.

Re: Do you brush your dogs teeth?

Do the groomers brush their teeth? I don't do it at home, she hates it, but she gets groomed every 6-8 weeks. How often are they supposed to get their teeth brushed anyway?

I don't even know that you need toothpaste. I think it's more to give them something to concentrate on.

You have to use doggie toothpaste - they'll swallow human toothpaste and it's not good for them.

Re: Do you brush your dogs teeth?

I'm trying to do it more often.

My childhood dog had bad teeth as she got older (b/c we didn't brush), the vet had to "knock her out" to clean her teeth thoroughly b/c we didn't..It can get dangerous as they are older b/c of the anesthesia.

We try to once a week. It's a pain, mostly because she loves the taste her tongue gets in the way and she gets all excited. She chews a lot so I know that helps with her teeth.

No, he gets it done when he gets groomed.
Just had him groomed this week and his teeth look great.

I also give him the dentabones and he eats dry food.

But Honestly, I had never done it on any of my previous dogs and they never had any issues.
I guess it's the luck of the draw.

Teemu too! His tongue is out of control. It makes it so hard!

Re: Do you brush your dogs teeth?

We just bought him a doggy toothbrush and toothpaste set. DH and I tried it once but he got fidgety. He eats only dry food and treats, but we will continue to try to brush them and get him used to it.
In response to MrsFlatbread, believe it or not, dogs can get rotted teeth and gums just like we can. He is part of our family and his health and well being is important to us.
