Do you clean out your dryer vent?
I always clean the lint trap but i havent cleaned the vent out. I read it should be done every 2 years. Well, now i just dropped a thing of freakin blistex down the vent when i removed the lint trap and now i need to clean it out. Is it hard to clean it out? DH says getting the blistex out is not as simple as removing the hose to clean it. Has anyone ever dropped anything down there? I can dry my clothes until i clean this thing out and am hoping it can be done tonight. Help!! TIA!

You call a professional company to do it. Lint can get trapped and cause a fire.

YES! It should DEFINITELY be cleaned PROFESSIONALLY, its a fire hazard to not clean it. My sister had a house fire years ago from it being backed up.

Who knew, right?!? If i hadn't dropped the damn blistex down there, i'd have no clue. I vacuum the lint trap area every so often, but that's it. yikes!
Can anyone recommend someone REASONABLY PRICED to come in and do it?

Unless you only do laundry every 2 weeks, you should be cleaning the trap after every single load. Your clothes will dry faster.

The lint filter is the lint trap. But apparently you are supposed to get deep down into that area where to clean out the entire vent leading to the outside.

The area where the screen rests in, apparently you are supposed to clean out deep inside there. There is a tube thingy that goes from the dryer to the outside vent. That is supposed to be cleaned out.

Re: Do you clean out your dryer vent?
There is a tube the vents the dryer OUT of the house. From the back of the dryer outside......THAT needs to be cleaned. It is actually a very serious house fire risk.

Do you clean out your dryer vent?
I was literally thinking about this last night, how we've been in our house 3 years now and the tube hasnt been cleaned. DH said he'll just change it but who knows when that will actually get done. How much does it cost to have someone come in and do it professionally?

DH just said he'll do the same thing this weekend. If I can get these kids to play nicely and quiet down I'm going to make some phone calls for pricing.

There are kits for this
I don't know how well they work, since I don't actually have a dryer, but I have seen them advertised.

Sears Home Services did it for me, I forget how much it was, maybe $50 in addition to what I was already having done (washer repair).

Re: Do you clean out your dryer vent?
My DH does it every year or so. He detaches the dryer hose and vacuums it out and then uses an attachment to get into the dryer.

Re: Do you clean out your dryer vent?
Ok. Please read this.
Everyone has a lint filter in your machine. Its the thing you clean EVERY time you do a dryer cycle.
Your dryer is vented to the outside of your house.
There is a hose (usually silver, looks like a vac cleaner hose) that goes from your dryer to the wall.
There is ALSO a hose of some kind that goes from the WALL to outside. (the "vented to the outside" comment above)
Lint CAN get trapped in that hose at ANY point. in the dryer, in the hose between the dryer and the wall, in the hose between the wall and the outside world..
That ENTIRE VENT needs to be professionally "cleaned" out. I do mine once a year. However there are only 2 of us living in the house. Its not like I'm doing 10 loads of laundry a week as if I had kids etc.
I believe the recommendation is every 2 years.
If you do NOT clean out that vent lint can build up. BEST case scenario it takes your clots longer and longer to dry. Worst case is that trapped lint CAN catch fire.
You should get it done professionally. The cost is around $100. You CAN buy a "home" kit...but my recommendation is hire someone who does this for a living.
