Absolutely NOT Long Island.

If it were, I'd want a refund on all of those NYC taxes I've been paying Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes, technically, they are a part of the same island. Personally, as a Queens girl, no way are they part of "the island!" However, as far as that company, I guess they have to draw the line somewhere, but I do think that price is exorbitant.

Oddly I don't count them as either.

To me "the city" is Manhattan.

Long Island is Nassau & Suffolk.

Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx are, for some strange reason, an entirely separate entity.

nope

even though on a map it may seem like they are, reality is that they're part of the 5 boroughs pf NYC

Re: Do you consider Queens and Brooklyn as part of Long Island?

I actually got into a masive argument with some random girl in college. I said "I'm not from Long Island" and she said "oh where are you from?" I said "Queens"
her: "That's long island"
"me:"no it isn't"
her: "it's on the same island"
me: "ok, geographically, it's on the island, but politically it is not the same region. Queens is part of NYC"
her: "no it isn't"
me: "Really, I didn't just vote for NYC mayor and I didn't go to NYC schools?"
her: "well it's not part of the city"
me: "umm where are you from?"
her: "blah blah something"
me: Where is that?"
her: near Happaugue
me: Oh, that's way out
her: what are you talking about?
me: well it's kind of far
her: no it isn't
me: to me it is
her: well I guess you never go anywhere
me: I go lots of places, there's just no good reason to go to Happauge (sorry Happaugue people. I just felt like pissing her off)
*she storms out*

It was actually a pretty heated argument..and I never saw her again. I actually have no idea what she was doing in our greenroom.

They are part of the city unless LI was to become its own country. Then they would be part of LI. Chat Icon

Geographically, yes. We are all on the same island surrounded by the same water. But if someone says I am from LI, I do not ask if they live in Brooklyn or Queens....

A lot of services charge extra to cross the queens border, not for the geography so much I think rather than the increased difficulty in driving/navigating around.

No, I don't consider Queens & Brooklyn as part of Long Island. To me that's like saying New Jersey is part of Pennsylvania because they are next to each other.

Re: Do you consider Queens and Brooklyn as part of Long Island?

I just had this conversation while in Chicago with my friend's family this past weekend.

Geographically, yes they are part of Long Island.

But culturally and politically they are not.

no, I definitely do not.

the 48 states are on one big landmass too. that is what the lines drawn on the map are for. to tell you were one land ends and another begins.

I am from Queens and geographically always considered Queens and Brooklyn part of Long Island - because it is.

But we would never actually associate ourselves with being from Long Island Chat Icon , and I could practically throw a stone and it be in Nassau Chat Icon

Re: Do you consider Queens and Brooklyn as part of Long Island?

I once read that Queens and Brooklyn (Kings), although on the actual "island', are not considered part of LI. LI is Nassau and Suffolk.

Re: Do you consider Queens and Brooklyn as part of Long Island?

LI to me is just Nassau and Suffolk. I consider Queens and Brooklyn as part of NYC, but when I say I'm going to the city I mean Manhattan. LI is not part of NYC, it's part of NY state.
