Do you do school work over the summer?

They are calling it activities and suggestions for summer review but I know what it is. When do you have time do it? I feel bad. My son who is going into first grade got a huge packet to do and my daughter is going into Kindergarten received some pages too. My daughter is really interested but my son not so much unless bribed with a toy. School just ended it feels like and I want him to have fun yet I don't want to be cramming work in him in August. He is going from an integrated into a general ed class, he loves to read, and will do the math facts. I know I should be practicing writing with him. Any suggestions so I dont feel guilty for pushing it on him?

DS reads every day, and I usually have him do a couple of math workbook pages. I got the workbooks in the dollar section of Target. I usually do it as no-screen time in the afternoon. We shut everything off and he sits quietly at the table. Two pages is all I have him do.

My oldest is going into 2nd grade. He received a HW packet & summer reading list from his new teacher on the last day of school. He also has to read an assigned book & do a book report. We have been doing about 30 minutes a day, plus he has to read for 30 minutes a day.

Dd is going into first and came home with a big packet although I don't think they check it or anything. She did a few pages some days while we were at the pool for her sister's swim lessons. I have to remember to have her do more when she has down time.

I have her read every day. My rule is if she doesn't read me one book during the day she has to do it at bedtime and then we will only read her one book or chapter instead of the normal two. This way it's usually not a fight for her to do it during the day. She's also doing the summer reading club at our library.

Same. Summers of childhood are beautiful and fleeting. If DC expressed interest in doing work, we'd do it, but it's not something I'd push on them.

Thank you! He does read to me every night or Ill read to him. We are practicing math facts when we can but I honestly want them to relax and have fun. Kids do so much work during the year.

I def. do school work over the summer. A few pages (2-5) in the workbooks, a couple of books read, and some other various learning activities 4-5 days a week.

No, but he reads on his own each day. He's not allowed devices after school/camp so he usually ends up reading while I'm cooking dinner. We read together at bedtime.

Yes, we picked out a big workbook at Bj’s so she does a couple pages here and there. She loves doing the math pages and learning to write script. She reads every day and we joined the Summer Reading program at our library so she keeps up with that every week.

Re: Do you do school work over the summer?

i'm one of those crazy moms who makes her kid do work over the summer.

he finished his assigned school work by 4th of july.

i make him read every day for at least 20 minutes.

i also have him working on his cub scout badges over the summer.

we do it early in the morning, so it's out of the way and we can enjoy our day. it's usually two pages per day max.
we read in the evening as a wind down before bed.

Re: Do you do school work over the summer?

There is actually work assigned over the summer?
I have never gotten anything like that for DD. Thank God.

There is an optional summer reading challenge every year- but it's optional.
No mandatory summer "homework"

Some districts are moving away from homework in elementary during the school year. Wonder what they would think of summer homework??

Yes he has work assigned. We still haven't started it. I have to get him on that this week. Thanks for the reminder.

Re: Do you do school work over the summer?

Our elementary school (2-4th grade) does a One Book, One School read over the summer, so both kids will be reading that book. They try to make it fun by having recordings of the book read by teachers and staff online. That's the only summer homework they have and I love that. In the K-1 school they had both reading and math packets they had to complete.

Right our MS has a summer reading project but its not due til a few weeks into school. They couldn’t mandate it to be due 1st day of school i guess.

Re: Do you do school work over the summer?

As part of my sons chore list to earn video game time he has to read 15 mins and do 3 pages from his brain quest book. I think it’s important to keep their skills up.

my son just finished 1st grade. they got a optional reading log for a "challenge".. so basically to log books or time they read over the summer. we read every night before bed, so thats easy- i just make sure i write down what he reads or i read to him. but its totally optional. also they also sent home an optional work packet with a bunch of pages of different skills, like some pages have a few math problems, or a simple writing prompt, or whatever. they take him usually less than 5 minutes a page, so i try to get him to do a page or 2 a day. i don't push it... but he likes to have something to do, and i'm at home with the kids, so it works Chat Icon other than that, we just relax.

That’s cool you do it in the summer, we do it as part of PARP.

My kids have been reading and my incoming first grader has been doing math workbooks but he enjoys it.

When my kids are school age, yes we will have them read at least 30 minutes a day. Other then that, it’s summer and it’s good for kids to have a break. We take vacations for a break as adults. If they are struggling in a particular content area then yes, I will have them practice the skills they learned the previous year for maintenance and to build fluency. Right now my kids are 18 months but we did participate in my library’s summer reading program and they got a ton of cool prizes and certificates to different places such as blowing, to get ice cream etc. right now they love to read and probably “read” well have me read obviously a good 10-15 books daily so I’m trying to keep their love of reading up!

Yes. D's is going into 2nd. We do 3 pages of the summer bridge book plus he has to read every day. It takes 15 minutes (not including reading) so t there is still plenty of time for fun.

Re: Do you do school work over the summer?

Of course, the summer slide is a real thing, so we spend 10 mins a day doing math, 10 mins free writing and at least 20 min reading, but I’d said my older 2 read for at least an hour, but that’s up to them.

If we are on vacation or have a very busy day, we forget about it, but they don’t mind doing the work, so it’s always been part of our summer routine.

Edited: bc I forgot to say, they work on this while I’m cooking dinner, and they read before bed. My younger 2, we incorporate it throughout the day since I have to be hands on. I wouldn’t force it though, if my kids felt overwhelmed or got upset that they had to do it, I’d forget about it. When I reread my post and saw I wrote “of course...” I rolled my eyes at myself, so I apologize for sounding like an ass Chat Icon
