Do You Have Your Child Get Their Flu Shot?
Yes, we all get it every year. DD is in daycare full time, I'm a high school teacher and interact with close to 100 kids everyday, and DH commutes to NYC and is riding in close quarters on the LIRR and the subways.

Re: Do You Have Your Child Get Their Flu Shot?
I did not get one for my DD. I remember when my son got it, he got really sick.

Yes. The one year I didn't do it my DS was hospitalized because he got sick. While I know it is likely a coincidence, I will always feel guilty about that and rather just get a shot for sanity's sake.

I'm curious why some of you choose to have your child get the shot, but not yourselves?

I have never had a flu shot in my life and never had the flu until last year where I think I may have had it because DH and DD both had it (tested positive) and i was sick around the same time. ( I didn't bother going to the dr since I would NEVER take Tamiflu and there's nothing they can do for it)
I am not a fan of doctors and avoid them at all costs. I have a severe medical phobia.
For DD- she was in daycare and I know the flu is VERY serious in infants. So she got her shot as soon as she was allowed it at 6 months.
For me, I am pretty sure I had the flu when DH and DD had it last year. I felt awful but nothing I couldn't handle with elderberry syrup and immune boosting supplements and rest and advil. In fact ,DH got Tamiflu from the dr and it didn't do anything. He was sicker than all of us. I truly believe in more natural remedies- not because I'm a healthy, organic, holistic person- but because I see how they work better than these big pharma drugs the doctors all push. Tamiflu was absolute shit and did nothing. Total scam.
So I never got the shot- and I don't see myself getting it until I'm older and at higher risk.
Right now I'm healthy and I don't feel I need it. If i get flu I deal with it And the shot doesn't even guarantee you wont' get it. DD got it last year even though she had her shot

Do You Have Your Child Get Their Flu Shot?
Yes, my kids and I all get flu shots. My DH is allergic to eggs and can not.
The first year DD and I got the flu shot, at my pediatricians strong suggestion, my DH got the flu and was sleeping 20 hours a day. I was newly pregnant with my son a the time. Glad I didn't play around that year.
The first time I didn't get my kids the flu shot after that, they both got the flu, as did my DH. I didn't catch it from them because I did get the flu shot. They give it out in my office so there's really no effort involved for me to get it.
From now on, I'll make sure I give my kids ONLY the shot and not the mist. The one time my kids took the mist, my DD got the flu anyway. She really didn't like breathing in the mist.
Hard lessons learned.

Because when DC were babies, I was pressured by my Dr to give it to them. Of course a doctor is going to recommend the shot, it's a liability if they tell you otherwise. The kids have had no reactions so far, thank goodness.
I will not get the flu shot because I was in high school when my mom got a flu shot for the first time ever (she never had a flu prior) & I saw an active mom, who never sat down, become a sick, weak mess for 2 months. Maybe a coincidence but I think not & it was a scary sight.

Re: Do You Have Your Child Get Their Flu Shot?
I had never gotten a flu shot up until almost 3 years ago. We all got the flu Christmas Eve morning and were sick in bed for a week - straight through the New Year.
I have never experienced anything like that - it was awful. Thank GOD both my children DID get the flu shots because DS was in Nursery school and it was required and DD was a 1 year old and I was 'guilted' into giving it to her. Otherwise, I can't imagine having them suffer even more than they did without some resistance to it.
DD got it last year, but I was late in giving it to her because she was sick with fevers the weeks leading into her appointments (had to cancel twice before I was able to take her in). She ended up getting the bird flu a week later.
Now we all just get it - we both work in the city and are around large groups all day long, DS is in school - too many scenarios where one of us could bring it home and knock us all out again.

This year (not sure if its a permanent change), the mist is not being offered. The CDC did studies last year and found that the mist was found to be no different in terms of effectiveness than not getting vaccinated at all. Only shots now.

Do You Have Your Child Get Their Flu Shot?
Nope for the whole family. She never has and never will. Both of us survived H1N1 and meh. Sure we were sick, big deal. We pay attention to our health and our bodies. We have no underlying conditions to require it.
However, I encourage others to take it if it makes them comfortable, if they are sickly, if they have underlying conditions, generally get sick, don't recover quickly from flu/colds, etc.

Good to know!
She was diagnosed with the flu that year on the morning of her birthday party (which of course I immediately canceled). It wasn't fun, and I immediately remembered how she turned her face away from it.
