Do you keep personal info. on your work computer?

I keep a spreadsheet on my work computer where I keep track of my bills. Same one I have at home. Sometimes I update it on my lunch break. Apparently today my boss told me he looked at it and he hopes I'm not working on my personal stuff while at work. He said "it's so pretty with the colors and all...." Chat Icon

I understand it is a work computer, obviously a computer he owns, but I feel such an invasion of privacy since it's in a folder marked with my name and labeled "My Bills".

I already deleted the file.

No because I would expect that they tap into my computer. I'm sure it's not true for every company out there but the ones that I've worked for, always spied.

Wow--what an invasion of privacy! He could have at least ASKED if he felt you were doing personal work on his time.

I had my wedding guest list on my work computer to keep track of RSVP's but had it password protected.

I have some pictures, excel sheets with party rvsp's, and some friends and family resumes from employee referrals.

Nothing with any real personal info.

I have folder on my desktop with some personal stuff. I have one budget spreadsheet that is password protected. I never keep anything personal on the network drives - it's too easy for several people to access.

I do, but would never put it on a network so others could see it.

Re: Do you keep personal info. on your work computer?

Firstly, my boss has no idea how to access the shared documents on our server.
Not to toot my own horn but at my current job, with a staff of 8 employees I am the most tech literate.
I do have a folder on my desktop with some personal documents as well as a backup of my IPhone. I was having issues with my home computer & had to update on my work computer once. I asked my boss if it was okay, he had no idea what I was talking about but he said it was fine.
I also have a file folder in my desk draw with photo copies of other important documents that I keep on hand in the office. After getting married I took care of all name change items from work.

It's NOT on the network.

He literally sat at my desk, turned on my computer and had to open up 3 different folders (go into my documents, etc.) to find it and view it. I even always delete it from my recently viewed documents when I leave.

IMO, it's not really an invasion or privacy, since it's a work computer.

I do keep personal things (like pictures) on my work comp but I have no reasonable expectation of privacy since it's a work and not personal comp.

Yes I have files on my work desktop saved in folder and some personal e-mails.

Most of the world works from 9-5 so if it things that I know I need to read immediately I have them send it to my work account (then it goes to my BB too so I always have access).

At my job our bosses know that we need to handle some personal stuff during the day (they do too) so as long as we are getting our work done its not a big deal.

I do see this point. But I have been working here for almost 3 1/2 years. I am a very honest person and if he asked if I didn't anything personal at work, I would have told him.

I agree. Even if it's saved on your desktop and not on the network.

I'd be annoyed if he drilled down into the folders, but in all honesty, I shouldn't have that stuff out there where other people can see/find it.

I do have some peronal things on my computer...a few pictures mostly, but nothing that I'd feel voilated over if anyone were to see them.

I do have my personal stuff on my computer because I bring my laptop home with me. I have a personal external hard drive that I keep at work also.

I agree that while it's a work computer & your boss has a right to see what is on there, having something in a personal folder to does make it a violation of your privacy (maybe not legally but ethically).

When we're terminating someone, we ask them if there are personal files they want to get off their computer & have them work with the Computer Helpdesk to have them transferred.

Given that he's shown he has no qualms about going through your computer, don't keep anything on there - OR keep it password protected (I can walk you through if you don't know how). I hope I'm not coming off as paranoid but I would also take his actions as possibly targeting you so I'd watch my step.

although it IS his computer, this just doesn't sit right with me.

to answer your original question: i do have a few pictures and my christmas list on my work computer. oh, i also have a school assignment or two. they are all in a folder marked with my name, on my desktop. nothing really important or private

I do think that its very strange that he went through your computer purposely looking to see what personal stuff you had on there without asking you. Not sure what his purpose was?

I already deleted it. I'll put it on a memory stick if I have to and update it that way but not save it on the computer anymore.

I've been here 3 1/2 years, I just think it's shady. He should respect me more than that.

Similar situation for me. I work on a laptop provided to me by the company but it's basically 'mine.' I take it home and everywhere I go and there's not much opportunity for anyone to really get into it, but it IS my employer's property so I can't really complain if they were to look at what's on it.

It would be annoying if they were just looking around on it for no apparent reason though.

Re: Do you keep personal info. on your work computer?

After having to go through a coworker's computer files after he was unexpectedly laid off, and finding things that ranged from personal emails about VERY sensitive family matters that I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted anyone at work to know about, to a mortgage refinance application that included pdf's of his and his wife's driver's licenses, social security cards, bank statements, and W2s... I am now hypervigilant not to save anything personal on my work computer.

While I agree that it's his right to look at you PC and that you should have no expectation of privacy, I think any manager worth their salt should talk to you about concerns before they go on a fishing expedition.

I would be on watch.
