Yes. We went and picked it out together after we got engaged. We got engaged in Disney World in front of the castle and at the time, he proposed with a rhinestone Minnie Mouse ring he bought on Main Street. 
DW's initial engagement ring costs 25 cents, from a vending machine, and she knew I did that....  We ordered her ring (not a diamond, since she doesn't like diamonds, and not very expensive at all), but I didn't have it yet, and I wanted to propose, so I just picked up a symbolic ring in the meantime....

Yes, and No.
The diamond was from his mother. It was her diamond when she got engaged. When she upgraded they gave him the diamond for me.
I know how much he spent on the setting, and I have the appraisal from the jewler for insurance.
So yes, I know how much its worth as far as appraisal is concerned.

I asked him flat out a few days after the shock wore off and he told me without hesitation. I also know the appraisal value.

Sorry to hijack but should I get mine appraised? If so, what for, insurance purposes?
To answer the question, other, because it's a family heirloom diamond. It's an old European cut diamond that's been in my dads family for many years. After he died, I sold his wedding band and some other pieces for the band and had the diamond put in. There were 2 other family diamonds that my sister and I had made into necklaces so that we can always wear a reminder of him everyday.
Typically if it's a new ring then yes. The selling jewler typically gives you an apprisal but of course they are going to appriase it higher then it might be. Also, sometimes those appraisals won't hold up if an insurance claim is put in for it. It even says on the forms many times, in small print, that this form isn't good enough for insurance purposes.
Over the summer I had my e-ring and wedding band appraised by a jewelry appraiser (doesn't sell) and it was appraised higher then what the original one said. I also went a step further and had it insured through a private company instead of just having it on my renters insurance or home insurance.
As far as heirloom pieces go, I'd have it appraised just to find out the new worth of it.

I have an estimate but not the actual amount. He has connections with people that sell jewelry so I know he got a decent discount.
Me too. We have an actuary in the diamond district in our family.

yes. it cost 4,200. and we have the appraisal for 7,000.
we got it at the jewelry store I use to work at, and I picked it out with him.

I had to get it appraised for insurance purposes. I have no clue what he actually paid. I do know that he sold his Audi to buy it , and now everytime one passes, he STILL cringes and i pop my ring finger in his face and say "beep beep honk honk" He loved that sports car

LoL Very funny bc DH says I'm wearing the Boat he wanted to buy! Hahahahahaha
So I say we can go sit on the beach and stare at my diamond if it makes him feel better - he didn't find that funny
