Do you live in a town you love ?
I know this has been asked 9889889 times, but I would really like to hear what towns you guys love.
We are starting to house hunt again. We are in no rush, just want to be settled in the next 2-3 years. (for school) We are not too familiar with LI so suggestions are very much appreciated ! So far we have been checking out Glenwood Landing, Glen Head, Sea Cliff, oh and DH loves Bayville, he likes the idea of living on the water, but I nixed it. Too out of the way.
-Priority Numero Uno is School District
-I would like the commute by car to be under 45min. Nassau def. ( I will be a SAHM, DH works all over BK and NYC...i would like to see DH for more than 15min a night)
-Budget 500-550K, taxes around 10K
-Working class, child friendly, sense of community
-Everything else is negotiable
Anyone?
Thanks

Re: Do you live in a town you love ?
I love our town - I'm in Sayville.
It's got a great heart - wonderful downtown area, lots of activities for families (festivals, Family Fridays in the Park and other things like free yoga and tai chi in the park, movies and musical events).
Small enough that you always seem to know someone everytime you walk downtown - large enough that they aren't all up in your business. Lovely school district with administrators and teachers who actually seem to care about the kids they work with.
A beautiful library, a fantastic little marina/beach, great access to Fire Island, a good solid middle class neighborhood with people who really take pride in their homes - and it shows.
I feel very blessed to be here.

I second Sayville. I work in Sayville and was looking to live there, however the more time I spend there the more I realize its not a good idea for ME. As a phys ed teacher in the district who has work in 2 out of the 3 elementary schools and the middle school I can not go anywhere without being stopped like every 20 minutes! LOL I need a private life. If it wasnt for that I would be all over sayville and west sayville!

Re: Do you live in a town you love ?
I just googled Sayville, that would be at least 2 hrs from midtown. With traffic everyday
Looking for something in Nassau. I should have been more clear. Thanks for responding tho!!

Re: Do you live in a town you love ?
I love my town but its not perfect. its Lindenhurst village and honestly i think its a great mix of everything. Fares, stores, restaurants, free music on saturdays at the square, parks, beach, not expensive - school i think are fine. Close to the city but not sure on a drive. Train is about 45min/hour

Oh yeah - if you are traveling into the city by car it's probably not the most ideal situation! Lots of our neighbors do it.. most take the train .. but it's definitely a long commute!
I wish I could give you advice about Nassau but I have never lived there! Good luck!!

I think Glen Head is a great option. My coworker lives there and loves it!
But on DH's side, we used to live by John Bowne Park in North Flushing/Auburndale, Queens and LOVE it!

My dad and husband both worked Manhattan and lived further out east. My dad took the train out of Ronkonkoma and loved it. Does he have that option or does he need a car in the city?

Re: Do you live in a town you love ?
If you have 500-550k to spend... I would look central Nassau. Syosset, Old Bethpage, Plainview, Woodbury, etc.
I'd try to get into Syosset though for that price range as you would be buying low into that zip code which is what you want. Taxes will be over 10k though so you might have to make concessions with that. But you would be in a zip that has houses in the 500-750k and up range.

Love the Glen Head, Glenwoo0d Landing, Sea Cliff area. We ended up a little further east, but still in Nassau. We do love where we live, and eventually have plans to upgrade, but not for some time. I think Sea Cliff is high on our list... my parents just moved there last summer and I absolutely love the area. North Shore school district is very good too.

We just bought in N. Bellmore and love the area!!! All our neighbors are so friendly, close to the parkways, not too far from the city, great schools, a real sense of community. You could easily find something in your price range there. The surrounding towns are great options also...North Merrick and Bellmore.

Same. We just bought a house in N.Bellmore (I grew up here so I am clearly biased). I love the town, the commute is pretty good. Very good schools.

Yes I do but we are in Queens, Whitestone. Commute is awesome to the city and you have the best of both worlds "suburban" feel but urban enough to get you where you need to be quickly. Schools are also great.

Re: Do you live in a town you love ?
Floral Park Village...It's a beautiful town and very close knit community. We have our own sanitation, pool and police. It's a perfect area to raise a family and the school district is great. My dh works in Bronx and Manhattan and I work in Queens. It takes me 30 minutes without traffic to get to work. I love it here.

Re: Do you live in a town you love ?
I live in N. Bellmore, like some of the previous posters, and I agree it's a great community. I used to commute to the city -- it's 43 minutes to Penn on the train (can get express trains) and with no traffic, can be even shorter by car (35-40 minutes). My DH commutes to Long Island City (which is right before the bridge) and it usually takes him about 50 minutes to an hour in rush hour traffic.
My real estate office is in N. Bellmore, too, so I do most of my work in Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh. I grew up in Seaford, so I know this area inside and out. You could get a great house in your price range in these areas. Taxes average around $11K without the STAR exemption, but there are plenty of houses with taxes in the $9-10K range.
Please let me know if I can help you with your house hunt at all. Once you decide what areas you are considering, I could set you up with a listingbook account, if you don't already have one. Also, if you have questions about N. Bellmore or any of the surrounding towns, please feel free to contact me anytime!

Ditto this. I'd add East Meadow and Rockville Center to this list. RVC's taxes are higher than what you're looking for, but the town is great. Lots of great restaurants and shopping.
eta: EM doesn't have a train station, but the Merrick, Bellmore, or Hicksville stations are an easy ride.

Re: Do you live in a town you love ?
I think Lynbrook would be perfect for you. Great school district, charming houses in your price range, nice "village" community feel, closer to the city.
Also check Rockville Centre but you might have to look for a while to find something in the mid-$500's.

I'm also part of the South Shore Nassau crew on here, and highly recommend this area.
We are in North Bellmore and it has all of your requirements. Both DH and I commute into Manhattan and its 45 mins on the LIRR Babylon line.
Merrick, RVC, Massapequa, Wantagh, Seaford all fit into what you're looking for. Your DH may LOVE Seaford, bc its also right on the water.
