Re: Do you personally know someone who has gotten a DWI?
Also, I know 3 people that drink and drive. One is an older man that is friends of friends - he claims he drives BETTER when he drinks. I've always said he's lucky he hasn't killed anyone. The other two will have a few drinks at dinner, even drinking right before the bill is paid, and will drive home, I've heard. One of them we go out to dinner with and if he drinks, I ALWAYS tell him he better have only one since he's driving home and always give him a hard time. No one else at the table ever says anything or even backs me up which drives me crazy, but if I have to say it every time we see him, I will.

Re: Do you personally know someone who has gotten a DWI?
Yes, 2 of my friends have gotten a DUI and before I was born my uncle was killed in a drunk driving accident. He was drunk, but not driving. The driver of his car was drunk, they were 17.

Gotten a DUI/DWI, no, never.
Know someone? Yes, several. I'm sure there are more than the people I know but they don't talk about it.
As for accidents, yes far too many. I know someone that was killed in a drunken bar fight - head injury.
A relative of mine was in a car accident, flipped her car & broke every vertabrae except the top 2 (she can walk).

It seems like the drivers always live I am sorry for your loss !
Not always. Someone I know from HS was drinking, flipped his jeep & was decapitated.
I'm sure there are more but that's off the top of my head.
I wish cars came with breathalyzers installed. Drinking impairs your judgment so most people think they're fine when they're not.
The drunken bar fight, was that not someone from HS, too? As for the flipped jeep, I know who that was but I don't think I ever knew he was drinking.
I'll take a moment here to remind everyone that my husband was on a jetski and was hit by a drunk boater. The person he was with got hurt.

Yes - the bar fight was a HS friend also. His sister was killed months before in a car accident but I dont' believe drinking was involved in that - just an inexperienced driver like the Centerport Road teen from last weekend.

Re: Do you personally know someone who has gotten a DWI?
me? never. ever. not even close.
others? TONS!!! DH is in the restaurant business. Managers, employees...so many have DWIs.
He is constantly writing letters to courts to ask for the driver to be allowed to drive to work and back. He has been asked quite often to breathe into someone's car for them as well...he would never.
I think I know so many down here, that I live in fear of 485 at night.

I might be the minority here but I think there is a difference between having a couple of drinks and driving and getting trashed and driving.
If people go out to dinner and drink a couple of glasses of wine, unless they weigh 100 lbs. soaking wet, they will be ok to drive IMO.
I think it is all about knowing your limit. Knowing when your judgement is off.

Yes, this person license was even revoke for DWI & DUI.. I met this person after all this and just got his license back. He had to use a breathlaiser (sp?) to be able to turn on his car.

I don't necessarily agree with this. The whole point is that being impaired renders your judgment about whether you're impaired or not off. There is such a fine line between slightly over the limit and slightly under it that 1) it's easier to misjudge--especially if you are over; and 2) even if you don't misjudge, it's not the best idea to skirt that line so closely. It may not be illegal to drive close to the line, but why be impaired at all?
IMO, the margin of error you have to leave is gigantic and all that's at stake if you're off--both in terms of the legal ramifications and what could happen to innocent people--is too high.
Not worth it.

I am not advocating drinking and driving. I understand that people drink way too much and get behind the wheel. I know people who have died in drunk driving accidents. But I do think people can have a few drinks and not be impaired and not put themselves or anyone else at risk.
I go to family/friends parties all the time where alcohol is served. People post on here constantly asking what type of alcohol or how much they should serve at their DC's party or about having an open bar at their DC's party. Obviously people are going to drink and drive home, sometimes with their kids in the car.
More people than are willing to admit have in the past had drinks and drove and/or currently still do it. I believe responsible drinkers know they can have 2 beers and drive home safely or a couple of martinis and drive home safely.
ETA: I know drinking and driving is still legal in some states. Is it still legal in NY? I thought it was but now I am thinking not.
If it isn't legal, than why do they allow a certain amount of alcohol in your system before being illegal, KWIM?? Meaning if you drink one beer and get pulled over and blow under a .08% you wouldnt be arrested??? I should ask my husband. He would know.

Re: Do you personally know someone who has gotten a DWI?
Yes. About 25 years ago, my aunt was drinking and driving. She had her husband and 3 of her kids in the car. Her husband was drunk too. She ran into a telephone pole. She was slightly injured, the kids had broken bones and her husband ended up in a coma with brain damage. They divorced later on, he recovered and they both lost the kids. My cousins were raised by foster parents and were taken away from each other as well as their parents.
I was a child when all this happened but I remember the violent argument between my aunt and her in-laws in the hospital lobby. I will never drink and drive. I saw what it did to my extended family.
My aunt has been clean and sober since that day.

I know you're not advocating d&d, and I actually agree with a lot of what you wrote.
My point is that a lot of people don't draw the line for themselves responsibly, and I don't think the line always need be drawn right where the law draws it. That's all. I actually agree that things people write on here reveal that people have afew drinks and get behind the wheel often. I am just not so sure how many are responsible drinkers.
I'd advocate for ultra responsible drinking where you err on the side of consuming much less than you're permitted by law.

Re: Do you personally know someone who has gotten a DWI?
Yes,
He got 3 DWIs and the last one was shortly after his 2nd. He still had a cast on his hand from injuries in that accident when, in the 3rd accident, he killed our mutual friend. Edwin died while wrapped up between the car door and a telephone pole. His parents were able to say goodbye and say I love you before he finally just died from blood loss on the scene.
My drunk idiot friend was able to smash the windshield and crawl out to get help. Edwin was crushed by the pole they hit. My other friend in the back seat had both legs crushed and his face cut from the temple, behind his ear and down his throat.
All during Christmas break my senior year.
It has forever affected my view on drinking and driving.
