Wow! I can't believe it's been 5 years already.

I was at work. We just got the kids all settled down after returning from a field trip ( I was working with elementary school aged kids in a center).
My shift was about to end and the alarms started going off in the building.
Loud beeps!
Parents coming in, telling us what was going on. We thought maybe there was an accident nearby or something.

I was allowed to leave and headed over to my parents. No way was I going from Huntington to Lake Grove.
Got to my parents and started freaking because I couldn't find DH anywhere. Not at work, wasn't answering his cell, etc.
A while later, he showed up at my parents figuring that's where I was.

I honeslty thought it was another attack.Chat Icon

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...

I was at the Miracle Mile in Crate and Barrel when the lights went out. They didn't want to let us out, they told everyone to get to the middle of the store. I started to pretty much cry. I thought it was another terrorist act to be honest. So in my panic, I couldn't even leave b/c my car ran out of gas and the gas stations weren't working. I had to wait hours for someone to come pick me up. I sat in Escada for like 5 hours to escape the sun since it was so hot out and I couldn't even buy a water somewhere. It was torture feeling so trapped!!!

DH walked over the Brooklyn bridge from Manhattan. I didn't finally see him until about 830 at night. I recall sleeping like dogs on the floor to escape the terrible heat. Then the next am we lit the burners on our stove, and cooked all the food in our fridge b/c it was bound to go bad. We ate loads of bacon and eggs on one of the hottest mornings! I also recall cooking frozen pizza and DH eating ice cream. We ate like slobs just b/c we were bored and didn't want to food to go bad! It is funny when I look back now at all of it....we always talk about how we ate all that food.

I got mandated to stay at work on the ambulance. We had to go around town and bring all of the patients that were on home ventilators to the hospital so their batteries didnt die on them. at home.

I was laying out in my parents backyard and I remember it being VERY quiet outside and I couldn't hear the AC on anymore, I freaked out thinking we were getting attacked again.

Yes- I was working in downtown manhattan at the WFC and had to walk up to the 59th street bridge and then aways into queens. I left work around 4:30 and didn't get home until almost 11:30 Chat Icon
My parents happened to be in Queens that day and waited for me in a parking lot along Queens Blvd- I met them finally and they drove me back to my apartment- there were no traffic lights- it was a scary ride home and SO hot... Chat Icon UGH- it was awful......

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...

I was in a bathroom at a club in Australia when a girl came running in and said that terroists hit NY again and that they took away all the electricity. I was already living here in LA but my whole family was back in NYC. My friend and I frantically ran out of the club to find a TV with more information. I was terrified for my family and never felt more scared or alone being so far away.

What is amazing is that I totally forgot about that whole incident until you just asked the question- so weird that I blocked it out.Chat Icon

ETA: SO much has happened since then- I didn't even MEET DH until a month later. Chat Icon

I was at work until 4ish, then went and hung at my mother's for a while to avoid all the traffic on the LIE (it was at a standstill), went home around 8 p.m., started BBQing and the lights came back.Chat Icon

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...

I worked in NYC that summer and lived with my parents on LI. My job ended and I had a few days off before I started my 3rd year of law school. I met a friend for lunch in NYC. I planned to go back to LI and pack up. The subways were slow and I just missed a train to RVC. I later found out that the train got stuck near Lynbrook. The next train wasn't for at least 30 minutes so I waited in Penn Station. As that train was pulling into the station, the power went out. I had no idea what was happening. Eventually, we were told we had to evacuate Penn Station. I couldn't use my cell phone. I thought there was just a power outage in midtown.

Two of my closest friends lived right near each other on the east side. I decided to walk towards their apartments. As I was walking, I heard a radio report that power was out all over. I eventually got to a pay phone and called my parents to let them know where I was going.

Luckily, one of my friends was home. There were at least 10 of us who stayed in her studio apartment that night. We had ice cream and lit a bunch of candles.

The next day, we couldn't get a bus or cab so we walked to the 59th street bridge. We met my friend's dad in Queens and he drove us to RVC.

I was working in mid-town...once we got word that it was a power out I headed towards the express buses on 6th Avenue but they were a nightmare to get on...so I walked...to the 59th Street bridge....over...down Queens Blvd and finally stopped at theQueens Center Mall because I couldn't go any further I was so tired.

Before I could even sit I saw my DH's car (BF at the time) he had a 2-door Celica...doors open and 5 people come out Chat Icon He was waiting for me at the bridge but got the call from his mom that I was heading towards the mall...so he told the strangers around him that he was heading to the mall and would give whoever could fit in his car a ride. He had 4 people but saw a pregnant woman and made the front passenger get in the back so he could give her a ride Chat Icon

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...

I was in my office in Dobbs Ferry. All of sudden the lights dimmed and we heard a big humming/whirring noise and all the power went out. Thinking it was just our block, I called my then boyfriend (who is now my DH) and he said, "Babe our lights all just went out!" (He was out here on Long Island, I again, was up in Westchester.) Then I got nervous, thinking it was a bombing somwehere. My co-worker and I closed up the office and went home with no traffic lights, to the Bronx. That evening I was getting stir crazy in my apt. so I walked over to my friends house a few blocks away. We found one Chinese restaurant open and got some food and ate it outside of her building. The sun was going down and I started to walk home, idiot I am not realizing that at night it will be pitch BLACK OUT! It was so scary walking home in complete darkness, I had to use my cell for light. And once in a few minutes the headlights from a passing car helped me. I got home, lit some candles and went to bed. I had power 24 hours later.

i was swimming in my friends pool (ahh the joys of still being in college & on summer vaca)

so i walk into her house & the TV randomly shuts off & i'm like "Umm i think your TV is possessed or something - it just shut off" and my friend was like "Oh the power probably randomly went out - no biggie"

so then we continued to float in her pool for like the next 2 hours until her dad came home and was like "So do you guys know that there is like a major power outage going on on the east coast?!?"

i couldnt beleive that we just continued to float around for like 2 hours not knowing anything that was going on lol Chat Icon

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...

I was at work. It was a small office so I remember everyone walking outside to their cars and listening to the news report on car radios to find out what happened.

Once we had an idea of what happened we all left to go home.

My husband (BF at that time) and I were packing to go away to the outer banks that night. I did it by candle light, I remember lighting so many candles that it was as bright as if I had a light on, except it was SO hot!!!!

I will say this much, the following morning we left around 4am and the roads were EMPTY!!! I've never seen the Belt Parkway with like only 2 other cars around us.

It was surreal.

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...

For some reason I was home and not at work... it was HOT and I was in my parents room watching (I'm ashamed to admit it) Aladdin and just as it was ending it started browning out. Then the lights went out completely... my mom panicked so we went up to the grocery store and bought TONS of ice!! Then we walked over to our family friends house and hung out there until late that night. By the time we got back, lights were back on. FH (BF at the time) was freaking out because he couldn't get in touch with me (he lived upstate at the time) and was worrying that we weren't ok. Ahhh the memories.

I was living and working in Brooklyn and was at work when they went out. My apartment was about 4 miles away, and I walked home. Not so bad. I remember a lot of people were out directing traffic on their own.

DH and I were dating and he was out on the island. I was concerned about him--it took him a long time to get home.

Has it really been 5 years?! Where does the time go?

DH & I were dating, and he came to see me. I remember being at work and everyone was totally spooked.
