Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
I was on vacation at home and was wondering why everything went out. DH (Fh then) left work because he could not do anything and came to my house to just sit in the pool and BBQ for the 1 1/2 days. It was too hot out to be inside. I had the adventure of going to pick up my lil sis from work and dodging bad inconsiderate drivers. Boy was that fun.

I was working. At the time I worked in Hauppauge in a basement office-so it was black-and i was there all alone. So I walked out into the hallway and the guy that had the office next to mine said here, take my hand I'll take you upstairs. We got upstairs and I said see ya and drove home. My DH(boyfriend then) had just bought our own house. My frined came over and we drank beers-I actually had a phone with a cord so we were trying to call all sorts of people but no calls would go through because everyone had a cordless phone

It was our 4 year 'dating' anniversary. We got engaged the next day after poor DH scrambled to change our plans since he planned the whole next night in the city.
I worked at a daycare and we took the babies out for a walk... when we came back there was no power. I made a terrifying drive home... and them my mom and I just sat in the dark... My step-father works at Stony Brook Hospital and was hand pumping machines since the generators went out. And he had all the flashlights hidden in the basement

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
I was at home with my brothers and sisters. We honestly thought my mom didn't pay the electric bill. She had a HORRIBLE day at work and should have been getting ready to leave. We were trying to find the electric bill so we could pay it and she wouldn't have to come home to that! I don't know why we thought she didn't pay it. That made no sense. Then my boyfriend (now Dh) called me from work to tell me what was going on.
I had a great thing planned for our 6 month anniversary. Dinner and a show. (the next day) He lived in NYC and I couldn't get in there. Plus we weren't sure if the show would go on. They said it will if the lights went on. So when the tunnel opened I drove in. The lights came on just before show time. We ate a place that had gas and put out the food in chafing dishes on the sidewalk. We had wine in a poland spring bottle, and ate on the sidewalk at a table. Then we went to the play. IT WAS THE BEST, MOST FUN NIGHT EVER!!!

I remember I was driving home from working at camp and couldn't figure out why all of the street lights were out and the radio wasn't working. I remember it was hot as hell and then we were worried because we couldn't get in contact with my Grandma but my brother checked on her and she was fine.

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
I was working a temp job and the wonderful temp agency forgot to call me to tell me I was no longer needed. So I showed up to the office in the city and the boss looked at me like I was a tresspasser or something and had a fit that I was at the desk ready to work. About 10 minutes after I was at my desk my cell phone rings and its' the temp agency telling me oh yea we forgot to call you, you can go home.
So I left and went home. I was so ticked that I decided to treat myself to an iced coffee. When the ligths went out I was just walking out of DD.

WoW! That was 5 years ago??? Crazy!! I was still just a temp at my last job. I caught the last bus leaving the city that day (Going into SI). I think I was the only one who actually made it in the next day. The city was completely shut down.
I cant believe that was 5 years ago!

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
I was at work.. i remember calling my dad he telling me that they did not have lights either.. I walked to grand central and waited like all the other crazy people thinking we were getting on a train. I finally got in touch with my SIL who lives on the UES and I walked with 3 woman from the post office to her block and she met me with a flashlight and we ate peanut butter on english muffins and listened to the radio all night and we were sweating...
I rememeber all the people sitting in the outside resturants eating shrimp and everything that was going to get bad ... and people charging $8 for a bottle of water...
think of all the babies that were conceived this day 5 years ago....
Also Dh actually picked up 3 people from the train station who could not get home he ttok the chance thinking I got on a train.. He actually broke my 010101 snow globe when he did not pay attention to what he ran into in the dark

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
I was working downtown in NYC. I was on the phone with my brother when the lights when out in my office. It was weird because I didn't have a window and I had to go out into the hall for some light.
We all walked down 14 flights of stairs and then I walked from Hudson and King up somewhere in the 60's to get a bus. One of my coworkers was heading to Queens because her daughter lived there so I took the bus to Queens with her and then my dad and DH drove to pick me up there. I didn't get home until 11:30 PM. I was sweaty and exhausted.
My office was closed the next day, too.

I was pregnant with my son. I left work about 4:30 and people were crazy, driving over the grass. I got home and our electricity came back on in about 2 hours.

Yes! We were on vacation in Montauk and TOTALLY unprepared for anything like this! But we went down to the beach, built a bonfire and made the best of it. I remember being really freaked out only because JT was living in MA at the time, and I was worried about him, but it turned out that it didn't affect him, anyway.

Working! It was the day before the MCAT and none of our students wanted to leave, they were all studying. We stayed there until 7pm. Went home and our second floor apartment was so hot, we had to sleep at my in-laws. I had a wedding dress fitting the next day and DH was in a wedding party that Saturday. We didn't get power until 5pm Friday.

Re: Do you remember what you were doing 5 years ago today...
When it happened, I was at work about 4 blocks away from home. I picked up my 80 year old grandma, drove home, had a BBQ with my family and drank margaritas. Later when I sobered up I drove to Oceanside to see my BF (now DH) who had AC and spent the night there!

We moved into our house that day. We were sitting there saying "WT F did we buy?" and then we found out it wasn't just us LOL Of course I had no idea where flashlights or candles were but a neighbor gave me some candles. My oldest son was 10 months old and we let him take a bath in a big bucket in the hallway to keep cool.

DH and I were in the city. I had an interview .We were going to stay, and have lunch, see a movie, but decided to head home instead. 2 hours after getting home it happened. After hearing the horror stories of people being stuck in the city, and having to walk home, we were so glad we made that decision.
