Re: Do you serve alcohol at an afternoon first bday party?
At the restaurant we chose for our children's first birthdays, we did unlimited beer and wine. We did run a tab if anyone wanted anything harder.

Re: Do you serve alcohol at an afternoon first bday party?
I'm not doing alcohol. My party is starting at 12:30 and, to be honest, its a kids party. I'm having an entertainment party come. I don't think drinking is necessary. I'm sure I'll get flamed, but its a 3 hour party. And I need to sign all kinds of forms if I do want to bring alcohol at the place I rented. The woman renting me the room looked at me like I had 3 heads when I asked about alcohol.
If it was in my yard, definitely. But most of the adults, outside of family, are coming because they have kids. So my 1st birthday party will be a dry one.

Re: Do you serve alcohol at an afternoon first bday party?
I did beer and an alcoholic punch. I don't think it's 'expected' and I don't know if it is the norm... it's just what I felt was right for that celebration. However.. if I had to pay as much as you are being quoted for the alcohol it would NOT have happened.

Re: Do you serve alcohol at an afternoon first bday party?
Too many alcoholics in our family. So for my 1yr old the answer would have been no (in Texas).
I’m not being funny or rude about the term either, we have all out drunks. I never offer it if family will be there. Its not about letting loose, its about my child. If you want beer, bring it yourself cause I won’t offer any. Since this place doesn’t allow outside alcohol well then so sorry, so sad. Meet up at the bar with the others if you want to drink.
I’m very capable of having a great time with family and friends without alcohol.
That said, of course, I’ve been to backyard parties with the same group with beer aplenty. I’ve even bought the obligatory bottle of wine for the hostess. They try to pour it down my throat and say I have time before I drive.. whatever. Its not my cup of tea. They don’t go ‘crazy’ while I’m around, but that’s because I leave well before those signs start to show.
So only because my family is utterly useless and stupid, I’d say no.
Oddly enough, if I was in NY, I’d say sure give them Beer and Wine. So I guess it just depends on the group.

Re: Do you serve alcohol at an afternoon first bday party?
In your case (and in many other situations), it's not necessary IMO. For us, we are doing a party at home with mostly adults, 5 babies and 3 kids. So yes, I will have a full bar but I also expect the party to go on long after the kiddos are asleep.

Re: Do you serve alcohol at an afternoon first bday party?
We just had my DD's 1st birthday party at the house and served beer and wine. Not a singe person touched the wine but the beer went.

Re: Do you serve alcohol at an afternoon first bday party?
We recently had DS's 1st bday party. Started at 1pm - we offered beer, wine and a lemonade "sparkler" made with prosecco.

Re: Do you serve alcohol at an afternoon first bday party?
In your case I would not. We went to a backyard 4th bday party recently that had no alcahol. Honestly I didn't miss it, though I think DH did, as he was the one who pointed it out to me - lol

Re: Do you serve alcohol at an afternoon first bday party?
Normally, I'd say beer and wine, yes. But the firehouse I'm having it at strongly suggests NO alcohol of any kind. So, soda for us. I'm not happy about it, but what am I going to do?

Re: Do you serve alcohol at an afternoon first bday party?
With my family and DH's family, we would have to. For DD's christening, which was at a restaurant, we just did beer and wine as part of our per person cost and some people still ordered mixed drinks that we had to pay for - only a few but enough to be irritating, esp at $14 a pop (we're in Manhattan). It was a luncheon and it wasn't offered - I think it's rude to still order but that's just me.
Anyway, if you can't add beer and wine at a reasonable per person cost - I'd skip it - it's not necessary for a child's birthday and there will be some who abuse it. Alternatively, have a cash bar and make them pay for their own drinks - I would not be offended as a guest, it's a kid's birthday, not a wedding, get drunk on your own dime.
