Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
We are still trying to figure out a floor plan and I mentioned to DH about moving the sink away from the window and possibly doing it caddy corner even though that wouldn't be my first choice or one side of a U shaped kitchen. We have met we a few different kitchen designers and nobody mentioned it. It would make plumbing a lot easier.
Right now I have the sink under the window and I always keep the blinds closed because the sun comes in, in the afternoon and when I wash the dishes the sun is right in my eyes.
Do you think it would look weird?

no when my parents redid their kitchen they moved their sink to a corner a couple of feet away from the window. it looks perfect. underneath the window is usable counterspace now.

Yes I am in the process of a complete gut and redo. A must for me is moving the window where the new sink will be. I just think it looks right but that my opinion.

I was going to say yes but then I realized that my mother's sink is NOT against the window, the window is to your back when you are facing the sink AND it was probably done that way b/c it shares a wall with the bathroom. . .so I think its fine!

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
NO - in fact i prefer it isnt.....i dont like to have plumbing on an outside wall
When i redid my kitchen i put glass doors on the cabinet above the sink - giving it a window-like effect.

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
I think before/without a dishwasher, you would want it, since you'll probably be at the sink a lot washing the dishes, and I know I'd rather look out a window than at a cabinet if I'm washing dishes for 30 minutes...
However, if you don't plan on doing a lot of dish washing, then you don't have to. Our current kitchen sink isn't under a window.

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
i have a bay window, and even though i have absolutly NO counterspace, when i do re-do my kitchen i plan on leaving the window the way it is.
So, i guess my answer would be, no you do not have to have your sink under your window

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
a lot of people move their sink to the corner to free up counter space since the corner is really "dead" space.
However, I am not a huge fan because it's usually pushed back slightly- and it bothers my lower back to do the dishes (my mom has this).

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
I personally prefer the window to be undersink expecially if that sink faces the back yard. Its great for when DS will be big enough to be outside on his own, but I can still keep an eye on him. I have a diswasher but I am constantly at the sink while I cook.

That's how my parents house is. The window is opposite the sink & the table is under the window, which I like, if it is an EIK.
My sink is in front of the windw, but it is usually dark when I wash dishes, so it doesn't really mahelp me. I'd almost prefer having a cabinet there, so I could put an under-cabinet light.
As it is, when I stand in front of the sink I block the light from the over head & it's hard to see if my dishes are clean.

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
Ours is and I like it.
My parents is not and it never bothered me when I lived at home.
My ILs didn't have it under the window but when they redid their kitchen they moved it to the other side and under the window.
Would it be a deal breaker for me? No.

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
needs to be? no. But I prefer to be able to look out the window while standing there washing. My last house had one and I enjoyed looking out at the yard.. current house does not have one, and I miss it.

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
This is our second house and in neither did we have our sink under a window. but honestly it wasnt an option in either kitchen. All the windows were part of hte EIK area not the cabinet area.
Either way I dont think it would look weird at all

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
So I went to re-design the kitchen again tonite and I like it with the sink in the corner. It doesn't look as weird as I thought it would.
If I kept my blinds open I probably would have kept the sink in that spot but once noon comes I get full sun in the back of my house so I end up closing the blinds when I wash dishes.

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
We have basically an L shaped kitchen counter, and the sink is in the corner of the L I don't really like it there because there is wasted space behind it. Plus it is impossible to get one of the drying racks that drain into you sink because of all the awkward Angles. so try to avoid that area if you can.

We just did this too--under the window is the only long stretch of usable counter space we have and it is great! The sink is in the corner, which is still right near the window, but not centered under the window like it was.

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
No a sink doesn't need to be under a window. You do what you are comfortable with. Ours is under the window and I love it, but that is just me. The sun also does not shine right into that window, so we don't have a problem with it. I do dislike corner sinks, I just don't like feeling stuck in a corner, but that is just me. If you can put it on one side of the "U" part and face out to somewhere else, I think that is really nice. GL on your decision.

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
It does not have to be but when we redo our kitchen I already know I will move the sink from the corner to be under the window. Sometimes I feel like in a "cave" when I wash dishes in my corner sink.

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
We are putting our sink in our island, it will be facing out to our kitchen table and then beyond that will be a bay window, so no I don't think it needs to be under a window. However, if I were to put the sink on an outside wall I would put it under a window.

Re: Do you think a kitchen sink needs to be under a window?
When we moved in, the sink was under the window. I liked it that way...looking outside, etc. When we redid the kitchen, we had it drawn both ways...under the window and in the corner. With it in the corner (we have an L shape), it gives A LOT more continuous counterspace. I wasn't 100% sold but DH and the contractor told me it would be better. So we did it and I LOVE IT! I could not imagine having it the other way. I LOVE having so much counterspace!

I am not 100% sold either but it really makes sense.
I am going to see if I can have the layout emailed to me, not sure if Lowe's does that. So I can do a progression thread.
Do you happen to have a picture that you can post or FM me?
