DO you think a nearly four yr old needs bed rails?

My DD got her big bed today and we are debating rails...she will be four in at the end of August. She moves around quite a bit.

Re: DO you think a nearly four yr old needs bed rails?

In your case, I probably would get them since she moves a lot. Especially if the bed is relatively high.

DD is 4 and has them (has had them on the bed since she got a big girl bed before she turned 3). However, she barely moves around in her bed. We were away recently for a week, she had a large bed to herself, and I didn't bring the rails...she was perfectly fine. I could pack ours away but figure it doesn't hurt to just keep them on her bed for a while longer.

Thanks for the input...That's what I was thinking, but then I know my son was done with rails b 4.5 and it seems like a waste of money. I wonder if she wil learn to stay on the bed...she seems ok now, but it will be a long night if she falls out. My sons rails were borrowed so we do not have them anymore or I would definitely use them for a bit.

I think it depends on the kid. My dd didn't need them at 4.

My ds is 5 and still sleeps pressed up against it all night, just like he did in his crib. His bed is high so I'm not comfortable taking them off yet.

My DS was 3 when he got his big boy bed. We put him in a regular twin bed. One side was against the wall and on the other side, he had so many stuffed animals stuffed into bed with him that there was no way he was going to fall off! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Needless to say we never got him bed rails! The stuffed animals keep him safe! Chat Icon

Re: DO you think a nearly four yr old needs bed rails?

In my case YES! DS will be 4 in Dec and has been in his bed since last August. He moves all over the place. After I feed DS#2 in the middle of the night, I go check on my older son and sometimes I find him with his head at the foot of the bed and his feet on his pillow, or his head against the wall and his feet on the bedrail. At least 1x a night I hear a crash as he rolls into the wall.
My kids are movers, even my 3month old manages to move around his crib some...so I cant even imagine taking away my older son's bed rails any time soon!

I say no - waste of money. My daughter was in a full size bed at 1.5
We had one and felt no need to go through th toddler bed stage or anything. I just didnt out the frame up yet. So its box spring and mattress. She sleeps SO good in it. In the past 8 months or so she has maybe fallen out of bed 2 times and it was nothing. In the beginning I put a couple pillows under the mattress on the edge and its in the corner against a wall too so I really only have to worry about the one side.

Good luck!

Yup! This is my almost 4 yr old DS! If I took off the rails - he'd be on the floor every night! Chat Icon

Re: DO you think a nearly four yr old needs bed rails?

Maybe don't put the frame up yet? And just put the boxspring and mattress on the floor? So its not far to fall for a few months to see how it goes?

I hate the way it looks but maybe its safer....

Good Luck!

Re: DO you think a nearly four yr old needs bed rails?

DS went into his big boy bed a couple months before his 3rd birthday. We never used the rails, but his bed is up against the wall and he always slept on the side closest to the wall so we never had a problem.

My son at four years old is still all over his bed so we have rails on both sides.

Re: DO you think a nearly four yr old needs bed rails?

My son is almost 3 a was a big mover - but was in a toddler bed from 18 months or so. He did not need bed rails but I did put pillows on the floor in case he fell. He has only fallen once but that was because he was trying to get to the potty in the middle of the night LOL!

Re: DO you think a nearly four yr old needs bed rails?

If you are going to use the frame I would say yes to the bed rails. DS will be 4 in Sept. and he occassionally falls out of his toddler bed because he moves around alot and everytime it happens I say to myself that I'm glad he is only like 4" off the ground.

Re: DO you think a nearly four yr old needs bed rails?

My oldest son went into a bed a little before 3 years old and by 4 we took down the rails.

Age aside, I liked that the rails were up because I worried about him falling out of bed. He moves around a lot so I felt like it would help maintain that sense of space for him that he had in the crib.

Since we've taken them down he's been fine too. Maybe they weren't needed - I can't say but I was happy we had them up.

This was pretty much the case with us as well. He will be 5 this Sept and I still have the rails up. He's a mover and while I'm not *that* worried he end up on the floor, there's definitely nights he is still completely turned around. I figure, better safe than sorry.
