I am unsure about this topic
Not because i don't think that two consenting gay adults should be allowed to get married
But i am fearful that this will open the door to other requests that i do not feel is appropriate...
IF you don't mind me asking - what type of other requests?
Multiple partner marriages
I dont think that would ever go down because of gay marriages. I could see if one was worried about legalizing marrying a dolphin though! Speaking of which...how the heck did that happen?

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
So here's my problem with defining the word marriage by using the Bible and God:
I can only assume that the definition you are using for marriage is based on the teachings of the Bible. That it is an holy rite, where you are delcaring your intentions in front of God, and that it is a joining of a man and woman. I know I'm simplifing this but the point I'm trying to get to is this:
So if a male and female with a faith being of agnostic, atheist, vampire, jedi, or what ever that does not believe that God needs to be present at their wedding; then is this not a marriage as well? Are people that get married by the court or justice of the peace not really truly married? After all God was not present at these "unions".

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
I feel that some things need to be kept the way they have always been. Marriage scared union that is recognized the world over. How can we change something that is part of the basis of society? Just like Jen said, then people will want maybe multiple-parterns to be rcocgnized as marriages.

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
I am 100% for same sex couples to get married.
I don't believe churches, temples, etc should be forced to marry same sex couples since it is against their religions tenements. Everyone should have equal rights under the law - without the burden of having to hire lawyers to protect assets, determine health decisions, etc.
The Defense of Marriage Act is an absurd law that allows individual states to determine a same sex marriage's validity. I feel this is on par with the archaic state laws that prevented mixed races to intermarry.
According to the Qur'an, Muslims can have up to four wives.

I was married by a judge too, I am still married. The term married IMO should be used for men & womwn only.

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
I think when referring to the term "marriage" in regards to same sex partnerships, it being referred to in the legal sense; not the religious sense.
I do believe that all people should be able to make a legal commit to another person that is binding in the eyes of the law. Married couples enjoy much more liberties in the law today that I believe all couples that are willing to take the legally binding steps of marriage should be entitled to regardless or gender.
Why shouldn't gay couples be given the same social security privileges, the same estate privileges, legal rights as man & woman marriage?
ETA: I do not equate the arguement of same sex marriage between two people and the arguement of Poligamy as one in the same.

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
Let's call it a "union" then and not a marriage. I'm sorry guys, I don't want to seem maybe archaic but there are certain things I firmly believe should not be changed.

Well whatever it should be called, they should still have the same rights as an other "couple".... our friends that have the twins had to go through the "adoption" process just so that they both have the same rights with their children, that doesn't seem fair!

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
I guess I don't see what is wrong with allowing 2 people ( I guess I will stress both these things: the number being "2", so as not to allow bigamy, and "people" being of the genus homo, species sapiens.) who love each other to get married. I'm not for multiple wives, husbands what ever, or you getting married to your dog. I just think that if "2 people" find each other and they make each other happy and feel that they have found their true purpose in this life when they look into each other's eyes then they should be allowed to marry. As has been said before by several people before, they've known several same sex couples that have had stronger relationships than heterosexual couples. I think I have a bigger problem with divorce rates, getting married upwords of 3 or 4 times, or married to stay in the country. To me, these are a bigger stain on the word marriage than the marriage of same sex couples.

I totally agree w/ that. They should be allowed the same rights for Insurance purposes, proxies and so on.

I am 100% in favor of gay marriage. I think gay couples should have the same righst with insurance, inheritance, life support decisions, etc... as straight couples.
I have no problem with the word marriage. I don't look at "marriage" as a religious word.
And frankly- with the current divorce rate and the amount of adultery going on in this day and age, straight people have done enough to damage the "sanctity of marriage" as a concept.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't even believe the government thinks it can legislate love. I think that should have the same rights as straight couples as far as taxes, insurance, etc.

I agree so much with the above.
I am a practicing catholic, but this is the one area i do not agree with the church. However, i respect there feelings on it and find it to be okay if they don't want to marry same sex couples before god.
HOwever, i do not consider the term marriage to be a religious term. It means more to me a union between two people.
How would we feel if this country only allowed you to marry one person in your lifetime and if you divorced you could not marry again. It would be totally unfair, just as it is totally unfair to not allow two people in love to get married because they are the same sex.

I agree with this completely. Marriage as it is today, based on love and committment, is NOT what it has always been...marriages were based on dowries (sp?) and property and ownership...the woman's father gave her to her husband and the husband essentially OWNED his wife and all of her property. There is nothing at all romantic or spiritual about that IMO, which is why I have no problem with the word marriage applying to a gay union.
So many of my very religious, very Catholic friends are getting divorced this year (and it's only February!!), it's just chipping away at any idea I ever held of the "sanctity" of marriage.

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
For me, it all comes down to love. Love is precious and hard to find. If you find true love and want to be together forever to love, honor, and cherish, bless you!
People always talk about marriages being less successful today (50% end in divorce) and having less "meaning" (which I do not nec. agree with but that is a whole other post) but it is straight people who do that, not gay.

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
To me it is a separation of church and state issue. I do not confuse the sacrament of marriage in my church with a state sanctioned marriage. They are different and I think if 2 people want to get married legally and have all the responsibilities and priveleges that go along with that, they should be allowed to.

prehaps i shouldn't be married...my life has nothing to do with any religion or belieafs.. god was not mention once at our wedding.
I question the word union because when it comes down to it, a marriage is a union...just a different word
