Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
Thats not what Im saying at all...
What Im saying is this countrys constitution was built on religion.... if the religion states that marriage is for men and women only.... than whats wrong with them not allowing same sex marriages???

I was married by a judge too, I am still married. The term married IMO should be used for men & womwn only.
So wait im confused... Is your marriage recognized in the catholic church?

I am not against homosexuality at all.... but agree very much with Sonia and Don, like Don said... maybe religion clouds my eyes... but I feel this country was built "UNDER GOD" and from a religious stand point....marriage is for a MAN and a woman...
so what about people who don't believe in G-d, men and women- can they get married?
prehaps i shouldn't be married...my life has nothing to do with any religion or belieafs.. god was not mention once at our wedding.
I question the word union because when it comes down to it, a marriage is a union...just a different word
The same goes for me.

Actually- this country is based on a separation of church and state. If "the" relgion dictates what can and cannot be done, then where does everyone who is not Christian go?

I thought this country was built around freedom? While I do recognize that religious beliefs had a lot to do with the founding of our country, I still think that the real reason for the establishment of 13 colonies as the United States of America was freedom. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

The constituition was not founded on religion - it was founded on principles of freedom one being the freedom of religion.

To me it is a separation of church and state issue. I do not confuse the sacrament of marriage in my church with a state sanctioned marriage. [/QUOTe]
I agree.... a marriage from a biblical stand point is the union of a man and a woman....in the eyes of God...
Someone who does not believe in God, or dosent believe Gods presence at their "wedding"....then from a religious stand point they are not married....
However in the state they will be....

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?
They should be allowed to be married. Heterosexuals have done more to ruin the sancitity of marriage at this point; allowing homosexuals to marry and calling it marriage won't bring it down further- if anything, maybe they'll raise it up. Maybe their relationships will have more staying power.
I've always contended that people who do not agree with gay marriage (or the term marriage for gay people) really are more worried about what it means to THEIR marriage. By extending marriage to gay people, it must mean maybe that their marriage is somehow less.
Why should there be a social order? Aren't we more evolved than that as a society? It's sort of ridiculous to say, our love is between man and woman so it is better. Who's to say. I mean, people throw "God's law" around- but who here is God? Who here is apt to judge fellow man? I think that's a sin too, no?

I am unsure about this topic
Not because i don't think that two consenting gay adults should be allowed to get married
But i am fearful that this will open the door to other requests that i do not feel is appropriate...
IF you don't mind me asking - what type of other requests?
Multiple partner marriages
I dont think that would ever go down because of gay marriages. I could see if one was worried about legalizing marrying a dolphin though! Speaking of which...how the heck did that happen?
Why not? It could be done on the same basis as Gay marriages... It is with consenting adults....
I would think if multiple partners wanted to get married, it is a seperate issue. Just because homosexual couples want to get married does not necessarily promote a new issue. If we were going to say from this...this happened ...and then that happened we could be here all day. When the time comes and multiple partners want to get married, that will be judged solely on that matter.

As a Catholic churchgoer, I am 100% for the marriage of 2 adults. I find it so disturbing that gov't wants to dicate what 2 consenting adults want. I would think Vegas drive thru marriages should be more talked about then gay marriages.

I don't think gays are asking that their marriage be recognized by the Church- just by the state. So what's the problem.
Also, I am Jewish and I had a religious wedding in a temple. The Church does not recognize my wedding, but my religion does. That's what matters to me.
ETA: And what about the millions of Hindus or Muslims or Buddhists, etc... who are married in this country every day. The Church doesn't recognize their marriages- but it is fine because the state does.

That doesn't mean that the constitution was written around religion. Look at the bill of rights.

There was a time in this country when "God" was it for nearly everyone. Times have changed. While I am no scholar, the Constitution is a living document that has to remain current. This country is very different now. Lots of people worship non-Christian gods or don't believe at all.

But over time, you need to take a look at the laws and maybe they need to be "ammended". Have we forgotten that in the 230 years since 1776, that women have only been allowed to vote in the last 87? So the fact that there are laws, does not mean that the laws cannnot be revisited and maybe changed.
