Re: Does anybody hate the city?
I hated working there, but love going in and enjoying what the city has to offer.
Restaurants, sites, parks, window shopping, etc.
ETA: My DH loves it too! We spent our first date there.

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
Born here and raised here. I am also fiercely protective of when those complain how horrible and dreadful it is. With that said, I have definitely had my moments when I wanted to jet off to nomansland. It is very very overwhelming sometimes to be here (noise, congestion, pollution not to mention the terror factor ) It is, however, such a great place to get to know and take advantage of. There is really no place just like it. We will probably eventually wind up in the burbs' but I love that I got the chance to grow up here!!!

I love the city!! I live and work here too.
Its amazing that I can just "pop" into the Met or the museum of natural history for an hour or two with my daughter if I want to leave work early. And eat any ethnicity of food I want. And take a train downtown and walk around the village to see such beautiful buildings.
I also love the diversity of the city. My daughter is growing up living on the same hall as a gay couple, a single mom with two teenagers and a professional single woman. Not to mention all the people in our buiding that we meet in the elevator- the tibetan monk-in-training, people of all ethnicities and nationalities. When I grew up, all I knew were white and Asian kids in the traditional family.
And playing in the park- my daughter runs up to kids and I talk to their parents. Its amzaing. People from all different countries, in all different professionas: Scientists, doctors, HR, event planners, teachers, curators, and careers I never even heard of.
I feel truly blessed to be living in such an amazing city.
You said it perfectly. Although I eventually want a house,I love love all the wonderful aspects of the city. I am going to miss it when we do move. I totally agree with you Shelly on what a wonderful place it is for children. Many people do not realize that.

thank you!!!
its so rude imo when someone makes a post like this.
i wouldnt dream of making a "anyone hate LI?" post. obviously, this site has "LI" in the title, but i find it to be more of a New York board.
there are so many ppl on this site that live in the city.
i'm sorry, i'm not trying to be on a high horse, i just find it insulting is all.

And people bad mouth LI all the time on this site on the Home Board. Take a look. And I do not get offended at all. To each is own.

I have worked in midtown Manhattan for 8 years. If I never stepped foot in the city for the rest of my life again, I would not shed a tear.
I could have written this.
I think it's because between the commute in, being in an office for 8 or 9 hours, then trying to get home at a reasonable hour, it's difficult to take full advantage of all that the city has to offer.
That said, there are some really nice little neighborhoods that I do enjoy. I just find it hard psyching myself up to come here on my days off.
Oh and to those offended, people put the "'burbs" down ALL the time. Equal time people, equal time.

I'm sorry but this is a little silly. You know how many people spoke of NEVER buying a Ford? I own a Ford but I try not to take offense because it's just opinions.

i don't think i was mean at all. just stating my opinion, that i feel it is insulting & rude to make posts like this. i would say the same if someone made a "anybody hate long island?" thread. to me, bashing where someone chooses to create a home for themselves is just asking for drama. what good come come of a post like that. i have never seen any LI hating threads on here, i can see if somone was to make a thread about certain things they dont love about it, but not sucha broad statement as you hate it. you dont think its rude at all because you dont live here.

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
To be honest I wasn't even looking at it as a place to live. I was looking at it more as a place to visit. That I would never go there on my day off. That is it.
And yes there are always posts about leaving here because xyz.
And there was no drama until your posts.

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
As my sister and I were sitting at the kitchen bar watching our gnocchis being cooked while listening to Cypress Hill amongst the crowd at Frank's on 6th and 2nd, she expressed my thoughts perfectly: Look how beautiful this is! If you can appreciate the beauty of NYC, then there is no other place like it! I haved lived here for the past 5 years and was so happy to make it my permanent home when DH and I bought a co-op in April!! I feel like I can explore something new every day. Of course I like to escape to my parents house on LI now and again, but I just love coming home!!

this is how i feel about the city: it's a nice place to go for a little while-- to see a show, go to a museum, have a meal and then go home.

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
I hate the city at this point. It's just so dirty and crowded. Perhaps if the people that lived and worked here took more pride in it, it wouldnt be so bad.
The only thing that I actually like about the city is it's diversity.

i feel really sorry for anyone who hates the city.
NYC is so rich in culture. its got the best food, art, etc.
people in other countries dream of coming here one day, so i think its pretty sad when a NYer hates its own city.
if you hate the city you probably hate it due to commuting. commuting sucks no matter where you are. maybe not, i dont know.
no need to feel sorry for anyone. different strokes...

I agree...and while I love visiting NY I can 100% understand the mentality of those that don't love the city.
Many people love rural areas and the thought of being in a crowded city is the last thing they'd want to do (my dad is like this even though he reluctantly works there..).
Its not "sad" at all that a NY'er would hate NYC. Not everyone is a "city" person!! To each their own, no?

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went to a go-see for Alex today & I was lucky to be in NoHo, so we spent the day walking around, window shopping, having lunch with Daddy, spotting a couple of not- so-big celebs, I think it's an amazing place & wish I lived there when I was younger (pre-kid)!! Looking forward to spending Saturday night there with the hubby too!!!!!!!!
